FEATURED EVENT: Brookwood Groundbreaking
Students, families, staff, and community members enjoyed the spring sunshine as they celebrated the official launch of the project to build a new replacement school for Brookwood Elementary. One of the common themes for the speakers - Principal Michelle Jensen, Board member Erika Lopez, teacher Barb Nasewytewa, and student Carly Hernandez - was looking forward to a modern learning environment in a bright 73,700 square-foot, two-story building and new play fields. Carly is also looking forward to being in the first class of sixth-graders when the school opens for the 2020-21 school year. Another theme was gratitude to all who made this possible, from the district leaders and project staff who were involved in the early planning and design, to the community and voters who approved this investment in education. Construction is currently under way and will continue through August 2020. Stay informed about the progress on Brookwood's bond page.

Budget Committee Meeting and Budget Update
The District's 2019-20 Proposed Budget will be presented to the Budget Committee at their meeting on Thursday, May 9, at 5:30 p.m. in the Administration Center Board Room, 3083 NE 49th Place. Even though the Legislature has not yet finalized the K-12 budget for 2019-21, HSD has built its budget assuming Gov. Brown's proposed statewide allocation of $8.972 billion. At this level, HSD will be making reductions of $9.6 million in the 2019-20 school year (details here: video, slide presentation  ). House Bill 3427 would create a separate $2 billion Fund for Student Success, $1 billion of which would be distributed to K-12 schools through a Student Investment Account. That bill has passed the House with a supermajority and is currently in the Senate awaiting a final vote.

The presentation involves the landing of Life Flight, and presence of fire trucks and ambulances at the school. Residents of the area should note that this is just a drill and that there is no actual emergency.
