This is Severe Weather Awareness week, and today students across the district will practice tornado drills - you'll probably hear the sirens a few times today. As you probably know, the spring sport season has been delayed. Rescheduling is taking place, so check the activities calendar before you make plans. Once things get underway, there will be plenty of action across the fields, courts, turf, and track. Signs of spring continue to show up - including the sale of prom tickets, ordering of graduation announcements, and searches for summer employment. We're still hopeful that spring is out there somewhere...

April is National Financial Literacy Month

7th graders visited Finance Park last week.

Financial Literacy is one of those life skills that has become more complex in the last few years. Even the students who visit JA BizTown have gone from check writing to using a debit card.

Our our financial literacy curriculum with Junior Achievement starts in 3rd grade with "our City" and then in 4th grade with "our Region."  These are taught at TF and LS with community volunteers.  In 5th grade the curriculum continues with students visiting BizTown to put their learning into practice. In 7th grade, students visit Finance Park where the curriculum is centered around building a budget based on your personal profile. You may have a family or not, education debt or not, have to worry about daycare, health insurance, car insurance, and whether or not you can afford to eat out.

In middle school, students cover some of the curriculum in their math, social studies, and computer skills classes. Middle schoolers can also participate in the Stock Market Game and Career and College Club. By high school, students have many opportunities to increase their financial literacy, including Personal Finance, Independent Living, and Economics.  Options also include Brown Bag Lunches where speakers come in to talk to kids about things like credit and savings.

Spring Signing Day: April 11, 2018
Eight CLHS seniors made plans to play a variety of sports as they move on to college.

Pictured from left to right: Peter Vitalis is heading to Macalester College to play football; Tyler Johnsen is going to North Central University to play soccer; Matthew Mohr is off to St. John's University to play football; Adam Hanson will attend Gustavus Adophus College and play both football and baseball; Laura Campbell has chosen St. Norbert College for swimming; Kathryn Crum will attend St. Catherine University for swimming; Preston Willman is attending Barton College for Lacrosse, and Henry Trost will be attending St. John's University to play football.

As with many occasions involving CLHS staff and parents, there were lots of pictures marking the event. We wish our Wildcat athletes all the best!
