April 15, 2018

Rev. Claire Matheny, preaching
Luke 24:13-35

13 Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, 14and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, 16but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. 17And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. 18Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?" 19He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. 21But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. 22Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, 23and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. 24Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him." 25Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! 26Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?" 27Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures.
28 As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. 29 But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. 30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. 32 They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?" 33 That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. 34 They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!" 35 Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread.
Questions to Ponder
In verse 16, we find that two travelers were kept from recognizing Jesus. Because they do not know who Jesus is right away, he has the opportunity to reveal himself through Scripture and eventually through the breaking of bread.

Sometimes God makes an appeal to our hearts before we are able to know the full extent of what is in front of us. By engaging with Scripture, and by making time to be in fellowship with others, we open ourselves to the Risen Christ. We can be told about the glory of the Easter story, but the mystery of resurrection invites Christ to tarry with us on the road, especially when we are grieving.

Ponder these questions:

Do you have a glimpse of what Jesus is revealing this week for you?

How might you tarry in Christ's presence?

Has your "heart burned within you" at some point on our journey of faith? What are other physical indicators that help you to experience the Spirit's holy presence in and around you?

Who is relying on you to share your experience of the living Christ?

Dear friends:

I'm living as high as dreams can rise.

My ideal vacation has always been to ascend high above the worries of the world and to soak in the quiet of God's creation from some lofty perch. Now, I've finally come close to it.

Earlier this week we arrived at our home for the next several days. We are now high up on a mountain in the Smokies of East Tennessee. To get here we had to carefully follow the directions provided by the agent from whom we rented this house because GPS is inaccurate in this remote location. For a sense of how high up we are, water towers are often located on the highest ground to ensure good water pressure in the town below; we passed the water tower for this community on the way up.

The road to get here is steep , and I am convinced it follows the path of some old goat trail.  But, like the ancients who ascended to the heights to get closer to God, the proximity to our Lord from the solitude of this height is worth the climb.

We're not exactly alone up here, though. Each day I've seen a FedEx van chugging up the steep grade and past the house. There must be someone a little higher up who gets provisions regularly delivered.

There is more to yet climb, I suppose, and more to yet dream.

The sun comes up and I greet it with awe and wonder as the fog of the valley below appears in the day's gathering light. From far away, and high above, I include you all in those prayers of gratitude.

Peace,

A.B. Snell

Participants enjoy a light lunch together while watching and discussing a short faith-provoking film clip.  This week's selection is Amzie's Story - A powerful message of faith from Amzie Smith, the Louisville teenager who inspired thousands during her battle with terminal cancer.  Upcoming FaithFlix opportunities include :
  • April 22Lose It to Find It - Parker Palmer on doing the work before the work.
  • April 29:  Shame and Vulnerability - Author Brené Brown on our inability to create space to hold pain in community.
No prep, no stress, no registration - just come as you are able! For more information, or if you would like to request childcare, please contact Meg Baker at [email protected], 301-933-7933 ext. 104.
Nicaragua Interest Meeting

St. Paul's will be sending another Volunteers In Mission team to Nicaragua in early August to continue working with the community preschools in Ciudad Sandino. All levels of interest are invited to attend an informational meeting this Sunday,  April 15  starting at 11:45 a.m. in the Library at St. Paul's. Maybe God has been tugging at your heart for a few years to participate in a mission trip. Maybe you have no idea what a mission trip is and would just like to learn more. Scholarships will be available for anyone interested in the trip, and Justice and Compassion is funding specifically youth-targeted scholarships. If you'd like more information but can't make it to the meeting, please contact Athena Gaalswyk, [email protected]
UMW Book Club

The UMW Book Club meets about every other month, providing women the opportunity to read and discuss books with friends. We will meet this Sunday, April 15, at 12:00 noon, in Room 109 to discuss What is the What? by David Eggers. This novel was inspired by the life of Valentino Achak Deng who, like thousands of other so-called Lost Boys, was forced to leave his village in Sudan and trek hundreds of miles across the desert, pursued by militias, government bombers, and wild animals before resettling in the United States. What is the What? is moving, suspenseful, and unexpectedly funny.
Taste & Sing

Join us on Tuesday, April 17 starting at 12:00 noon in the Octagon room for a hymn-sing, fellowship, and lunch. Those attending are invited to suggest a favorite hymn to start the gathering, then Rev. Claire Matheny and Meg Baker lead as we sing together and learn a little more about the people behind some of our best-loved songs. This month will feature the music of Robert Lowry, a Baptist minister and gospel hymn writer whose stirring tunes include "Up from the Grave He Arose" and "Shall We Gather at the River," and other hymns that have been beloved for generations. There will be a tasty lunch to follow provided by Ginny Hagberg. There is no registration and no cost, and no singing expertise required!
Meet the Missionaries

The Justice & Compassion Team invites you to a pot-luck dinner in Heavener Hall on Wednesday, April 18 starting at 7:00 p.m. to meet Nan McCurdy & Miguel Mairena, long-time missionaries with the UMC's Global Board of Missionaries. St. Paul's has been supporting Nan and Miguel in their work for many years, and they will be telling us about their new assignment with "Give Ye Them to Eat" in Puebla, Mexico. If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Phil Rush ( [email protected]; 240-426-9907). You can also read more at  http://stpaulsk.org/service/justice-and-compassion
Biblical Archaeology: Ancient Entertainment

St. Paul's is a sponsor of the Biblical Archaeological Forum, a series of scholarly lectures. This month's lecture "Ancient Venues for Sport and Spectacles" will be presented by Dr. Lindley Vann on Wednesday, April 18, starting at 8:00 p.m. at Bender JCC (6125 Montrose Road, Rockville MD). The Roman period was a time of unparalleled military power and territorial expansion that led to centuries of peace known as Pax Romana. Some of the most obvious features in the archaeological record are the structures that were built as venues of public sport and entertainment: the Colosseum, the Circus Maximus, the theater of Pompey, the baths of Caracalla and Diocletian, and thousands of smaller versions situated from the borders of Scotland to Arabia. These structures witnessed gladiatorial combats, chariot races, traditional Greek theater, concerts, and Greek-style athletic events. This richly-illustrated lecture will investigate these activities and their architectural settings.  Reservations are not required. Fees per lecture are $10; high school students are admitted free of charge. For more information please visit: http://www.benderjccgw.org/event/ancient-sports-spectacles
Still Wednesday

Feeling called to stillness and community in a world that is all too loud? Still Wednesday is held in either the Sanctuary or Octagon at St. Paul's each week. Join us 7:00-8:00 p.m. for an hour of prayer and quiet: April 18, 25 and May 2, 9, 16, 23, 30. Still Wednesday facilitators lead the evening in a variety of formats that could include walking meditation, lectio divina, poetry, journaling, art, or music. Most evenings will include about 20 minutes of silent prayer. Simply come as you're able.
New Baby Meals

Share the love of St. Paul's from your kitchen! Jonathan & Ashley Derr welcomed a new baby girl, Francine Carson Derr, born April 11. Go to https://takethemameal.com/OUKU8639 to sign up and provide a meal for Jonathan, Ashley, big brother Sebastian, and big sister Louisa. Instructions about arranging drop-off and other details are included on the sign-up page.
Looking for Joy?

We have some! The Joyful Ringers! are seeking a few new people to share in our love of music. Whether you're experienced or just have a strong interest, we'd love to have you try ringing with us. We can teach the novice the basic fundamentals of music, and those with some experience can typically jump right in with a little guidance on bell techniques. If you're 16 or older and available for Wednesday night rehearsals, please contact Linda Ferrara at 703-786-1344 or [email protected].
Yard Sale

Another Yard Sale is coming up!  The Spring Indoor Yard Sale, sponsored and organized by the United Methodist Men, will be on Friday, April 27 (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.) and Saturday, April 28 (8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m.), with our "receiving day" on Thursday, April 26 (8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). This event is a big fund-raising opportunity and helps us support the church's ministry and outreach efforts. The items you donate provide a real benefit to others, especially recent immigrants and those with limited income. We happily accept such things as small appliances, furniture items, toys, books, clothes, knick-knacks, costume and fine jewelry, china, and other collectibles. (We cannot accept mattresses, sofas, car seats, or computer equipment.) Your volunteer work at the Yard Sale is a great contribution in itself! If you can volunteer, please use the sign-up sheet in the church office and simply add your name to the lot you prefer.
Pancake Breakfast

UMM Pancake Breakfast
All are welcome at our Community Pancake Breakfast on Saturday, May 5, 8:00-10:30 a.m. in Heavener Hall. We will feature regular pancakes, specialty pancakes, eggs, sausage, bacon, ham, fruit, and grits. Proceeds from this breakfast will benefit UMCOR. Instead of a fixed price, we invite donations. (As a guide, we suggest $8 for adults, $2 for children, or $20 for a family of four.)
Hunger Ministry Is Growing!

As the number of families we serve continues to grow, so does our need for additional volunteers. Communion Collect generally happens the first Sunday of the month (we shift the date by a week when a holiday falls on the weekend). Please note our next food collection and distribution will be May 6 & 7. Your donations are always appreciated! Volunteers are needed after both church services to sort food and bag items. On Monday evenings, we meet at about 6:45 p.m. to bag the remaining food and to be ready for the 7:30 p.m. distribution. We are in great need of volunteers to help make deliveries! If you're able to make a delivery or two, even occasionally, we'd be grateful. To volunteer, contact Dawn Ely ( [email protected]) and read more at:  http://stpaulsk.org/service/hunger-ministry
St. Paul's Educational Award

St. Paul's, through its Council on Youth Ministries, will once again provide a monetary Educational Award to one or more graduating High School Seniors with plans to attend college, university, or some other type of post-secondary education. Each applicant will be considered based on several criteria including academics, service to St. Paul's, financial need, and personal statement. The application deadline for the 2018 Educational Award is Friday, May 18. Go to http://stpaulsk.org/community/youth to download the form and accompanying letter. Award recipients will be notified in late May and will be announced in church on Youth Recognition Sunday, June 3. Questions? Contact Mrs. Meg Baker, Director of Christian Education, [email protected] or 301-933-7933 ext. 104.
A Way Forward at St. Paul's

All adults and youth are invited to a workshop on Saturday, May 19, 12:00-4:00 p.m. in Heavener Hall, where we'll have lunch together and talk, learn, and pray as we explore how our congregation might address the United Methodist Church's forthcoming decisions (not yet known) regarding policies on sexual orientation and homosexuality. We will briefly review what the United Methodist Church is doing, then in small groups we will explore questions that are close to home. We may look at what issues members of our church might agree or disagree about, how decisions are made at St. Paul's, and what St. Paul's individuals and groups hold as bedrock beliefs about God, the church, Biblical authority, and inclusivity. Although some individuals may want to express personal opinions about these questions, our emphasis will be on thinking and talking about the life of our congregation. An end goal for this session is a clear-eyed view of what beliefs unite all of us at St. Paul's, what might separate our members on matters of sexuality, and how we might consider the forthcoming results of the greater UMC's 2019 Special Session called to address sexuality and church policy. To participate, please sign up in the church office. For more information, please contact Bill Butz, [email protected], 240-205-0964.
9:00 Worship Participation

Communion
Would you like to read Scripture or help serve Communion at the 9:00 a.m. Worship Service? We are looking for Liturgists and Communion Stewards to assist in the first worship service on Sunday mornings. There are dates available now for April, May, and June 2018. To sign up online, simply add your name and email address to the sign-up sheet found at this site: goo.gl/Xz5T79.  Contact Rev. Claire Matheny ([email protected], 301-933-7933 ext. 103) if you have questions.
VBS is Back!

St. Paul's will hold our popular Vacation Bible School program this year, June 19-22. We welcome VBS Campers, age 3 through those entering grade 5, from throughout the community for Bible stories, crafts, games, fun, and snacks based on the theme "Once Upon a Mountaintop." Youth who've finished grade 5 or higher are welcome to apply for Staff Helper Volunteer positions. Go to http://stpaulsk.org/community/vbs for more details or to download Camper or Volunteer applications. All applications are due by May 31.
Associate Pastor Update

After over seven years of service at St. Paul's, Associate Pastor Rev. Claire Matheny has accepted a new call to serve as Enabling Minister at Kittamaqundi Church in Columbia MD. You can read more about her new position in the "Claire's Corner" feature on page 2 of the April Epistle, available here: http://stpaulsk.org/community/epistle-weekly-news. Rev. Claire will continue her whole-hearted service at St. Paul's until her last day on Sunday, June 17, 2018. Our district superintendent, the St. Paul's Staff-Parish Relations Committee, and Rev. Adam Snell have been in prayerful consideration regarding the appointment of the next associate pastor, and have announced that it will be Rev. Kate Mackereth, currently serving as Chaplain Resident at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. She will begin at St. Paul's on July 1, 2018.
Summer Sunday School

Can you spare an hour this summer? Summer Sunday School runs from May 27 through September 3 and we are looking for adults who can volunteer their time for one or more Sundays. At least two adult volunteers are needed each week. All materials - curriculum, suggested activities, and snacks - will be provided. Youth helpers are also welcome and encouraged to participate. Please consider serving our church community in this way! Sign up in the church office or online at http://stpaulsk.org/community/children.  Thank you!
Coffee Hour Volunteers

We are blessed to gather each Sunday following worship for good conversation and fellowship, and cookies and coffee! We are always in need of a few volunteers who can assist with serving coffee and a few cheerful bakers who can provide baked treats (nut-free, please) for fellowship time after 10:30 a.m. worship. Please sign up on the sign-up clipboards available during coffee hour or in the Octagon kitchen during the week.
Online Prayer Requests

Upcoming surgery? Have a joy or concern? In need of prayer support? Submit a prayer request online, day or night. You have the option to share your request with the Prayer Lift team or only share directly with the pastors.
