Several TJ students have been recognized as outstanding photographers in this year's district photography exhibit. Of the 65 accepted submissions, TJ topped the list with 14 students chosen in the juried show. The students have worked hard all year in Mr. Forrester's class to achieve at this level.
The gallery also chose Owen Kennedy's photo to promote the show on the gallery's poster!
The opening reception is May 10 and the show runs May 4-18. For more information, click here!

"Thank you everyone who handed out Snow Cone Coupons for students who attended office hours. We gave out approximately 140 snow cones. There were a few students who showed up at the very end of lunch asking for one but we just ran out of ice and the bell was about to ring! All in all there were close to 150 who had coupons. I most impressed that they held on to that small piece of paper for an extra day!"

Teacher Appreciation Week is This Week!
|
National Teacher Appreciation Week is a celebration of the teachers and staff who lend their passion and skills to educating our children. During the week, there will be a banner hanging outside of the main office for students and parents to show the staff some love by adding kind works and expressions of gratitude.
STUDENTS: Make sure to tell a teacher "Thank you!" for all they do to make TJ the special place that it is.
PARENTS: If you aren't in the building this week, please send an email to a teacher that has made a difference in your student's life at TJ.
The PTO and parents from each class will provide treats throughout the week as a small token of our appreciation for all their hard work. It's never too late to help! If you are interested in helping out next week or if you have questions, you can email Eileen Robinson at

TJ Talks Presents: The Personal Side to Suicide - May 6th

The end of the year has a lot of events and we need your help! Join us for the last meeting of the year as we approve classroom grant requests from staff and finish up plans for teacher appreciation and other community events for the last few weeks of school. We can't be the best community we can be without you!

from 6-7pm in Room 111.

Summer School Information
|
Counselors have been meeting with off track students and registering them for Summer School. If your student has failed courses and might be off track, please have them contact their counselor. The Summer School Program is available for students who have failed courses and is not available for original credit or to get ahead with credits. You can also email your student's counselor with questions or to verify that your student has been registered. Please see the information below for details.
Dates and times:
The Regional Summer School Program will begin June 18, 2019 and run through July 19, 2019. Classes will take place Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m. Classes will not be in session July 4th or July 5th. Breakfast will be served every morning from 7:30 a.m.-7:50 a.m., and lunch will be served from 12:00 p.m.- 12:30 p.m. If your students are interested in taking advantage of food services, please be sure to arrange transportation accordingly.
Regional Summer School Program Fees:
Each student who participates in the Regional Summer School Program, will have a $25 fee applied to their student account. If the student completes at least one course over the summer, the fee will be removed. If no courses are completed, the fee will remain attached to the student's account.
Courses and credits:
Each student can meet with their counselor to establish which courses need to be recovered. There is a 2-course maximum associated with this program. This means that each student has the opportunity to take up to 2 courses and earn up to ten credits through the Regional Summer School Program. All completed courses will be reflected in Infinite Campus and be applied to student's transcript. Students will only receive credit upon course completion. There will be no partial or half credit given for coursework that is not complete.

Looking for some last minute hours to fill your volunteer hours? OR Just want to do some good as a family for your Neighbors by helping them clean up their yards?
A Little Help, a non profit that helps our aging population stay connected in the community. Has their annual Service Saturdays coming up.
We have one on Saturday, May 11th and we meet at Christ the King in the School Parking Lot at 8 a.m. - Near Rose Medical Center.

Service Saturday! provides an excellent opportunity for A Little Help members to receive assistance with various home maintenance jobs, such as weeding yards and garden beds, helping plant flowers, washing windows, sweeping garages, trimming some bushes, and just overall yard work.

King Soopers just made FUNDRAISING for TJ even EASIER!
All you need to do is register your King Soopers loyalty card number or alternate ID (e.g. phone number) to earn money for TJ. After you register for the program, a percentage of ALL of your King Soopers purchases will go to TJ.
Important: At the point of purchase, you must swipe your loyalty card or type in your alternate ID in order for your purchases to count toward TJ's fundraising.

Hosting an Exchange Student

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to host an exchange student? Now is your chance!
Two girls with EF High School Exchange are hoping to find host families in Denver for the 2019-2020 school year so they can make their dream to live in the United States come true. Mariel from Norway is half Thai, half Norwegian. She loves playing soccer, volleyball, running, snowboarding, painting, and drawing. Lara from Germany loves playing the guitar, dancing, cooking, and playing sports. Both girls are outgoing, open-minded and fun-loving. Mental Health and Social/Emotional Tips
|
We Have 10 Powerful Things to Say to Your Kid That Can be Conversation Game Changers!
In a world consumed busy with schedules of work, school, social activities, family and technology, we need to remember the importance of dialogue and face-to-face discussions with our kids and young adults. Helping them develop conversational skills, self-awareness and articulation skills are important aspects of development and success. Here are some things to say and ask that can help your conversations with your kid!
1)
"I love watching you play (or perform!)"-
Sports and performances are a big part of high school, and have a big impact on our students. Make sure your conversations about them are empowering and supportive. You can use this statement for any kind of performance in which your child is involved.
2)
"What happened at school today?" -
When we begin our conversations with our young adults, we can ask open-ended questions to help facilitate the discussion. We all know what happens you say ask, "how was school today?"... we usually get a one word answer. Try this new question instead! Or, here are some other options:

Tell me about your day

What did you learn today?
-
What did you struggle with today?
-
What fun did you have today?
-
What did you learn that would be useful for me to learn, too?
3)
"Tell me more." -
If you ask open-ended questions, listen fully, and refrain from adding your opinions unless they ask (we know this is hard!). You will learn a lot about their interests, experiences at school and their overall view of the world.
4)
"I love how hard you work."
- Success is correlated to effort, practice and perseverance. Though we may think this, it is not always correlated with being smart or talented. If your child is having a difficult time with school, remind them that they are resilient and can learn if their effort is strong. Some things to say (don't give them the answer; letting them figure it out on their own builds confidence and resiliency):

5)
"School is your job."
- Remind them that school is their job, put in the effort and do it well. This is a more powerful approach than thinking they will love every class, teacher or experience, and reminds them that life is not fair, and as soon as we stop thinking it should be, we have an advantage over the circumstance and can adjust and approach as needed.
6)
"I like you
." - Chances are your kid(s) know you love them, if you tell them that. It is also important to let them know you like them as a person and enjoy spending time with them. If they know you like them, they are more likely to have stronger confidence, and we know how important self-esteem is for the "success" puzzle.
7)
"What makes you a good student?"
- Let's help them increase their self-awareness! This is important for a few reasons; learning and being remarkable. If we do not reflect on our abilities, we miss out on learning from mistakes and being our best.
8)
"Be your best self
." - Early on, your child may not fully understands what this means, but as they get older, they will settle on what it means, specifically for them.
9)
"Notice who might need a friend today."
- Being on the outside is a lonely place. Not being included can lead to a sense of not belonging, which can be devastating. This is something we can all easily change. If we notice someone is missing out on a conversation or activity, simply inviting them to join makes all the difference. Most kids know how to be thoughtful to others; but as adolescence can be a tough time, they may just need some reminding.
10)
"Be kind to someone today."
- Kindness and compassion are something the world needs, all the time. Let's teach our kids these valuable characteristics and let them be role-models and leaders within their school.

As we look ahead to Senior year, we need several parent volunteers to take on the planning and execution of the Senior night camp out before the first day of school for incoming freshman (Aug.19). This is a great TJ Spartan tradition. We would especially love to have some dads help out with this event.

The class of 2022 needs 2-4 additional parents to join parent Julie Rubin in planning fundraising events. The class of 2022 has two faculty sponsors,
Jason Klimczak and Maggie Kennedy, but parents are needed to work with the staff to plan fundraising activities. Parent sponsors also plan community building activities for the parents of the class of 2022. Each class is expected to raise money needed to host their Prom, After Prom and other activities senior year. The sooner the fundraiser get started, the more choices there will be for events senior year. The time commitment can be as little or as much you can share.
Your involvement in any capacity is important and appreciated. We are successful because of your behind-the-scenes contributions, large and small. It all adds up to a stronger community. An engaged parent body shows our students that we care about them!
