We're Reading Together

GTCF is joining the biggest reading event in the state, Pierce County READS 2018 . This year, the book is the graphic novel "March" from Congressman John Lewis,  co-author Andrew Aydin, and illustrator Nate Powell. It is a first-hand account of John Lewis' lifelong struggle for civil and human rights.

We decided to read and discuss the novel as a staff after a month full of events and experiences that reinforced the importance of developing the tools and language to be intentional about achieving diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout Pierce County.

As a community foundation, GTCF is committed to providing resources to support individuals and organizations in working together to meet the community's needs and to achieve the community's greatest potential, now and into the future. Learning one another's stories, and supporting one another's success is what gives everyone a more robust, lively, and connected Pierce County.

Hundreds of students packed the gymnasium at First Creek Middle School on March 30 for the 7th Seeds of Peace Youth Summit. The one-day event is organized and run by student leaders from the First Creek Middle School Eagle Center, an after-school program which offers expanded learning opportunities.

With tents lining streets in downtown Tacoma and in neighborhoods across the county, it's easy to see the issue of homelessness in our community. However, homelessness affects even more people than those we see out on the streets. A panel of local leaders working to address homelessness shared data and stories at a recent event hosted by City Club of Tacoma.

Last month, GTCF staff joined more than 300 professionals from state agencies, education, and nonprofits to engage in frank and open dialogue about race and racial disparities present in work, school and everyday life.

"America's next generation of major donors, whether young Gen Xers or rising Millennials, will have an outsized impact on society and the planet we share...if current trends in wealth and giving continue, these rising major donors will be the most significant philanthropists ever." - Sharna Goldseker

Last month local organizations shared over 35 events on our  GTCF Community Calendar. We recognize that it takes a lot of work to put on events like these, so we thought it would be fun to highlight a few of them and share how they went and what the organizers learned along the way so we can all benefit from each other's experiences as we strive to put on  events that positively impact our community here in Pierce County.
