Building Our Learners Dynamically

Aspire...to direct one's hopes or ambitions toward achieving something.

As a special education teacher, a general education teacher who teaches students with disabilities, or even as a parent of a student with disabilities, have you ever sat back and thought "Does my student/child even know why they have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) ?" Do your children know what they are trying to accomplish with their IEP?

ASPIRE is a student-led IEP initiative that provides the student with the opportunity to develop self-determination skills. Self-determination skills are a combination of attitudes and abilities that lead students to set goals for themselves, take the initiative to reach these goals and make their own choices.

"All of this makes up the beauty of having the ASPIRE program in Barrow County says Russell Middle teacher Laura Otting, handing over more responsibility of IEP meetings and giving our students the ability to take charge and own their educational experience." Read more to find out what students and parents think about this program.
