First Sundays Returns with Bike to Market Day
|
|
The Baltimore Farmers’ Market & Bazaar celebrates
National Bike Month sponsored by League of American Bicyclists, with Bike to Market Day on
Sunday, May 5 from 7am-noon as part of our First Sundays-themed programming. Marketgoers are encouraged to pedal down to the market to meet local bike advocacy groups, enter free giveaways and support cyclists in Baltimore.
Participating organizations, businesses and individuals:
- Bikemore, the city’s leading bicycle advocacy group will operate a free valet parking on Pleasant Street for bicycles.
- BYKE Collective, a bicycle-centric youth enrichment program will have information available on their organization and a mobile bicycle repair on-hand for marketgoers.
- Bicycle component manufacturer Hold Fast will be present with their made in Baltimore bike parts.
- Baltimore-based artist Natan Lawson will have his bicycle-powered phone charging station.
- Miles Thomas and the Milezarelli Bike Club will also be present with cycling-themed fashion items.

Free Farmers’ Market Food
Scrap Collection
Every Sunday starting Sunday, May 5
The
Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts (BOPA) and the
Baltimore Office of Sustainability will begin collecting food through the duration of the market. The collection includes food and food scraps, plants, coffee and tea bags, yard waste and leaves, and paper products, and excludes meats, dairy and eggs, liquids, coated paper products, glass, metal, plastics and rubber. It is recommended that residents carry their food scraps products in a small bucket or compost bin. All items are weighted and examined for contamination. Visit their tent near the Hollywood Diner on Holliday Street.

Pick of the Month Recipe: Eggs Benedict with Asparagus by Sam Hanson, Baltimore Farmers’ Market & Bazaar Manager
Fresh local eggs and asparagus are abound at the market these days, so let’s put them together for a delicious breakfast or brunch dish. This recipe will serve two.
- 8 spears of asparagus with the tough bottoms snapped off
- ½ tsp olive oil
- 2 slices of bread or English muffins
- 2 fresh eggs
- 3 egg yolks
- 8 tbsp room temperature unsalted butter
- 1 tsp lemon juice
- ½ tsp salt
- cayenne pepper
Toast
- Put the bread or English muffin in the toaster and toast.
Asparagus
- Add oil to a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté the asparagus until it darkens in color and becomes tender for five minutes.
- Remove from heat. Season with salt and pepper and set aside.
Hollandaise
- Bring a few inches of water to a simmer in a medium-sized saucepan. Add yolks to a heatproof medium-sized bowl and whisk until they become pale.
- Place the yolk bowl over the simmering saucepan and whisk constantly until the yolks have thicken for 3 minutes.
- Add butter one tablespoon at a time whisking constantly making sure each tablespoon of butter is melted and incorporated before adding the next.
- Add the lemon juice and cayenne pepper to taste. The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon.
Poached Eggs
- In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil and then turn down to a simmer. Crack each egg into a small bowl or ramekin.
- Stir the simmering water and gently dip the eggs into the center of the vortex. Cook the eggs until the whites are set and the yolks are still soft for about three minutes.
- Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and set aside.
Final Assembly
- Butter the toast or English muffin and place the four spears of cooked asparagus on each piece. Place an egg carefully on each piece and top with a good dollop of hollandaise sauce.
- Season with salt and pepper.

After 20 years of turning corn kernels into scrumptious popcorn,
DelMarVa Popcorn
is known throughout the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia area for their perfect pop. If you have been to the market before then you have certainly seen folks walking around with large bags of kettle corn of varying lengths.
It is all made fresh on-site at the market so make sure you get your own from their stand located next to Zeke’s Coffee.

Farm Spotlight: Two Boots Farm
Now in their fourth year at the market,
Two Boots Farm
has established themselves as a premier cut-flower farm and growers of unique and beautiful veggies, fruit and mushrooms. New this year, Two Boots is officially certified as organic. Their farm is located in Hampstead, Maryland just south of the Pennsylvania line. There, they grow a vastly diverse array of flowers, herbs and select vegetables.
Two Boots is also the lone farm at the market with a pawpaw orchard, where they grow Maryland’s largest native fruit, similar to a banana or a custard apple. Visit their stand at the market located centrally next to Cajou Cream and the master gardener educational tent.

Bazaar Vendor Spotlight:

is a mesmerizing collection of jewelry, sculptures and meditation tools that are handcrafted with orgone healing technology. Orgonite is the combination of crystals, metals and resin (liquid fiberglass). Many believe orgonite devices to possess healing qualities. Historically, they have been used to convert negative energy into positive.
Christina Cook, founder of NEGUS CRE8, finds genuine crystals and locally sourced metals to add personalized intentions to each unique piece. “Becoming an Orgonite designer has been a life changing journey for me that is ongoing. I'm grateful to be revived as an artist and a creator, making art I believe in.”

Blue Water Baltimore Tree Giveaway: Sunday, June 2
Blue Water Baltimore
and
TreeBaltimore
will offer marketgoers from Baltimore City and Baltimore County free trees on Sunday, June 2 as part of our First Sundays programming.
The organizations are collaborating to provide a variety of species ranging from smaller flowering and fruiting trees to large canopy trees. Visit their station near the Baltimore Farmers’ Market & Bazaar Welcome Tent.

*Compliments of Mercy Medical Center, patrons can park for free in the Mary Catherine Bunting Garage, located at 330 Guilford Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21202, for two hours (maximum) from 7am to noon.
Vehicles should enter through the Pleasant Street entrance. Bring your ticket to the Welcome Tent for validation.
A Friendly Reminder About Pets at the Market
Pets are not allowed at the Baltimore Farmers' Market & Bazaar, and it is a Baltimore City Health Department ticketable offense of up to $1,000.00.
