ST. LOUISE SCHOOL PARENT BULLETIN

We're almost through Spirit Week in preparation for tomorrow's Walk-A-Thon, and what a spirited week this has been! The kids have had a lot of fun dressing up, duct-taping their principal to the wall, and creating grade-level posters and cheers for the big Walk! If you weren't able to make it to school Tuesday afternoon to see me taped to the wall - all for the love of our school by raising money! - check out our Facebook page. Thanks for the $1,757 you and your kids donated for the opportunity to duct-tape me. That money goes to help the Parents' Club reach the Walk-A-Thon revenue goal of $60,000.
Don't forget that since we need the entire parking lot tomorrow for the Walk, parents are asked to park off-site if here between 9:00 and 2:50. The only exception is for a parent who will be working all day on the Walk-A-Thon committee and can leave his/her car all day on the basketball court north of the gym (with no way to get out until after 2:50). In today's red Family Envelope, you're getting a map which shows some of the streets around here you can choose for parking (legally) when coming to school. Carpool drop-off and pick-up will work as usual tomorrow, so if you are simply driving in from 8:00-8:30 to drop-off or from 2:50-3:15 to pick-up, you may enter as usual.
The soccer field will be open for parking from 2:50 on for those parents who want to leave the car and walk up to the Tailgate Party that will take place in front of the school starting at 3:00. I want to thank our tri-chairs, Marinell Zevenbergen, Julianne Read, and Jen Sharp, for leading this important fund raiser, and to all you who will be helping them tomorrow! - The 5th grade sponsors two children from the NPH Orphanage (Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos) as part of their class service. To help raise a little extra money to send to these sponsored children as Christmas presents each year, the 5th grade classes will be selling ice cream sandwiches on this "Flavorful Friday Day" - Friday the 10th. The treats are $1 and will be sold to all classes during lunch. Thank you for considering sending a dollar with your child for ice cream to help the support the 5th grade's NPH pequeños!
Saturday, May 11
- Spring Spruce-Up, 8am-12pm; help beautify the parish/school landscape by weeding, pruning, and spreading bark; email Jeffrey Hummer if you can volunteer

Wow! Thanks for all your spirited participation so far this week! The Walk-A-Thon event is sure to be a fantastic success tomorrow! Also, thank you to all who taped Mr. Fitz to the wall on Tuesday! The donations of parents, students, staff, and alumni parents raised $1,757 to add to our total!
Spirit Week continues today with
Twin/Triplet/Dress-like-your-Buddies Day. Students are to try to wear the same clothing as one or more kids in their grade level (with no face paint or hair coloring please; other free dress rules apply).

Then tomorrow is the BIG DAY!
The Pre-K through Grade 3 students gather in the parking lot at 10:20 Friday, and parents are welcome to line the course to cheer them on and/or to help out until they finish at 11:30.
Next, the Grade 4-8 students gather at 12:20 for their time to walk. Their parents are welcome to cheer and/or help too, until they finish at 2:30.
We then need a big crew of parent volunteers to quickly tear down the course before carpool pick-up begins! Thanks for showing up at 2:30 to help us!
Remember, parents, that you must please park off-site tomorrow in the neighborhood streets if you are doing more than just regular 8:00-8:30 drop-off or 2:50-3:15 pick-up.
- The exception is if you are volunteering all day, you may park on the basketball court, but your vehicle is "stuck there" all day Friday with no in-or-out privileges from 8:50AM-2:50PM.
- If you are staying for the after-school Tailgate Party, the soccer field will be open for parking.
Students are to wear their
Walk-A-Thon t-shirt tomorrow along with grade-level colors for other articles of clothing and accessories as best as you are able:
PreK: Light Blue; Kindergarten: White & Purple; Grade 1: Red;
Grade 2: Green; Grade 3: Yellow; Grade 4: Purple;
Grade 5: Blue; Grade 6: Tie Dye; Grade 7: Orange; Grade 8: Black
It's considered a "fun dress day" tomorrow, so students may wear fun accessories such as hats. Please note that if yoga-style or jegging-style pants are worn, a top (or even a tutu) must be worn that covers the buttock. Make sure your child wears good socks and athletic shoes, and dresses for the weather - we all go outside for up to two hours of walking whether it's cold and raining (have a light jacket and/or hat) or hot and sunny (have a hat and/or sunscreen).
Please take advantage of the remaining eight days of collecting donations from friends, family, and neighbors. You can keep writing more on the yellow copy, or use your student's personal link from 99pledges.com to solicit these donations. All donations are due by Friday, May 10th.
Thank you to all who have contributed and collected pledges thus far! As of Tuesday, here are the pledge leaders:
- KA: 83% participation and $4,140 raised
- 6A: 65% participation and $3,328 raised
- 5B: 71% participation and $3,249 raised
- 6B: 62% participation and $3,030 raised
Individual leaders as of Tuesday are Matilda, Charlotte, Nathan, Reggie, and Ridley - all collecting over $500, with Matilda leading at $750! Remember, the overall top money-collector gets a $100 gift card (among other prizes), and all students who raise at least $250 get a free dress day, free pizza lunch, and a gift card. Tomorrow we need every student to wear athletic shoes for walking along with their Walk-A-Thon t-shirts and other clothing that contains the assigned grade level colors. It's considered a "fun dress day" tomorrow, so students may wear fun accessories such as hats. Above, our 6th graders have the fun "tie dye" color assigned to them, so they went to the art room and tie dyed their Walk-A-Thon t-shirts recently.

St. Louise Students Are Active Christians
Student Learning Expectations - SLEs - are expectations that our students should know, understand, value, and be able to do by the time they graduate from St. Louise School. These 12 SLEs comprise four categories important to the development of a well-rounded student: an active Christian; a life-long learner; a well-balanced individual; and a community member. Each month, one or two different SLEs are focused on school-wide until the 12 expectations are covered by the end of the school year.
For the month of April, we had one Student Learning Expectation focused on throughout the school:
- "A St. Louise student is an active Christian who seeks to develop a person relationship with God as demonstrated by living out Gospel values and participating in liturgies, sacraments, and daily prayer." (SLE #1.1)
Below are highlights from some of the classrooms on how they worked during April - and/or all yearlong - on achieving this SLE.
Of course, students in all grades here at St. Louise begin and end the day with prayer as well as pray at lunch. And at times throughout the day, students or teachers will break into spontaneous prayer to pray for doing well on a test, or to pray for the safety of and thanksgiving for first-responders who drive by the school with sirens blaring. Students are taught to memorize prayer and write their own prayers.
Our 8th graders have the opportunity to guide the entire student body in practice and as role models at all-school Masses, by taking on specific ministry roles. These range from some 8th graders helping as ushers, altar server captains, or sound-system set-up to serving as the Minister of the Word or an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharistic. Furthermore, 8th graders created new Stations of the Cross posters in Mrs. Walker's art classes, and on Good Friday, they guided the school in walking the Way of the Cross. The 8th graders modeled reverence, prayerfulness, and the solemnity of the day. Below you see our 8th graders with their posters on Good Friday morning.
Some of our 3rd through 8th grade students achieve through their participation in the school choir, the expectation of being active Christians who seek to develop a person relationship with God as demonstrated by participating in liturgies. Chorale is the school choir, under the direction of Dr. Cole, and the students singing in it have the privilege of modelling full participation in liturgies for the
whole school and the wider St. Louise community. At Chorale practices, time is set aside by Dr. Cole to discuss the lyrics of the songs to understand how their message relates to the theme of the upcoming Masses or liturgies. This deeper perspective encourages the choir to sing with greater connection to the lyrics which in turn enhances the prayer of the assembly.
Even in math class, students can demonstrate they are active Christians. For example, in Mrs. Bannick's math classes in grades 6-8, her students read a Bible verse each day and occasionally listen to a Christian song as part of a daily prayer before they start solving math problems. Here is a song and reflection the math students recently listened to and watched.

Throughout March and April, each 1st grader in Mrs. Howell's and Miss Helfen's classes had a Lenten journal. Each week, these 1st grade students added a daily writing-reflection on how they shared God's love or how they grew in God's love. Some examples included a student writing about how she prayed for her parents, a student writing about how he donated books to the class book drive, or a student writing about how she helped a hurt friend. First graders were fortunate enough to have three special visits recently from Father Gary or Seminarian Michael. These men came into the classrooms to teach about Lent and the Bible, as well as to answer some of the 1st graders' religion questions. The students were able to learn so much more about Jesus and his teachings by talking with these experts.
Also developing their personal relationship with God as demonstrated by living out the Gospel Values and participating in liturgies, sacraments and daily prayer are our 2nd graders. Coming up this weekend, the majority of our 2nd graders will be receiving their First Holy Communion. They have been studying about this Sacrament all year. Our 2nd graders in Miss Reynolds' class led the student body in our all-school Holy Thursday Liturgy. With assistance from Mrs. LB, the 2nd graders dressed in costume, rehearsed several times, and then at the Liturgy reenacted the Last Supper and Jesus washing the feet of the Apostles.

Our former art teacher, Mrs. Amy Friedman, came in to teach the 6th graders about the Passover Seder, as a tie-in to the religion curriculum's study of the Old Testament, and the students tried various symbolic Passover foods.

As we are now in May, schoolwide we have started focusing on a new Student Learning Expectation:
- "A St. Louise student is a life-long learner who communicates effectively through writing, speaking, and listening." (SLE #2.2)
Parents can assist their children in understanding and achieving this expectation by talking about how, as students themselves when they were young, and now as adults with jobs, effective writing, speaking, and listening skills are crucial for mom's and dad's success.

Are You Being Called to Get More Involved in Your Child's School?
Serving a three-year term on the Parents' Club Board is a fabulous way to volunteer at St. Louise, as well as a great way to learn the "inside scoop" of all the various events and advancements regarding your child's school. You are committing to approximately six evening meetings during the school year, and would be working with a nice group of fellow parents. Father Fabian Announces His Retirement

To the School Community,
The rumor is true; I am going to retire this year. June 30th will be my last day. I will be residing in Kent, helping out in parishes on the weekends. A new priest will be coming as your parochial vicar starting July 1st. I will have been at St. Louise for seven years. I will soon turn 70 years old. Before the end of June I will give my final homily and there will be a reception after each Mass that weekend. I truly have enjoyed the School Masses and working with the altar servers. The parish has been a real blessing in my life. I will continue to pray for you. Please keep me in your prayers as I transition to being a senior priest.

Volunteers Needed One Week from Saturday
There are two ways that volunteers are needed next Saturday, May 11. First, we have one of two Spring Spruce-Ups next Saturday, from 8AM-12PM, and we need helpers to weed, trim, and rake around the school and parish landscaping. If you can help, please bring yard tools (and a wheelbarrow if you can, as we'll be shoveling some bark) and gather outside the north wing of the original school at 8AM. Please RSVP to our head landscape volunteer,
Jeffrey Hummer, so he knows the size of the work crew.
Secondly, if you're a volunteer for
ANY parish or school group
- so that would be
EVERY SCHOOL PARENT - St. Louise Parish is honoring you on Saturday the 11th at 12PM with a lunch. The Volunteer Appreciation event begins in the church at noon with a brief prayer service, and then a barbecue lunch will be served in the parish hall immediately following.
This event is for adults only please. Thanks for all you do when you volunteer at St. Louise!

WE ARE ONE Auction News
Some days it's overwhelming to see the generosity in our community. From my view here in the Auction Office, we have the most supportive and incredible community, dedicated to one another and our children. Thank you all for being ONE big part of St. Louise, and sharing your time, your stories, your skills, and your financial resources. You are so appreciated!
May is a busy month - especially for Auction Procurement and preparation. So let's break down what you need to know for the coming weeks:
- Your procurement is due by June 10th. That is $225 in items, experiences, Charger Cards, or cash.
- If you would like your children to receive the benefit of Free Dress on June 11, you'll need to exceed the requirement and donate $350 or more.
- We have weekly contests to help you reach these numbers (see the auction website, or the flyer in today's Red Envelope). Each time you donate something from these contests, your children will receive a candy surprise on Friday!
- The first 3 classes to reach 100% of parent participation completing procurement (wow, that's a mouthful!), will receive a Krispy Kreme doughnut party before the end of the school year.
