Folsom Middle sixth grade student wins Fight the Bite poster contest
|
Congratulations to Folsom Middle School's sixth grader, Jaden Song, for winning first place in the grade 4-6 category of the annual "Fight the Bite" art poster contest put on by the
Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito & Vector Control Distric
t as part of Mosquito Awareness Week in an effort to prevent West Nile Virus.
More than 2,000 entries from students in Sacramento and Yolo counties had been submitted; Song received a prize of $200 for his winning entry.
A check of $400 was also presented to FMS. Principal Larry Mahoney received the check on its behalf at Jaden's recognition event in Mrs. Anita Kamath's classroom on Tuesday, April 23.

Peter J. Shields Elementary participates in the
Fuel Up to Play 60
program that encourages kids to live a healthier and active life by bringing activities to their school campus that contribute to this lifestyle.
CBS13 and Good Day Sacramento

visited the campus on April 25 to highlight the school's gardening program for students, garden mural and other healthy activities happening at Peter J. Shields Elementary.

Folsom Cordova student art displayed at Mills Station Arts & Culture Center

Several Folsom Cordova students - and even a few teachers - had their artwork on display at the Mills Station Arts & Culture Center (MACC) in Rancho Cordova for a student art exhibit.
An opening artist reception was held on April 3 and was catered with appetizers by students in Cordova High's Culinary Academy students.
Students in grades K-12, their families and communities were able to enjoy their artwork on display through April 13. Teachers artwork was also on display as well. Many of the students whose artwork was on display participated in the Meet the Masters Art Docent Program which is funded through the
City of Rancho Cordova's Community Enhancement Fund
.
The following students had their art on display at the gallery at MACC: Annie Sethi, Josiah Lopez,and Austin Wingard, Mather Heights Elementary, Landan Hall and Adam Pierce, Williamson Elementary, Brooklyn Johnson, White Rock Elementary, Noah Clark and George Meredith, and Corina Tasci, Navigator Elementary, Sasha Allne, Peter J. Shields Elementary, Samara Guerrero and Sat Hassan Sobhi, Cordova Villa Elementary, Asma Hashmat, Cordova Meadows Elementary.

VIDEO: Students participate in district wide talent show

The second annual Folsom Cordova Unified District Wide Talent Show was held April 24 at Cordova High School. Students participated in the talent show from W.E. Mitchell Middle School, Mills Middle, Sutter Middle and Folsom Middle, as well as Cordova, Folsom and Vista Del Lago High Schools.
Every act was something new. Singing, dancing, juggling, magic and even a human calculator made an appearance. Guitars ranged from acoustic to electric while the pianos played classical to pop. Dancing ranged from hip-hop to k-pop to traditional.
"Folsom Cordova got some mad talent...[it's] something I can't miss" says Stevan Trinh, a junior at Folsom High who came to enjoy the performances.
The acts weren't the only source of entertainment. Masters of Ceremonies Matt Hontz and James Sillas kept the audience on their toes with their quick wits and wide smiles. The bowtie boys even held a small open mic at the end of the show for acts, as well as audience members, to crack a few jokes. "Sutter? I barely know her says Sakthi Sakteesh, the student at Folsom Middle who won first place for singing "Satisfied" from the popular Broadway musical, Hamilton.
Second place went to Omari Williams and Avion Elliot, from Mills Middle, who did an amazing tag team techno dance routine and Third place went to Matteo Maneri, from Vista Del Lago, who cube rooted 36,936,037 down to 333 in 2 seconds.
The Student Advisory Board President, Maira Medina says that "...Last year we decided to make an annual District wide Talent Show. ... SAB has planned this out since our very first meeting back in August. This has been in the making for quite a while. Having a district wide talent show is very important because this allows students from every school showcase what they got. It is a very accepting environment and it's something everyone enjoys very much.... it's an amazing thing to watch."

Community members connected with job opportunities at Annual Spring Job Fair

FCCP Job Center
teamed up once again to host the Annual Spring Job Fair on the campus of Adult Ed. Dozens of visitors were able to visit and meet recruiters from area companies looking to hire staff.
Whether attendees were ready to apply for a job, or just learn more about opportunities, the job fair provided an opportunity to explore and learn about what careers are available. What makes this job fair especially advantageous is that attendees can look to both Adult Ed and the FCCP Job center to learn employability skills they need to be hired. Classes such as Office Technologies and Quickbooks are offered through Adult Ed while Resume Building Assistance, Interviewing Skills Training can be found at the Job Center. Students can even learn English as a Second Language and complete their High School Diploma.

30th Annual Kids Day in the Park a 'super' event!
|
The annual Rancho Cordova Kids Day in the Park once again drew huge crowds of attendees. The theme this year was Superheros, and kids of all ages were able to meet some of their favorite action stars, play games and enjoy delicious treats from the best food trucks in town.
Every year FCUSD has a large showcase at this event, where staff from our programs and schools are able to meet with the community and share the many resources we have.
For instance our Food Services department let families know that free meals are available to children during the summer at several of our schools. Mental Health specialists had helpful information on how parents can have effective communication with their children. We had science experiments for the kids to enjoy and ways for families to sign up for early child education programs. Health Services conducted free hearing and vision tests, and community partner Early Smiles offered free dental screenings.
We always enjoy the opportunity to be a part of this well-loved community event, and send our thanks to the
Cordova Community Council
for orchestrating the day.

Important volunteer update: Is your TB status current?
IMPORTANT: If a fingerprinted volunteer is found to have an expired TB, we will have to remove their status as a volunteer, including their fingerprint records.
To reinstate as a volunteer, you will need to be fingerprinted again. This is a requirement of the Department of Justice.
Deadline to update TB results is May 13.
You can bring the paperwork to the District Office or your school's front office.
