It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want-oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!

Wednesday, May 8, 6:30 pm.
Join us when British writer and radio producer Tim Dee comes to talk about his book Landfill: Notes on Gull Watching and Trash Picking in the Anthropocene. This is the compelling story of how in the Anthropocene we have learned about the natural world, named and catalogued it, and then colonized it, planted it, or filled it with our junk. While most other birds have gone in the opposite direction, hiding away from us, some vanishing forever, gulls continue to tell us how the wild can share our world. Without nostalgia or eulogy, Landfill kicks beneath the littered surface of the things to discover stranger truths. This event is co-sponsored by the Kitsap Audubon Society.

From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home,
by Tembi Locke
This poignant memoir may have been birthed from grief, but the heartbreaking bits are intricately balanced by the beautiful telling of a Sicilian love story. Tembi Locke, an African American actress, meets Saro, a Sicilian chef, while studying abroad in Italy. His family does not approve of the marriage. Regardless, they forge a new life together in the U.S., but their union ends prematurely when Saro is diagnosed with cancer. It is not until his death that Tembi manages to ease her way into being accepted by his Sicilian town and family. This book is an honest exploration of finding one's way again after a painful loss-through food made "from scratch."

A Woman of No Importance: The untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win World War II, by Sonia Purnell
Virginia Hall was an American spy who worked undercover as a journalist throughout WWII for the UK Special Operations Executive (SOE). Fond of languages and excitement, she became an underling for the State Department so she could live abroad. She constantly hit the glass ceiling at the State Department, so she volunteered for ambulance duty in France at the start of WWII, where she was recruited as a spy by SOE acting in occupied France. She soon became one of the most successful and decorated undercover agents in the French Resistance. This is an astonishing story of a truly amazing woman who slipped through Hitler's clutches and saved untold lives. Purnell's biography of Hall reads like a thriller! ~ Susan

Greek to Me: Adventures of the Comma Queen,
by Mary Norris
An enthusiastic, wandering memoir built around falling in love with a language. Norris's enthusiasm for all things Greek is palpable and infectious, be it the finer points of the Greek language or the visceral pleasures of the seaside towns dotting the Aegean. The stories of her exploits, from shoddy ferries to New York theater to being caught naked on the beach, all bloom from the dual love of the language and the land it inhabits.

A Memory Called Empire: Teixcalaan #1
by Arkady Martine
Clearly inspired by the cultural and diplomatic intricacies of the Eastern Roman Empire, this immersive space opera dwells less on set-piece battles than it does on political intrigue and imperial finery. Thoughtful and at times overwhelming in its detail, the saga's themes of identity, language, and politics make for an immensely satisfying tale.

Endling: The Last (Endling #1),
by Katherine Applegate
Imagine being the very last of your kind, trying to find purpose after the total annihilation of everyone you have ever loved. With a fair number of battles between sword, claw and fire, this Middle Reader story is not for the faint of heart, though it is absolutely perfect for fantasy lovers of all ages. I am specifically enamored with the diverse cast of characters, the expansive world, and the sharp dialogue. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout, and is also a superbly narrated audiobook! Endling will leave you craving more once you've reached the last page. Luckily, it is the first in a trilogy. Ages 10 & up.
