Grant Spotlight: Harbor House Program Gives Women a "Step-Up"
submitted by Alison Fiebig

Grant Award - $10,000
Harbor House/Economic Security for Survivors of Domestic Abuse

The Economic Security for Survivors of Domestic Abuse grant supported a program at Harbor House called "Step Up" which provides survivors of domestic abuse access to education, training and support services they need to move toward economic self-determination, increased wages and jobs with advancement potential.

Financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to control their partners and make them feel alone; it meets the definition of domestic violence. It can include abusers controlling how money is spent; withholding money or "giving an allowance"; withholding basic living resources, medication or food; or not allowing a partner to work or earn money. The consequences of this abuse can be devastating and different for every survivor.

Financial abuse can happen to anyone. It's not based on income, education or level of independence. Harbor House's "Step Up" program gives women the tools they need to move forward in the quest for a job and economic betterment with confidence. The program sets the foundation for financial security so they can take care of themselves and their family.
"In thinking about what our younger women might need to start removing emotional barriers in their life around career, family, self-care, and budgeting, I wanted to build a special Economic Advocacy mentorship program that provides direct networking and feedback from professional women who also happen to be domestic violence survivors.

In the Survivor-2-Survivor Mentorship Program, 4 women, ages 18-29 meet with 4 professional women at Harbor House for 4 weeks. The open conversation and compassionate group setting allows our women to express their fears and vulnerabilities and receive encouraging guidance and next steps - which allows our women to know that success is created and very possible on many levels."

Status of Women in Northeast
 Wisconsin Report

The 2017 Report on the Status of Women in  Northeast Wisconsin is a collaboration between the Women's Funds in Fond du Lac, the Fox Valley,  Green Bay and Oshkosh that gives a current and comprehensive picture of the most pressing issues for women and girls in Northeast Wisconsin. We will be featuring highlights from the report throughout the year.

Violence Against Women - Key Findings
  • Regionally, both the number of reported domestic abuse incidents and certain sexual assault crimes reported to law enforcement have decreased.
  • There were no domestic violence-related homicides in Northeast WI in 2015; however, almost half of domestic violence homicides in the region since 2000 occurred in Brown County.
Although the reported number of sexual assaults, domestic abuse incidents  and domestic violence related homicides have shown improvement, it is important to note that the majority of these crimes go unreported and there is still much work to be done.
