Harbor House/Economic Security for Survivors of Domestic Abuse
The Economic Security for Survivors of Domestic Abuse grant supported a program at Harbor House called "Step Up" which provides survivors of domestic abuse access to education, training and support services they need to move toward economic self-determination, increased wages and jobs with advancement potential.
Financial abuse is a common tactic used by abusers to control their partners and make them feel alone; it meets the definition of domestic violence. It can include abusers controlling how money is spent; withholding money or "giving an allowance"; withholding basic living resources, medication or food; or not allowing a partner to work or earn money. The consequences of this abuse can be devastating and different for every survivor.
Financial abuse can happen to anyone. It's not based on income, education or level of independence. Harbor House's "Step Up" program gives women the tools they need to move forward in the quest for a job and economic betterment with confidence. The program sets the foundation for financial security so they can take care of themselves and their family.
