THE ARTS = JOBS, ECONOMIC PROSPERITY, TAX REVENUE FOR OC
SOURCE: 2018 OTIS REPORT ON THE CREATIVE ECONOMY
Over 57,000 people in Orange County work in the creative sector. In terms of the County's GDP, the creative economy accounts for 4% of it, and generates nearly $1 Billion in local and state tax revenue. These are the findings of the newly released 2018 Otis Report on the Creative Economy of the Los Angeles Region and State of California. Arts Orange County is a media partner for the report, which is prepared annually by the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation for the Otis College of Art & Design. Statewide, the creative sector produces over $400 Billion in economic output and generates over $16 Billion in tax revenue, employing 1.6 Million people in 2016--a whopping 38% increase over 2011. In the LA Region, which includes Orange County, 1 in 7 people are employed in the creative sector. "The Otis Report remains one of the most important tools in our work advocating for arts education and public funding for the arts," commented Arts Orange County President & CEO Rick Stein. "Artistic skills are valuable, jobs are plentiful, and careers in the creative sector pay well, debunking the starving artist stereotype. And policy makers are increasingly taking note that investing a portion of the tax bounty generated by all this into arts education and arts organizations can help grow the creative ecology and its productivity even more."

HOSTS WORKSHOPS & AWAITS RETURN TO AMPHITHEATRE
Through support from the City of Garden Grove, Shakespeare Orange County will be presenting two summer student workshops at The Courtyard Center in Village Park, just across the grass from the Festival Amphitheatre.  The amphitheatre is the venue where SOC normally performs--but this year, construction delays forced the closure of its summer season. SOC hopes all will be complete and ready for their return in summer 2019. More here.

A new book has been released about the work by the late photographers Mark Chamberlain and Jerry Burchfield, entitled The Laguna Canyon Project: Refining Artivism. The two created "The Laguna Canyon Project" to challenge and prevent the suburban development of one of Southern California's most iconic canyons and pristine open spaces. Combining artistic vision with political activism they produced a historic multi-phased environmental art project (1980-2010) that inspired Laguna Beach residents to take charge of their own destiny and to avert an ecological disaster. Containing more than 130 photographs and inspiring written pieces from artists, activists, and collaborators on the Laguna Canyon Project, this book is the first to provide a comprehensive photographic and written history of the historic movement.
