Dear Colleagues:

Tomorrow is convocation for our College of Dentistry. More than a thousand people will gather in the Mershon Auditorium to celebrate the graduation of our dental hygiene and dental classes of 2019. It is an event that makes everyone in the audience feel so excited and proud!

Although the official ceremony is what everyone looks forward to on this day, there are a number of other related events that make up this most special occasion. One in particular is a favorite of mine -- the post-convocation reception. That event is where I get to congratulate our students' family members and friends. It is a pleasure to meet them and shake their hands as we celebrate this milestone in the lives of their graduates.

This part of our convocation is especially important to me because I am able to see how our graduates' relatives and friends show their support and their joy. I also get to learn more about where our graduates come from, what their lives were like before dental school, and the help they received during their time in Postle Hall. In turn, I am able to share the experiences I had with our graduates and talk about what makes our faculty so proud to have had them in our dental hygiene and dental programs.

Another feature that makes this reception my favorite part of convocation is the fact that I get to meet so many members of our graduates' extended families. How touching it is to visit with as many as four generations of a family -- grandparents, parents, siblings, and the children of our graduates -- all at once! It tells me so much about our students, the experiences and added responsibilities they have had, and the amazing pride their families feel about their achievements.

Of course, I will enjoy every minute of tomorrow's celebration and take away something special from each part of the occasion, but I can't wait to connect with the family and friends of our graduates. To all of them, my thanks and my congratulations!
