Record-setting amount of scholarships awarded at Honors Night
|
 During last week's 65th annual Honors Night, 117 college scholarships totaling
$241,588 were awarded to graduating Stoughton High School seniors.
That surpasses last year's total of
$238,450 in scholarships and is a new record for our school district!
We once again want to thank our community for its support!

Lunches for Vikings returns June 11
|
Lunches for Vikings, our summer meals program, returns June 11!
Through this program, free, nutritious meals are available five days a week for children who are in need and who live in the Stoughton Area School District. The program is a collaborative effort of the whole community, with our school district, city and youth center, faith communities, and area businesses working together.
This summer, lunches will be available Monday-Friday, June 11-Aug. 31 (excluding July 4) at the following locations and times:
- 11:30 - 11:50 a.m. - Kegonsa Elementary School (near the front door)
- 12:00 - 12:20 p.m. - Stoughton High School (by the baseball diamond on Jackson Street)
- 12:30 - 12:50 p.m. - Bay View Heights (909 Charles Lane outside the office)
These free sack lunches will include a sandwich, fruit or vegetable, snack (chips, pretzels, etc.) and a water.

Sign up now for Girls Build Guitars program this summer
|
Electric guitar building is back in the Stoughton Fab Lab!
On June 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 20, 21, and 22, girls entering grades 8-12 will have the opportunity to build their own solid body electric guitar. A $25 course fee will be required.

Annual Composers Concert showcases original student music
|
Did you know that Stoughton High School students compose and perform their own original music?
See and hear for yourself at the annual Composers Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, May 25, at the Stoughton Village Players Theater, 255 E. Main St. Check out the video above to hear a selection of music and listen to a pair of students share their experience composing music.

SHS students now have wider access to eBooks, audiobooks
|
 Stoughton High School students have 24/7 access to eBooks and audiobooks in the library's digital collection thanks to a new program, OverDrive.
Students can immediately enjoy their selections on their Chromebooks in the browser. There are no apps to download. Titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period, so there are no late fees!
For students to get started they should:
- Go to the SASD homepage and click on the Students portal
- Click on the OverDrive icon (pictured at left)
- Log in using their SASD username and password
- Borrow an item and begin reading / listening
Students can access OverDrive during the summer on smartphones, tablets and
computers by following the directions above.

Sandhill Fun Run raises funds to support students
|
 Sandhill Elementary School and its Working for Kids group hosted a Fun Run on May 8 to help raise money for new playground and outdoor classroom equipment.
It was an event full of high-fives, encouragement from staff members, smiles and of course, exercise!

Kegonsa Fuel Up leaders promote healthy lifestyles during visit to Lambeau Field
|
Five student leaders for Kegonsa's
Wisconsin - Fuel Up to Play 60 program were selected to attend the annual Student Summit event held in Green Bay earlier this month.
The students, along with school counselor Jake Schultz and physical education teacher Melinda Dozois, spent the day participating in various activities at
Lambeau Field promoting healthy eating and exercise.
They spent their afternoon running through drills with Green Bay Packer players Mason Crosby, Davon House and Blake Martinez.
The students and staff members had a great time and represented Kegonsa Elementary and the City of Stoughton well.
The Wisconsin Dairy Council, National Dairy Council (NDC) and the National Football League (NFL) have teamed up to encourage students to exercise for at least 60 minutes per day and choose a healthy variety of fat-free and low-fat dairy products, fruits, vegetables and whole grains through the Fuel Up to Play 60 program.

Gus, the yellow Labrador Retriever who has become a regular presence at Fox Prairie this year, has an Instagram account to encourage students to keep reading over the summer.
At school, Gus has provided students with companionship while they read and with social and emotional support

SHS art students support stormwater awareness
|
Do you know where the rain that washes into storm drains goes?
Ask the students in Mrs. Phillips' Advanced Art class and they'll tell you all about how the water that enters our storm drains travels to area lakes, rivers and streams carrying any trash and pollutants it runs across with it. They may even give you some tips on actions we can take as a community to reduce stormwater runoff and improve the quality of the stormwater that enters our waters.
These students participated in a new program led by the Madison Area Stormwater Partnership, Dane County and the Dane Arts Mural Arts (DAMA) that uses art as a vessel to learn about water pollution and solutions. The goal of the program is to educate future generations about simple actions they can take to protect our precious water resources and have them teach others. After learning about stormwater, students were asked to draw pictures and write simple messages to help others better understand where their stormwater goes and why it's important to "Keep It Clean". Drawings were collected by local artists at Dane Arts Mural Arts and used to inspire several storm drain mural designs. Students and Rodney Scheel, director of Planning and Development for the City of Stoughton, were presented with several options to choose from and selected their favorite.
On May 23, a DAMA artist painted the selected mural design with the help of some of our students on the storm drain located at the back of Stoughton High School by the tennis courts. This mural will be one of 20 unique designs to be painted on highly visible storm drains across Dane County. Summer EXCEL is around the corner
|
Summer EXCEL is our District's summer program for students currently in Grades K-8. This year Session 1 is June 18 - 28 (no classes June 29), and Session 2 is July 2 - 13 (no classes July 4). Classes start at 8 a.m. and end at 10:55 a.m. at Stoughton High School.
Our District also offers "Getting Ready for 4K and 5K" for students entering these grades in fall 2018. These classes, however, are from 8:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at Fox Prairie Elementary School.
Online registration for Summer EXCEL classes began Monday, April 16. In order to register for Summer EXCEL Grade K-8, you MUST have an active Campus Portal account. Parents do not need a Campus Portal Account to register for 4K and 5K. Register for these classes on the Google form online at
www.stoughton.k12.wi.us (schools/Summer EXCEL).

Animal Science students go on fishing outing
|
Students in River Bluff Middle School's Animal Science class were able to participate in some fishing at Division Park last week.
The Animal Science class is an elective in which students learn to a
nalyze the interrelationships between humans and domesticated animals and gain an understanding of responsible animal management procedures and of careers in agriculture.

 The Stoughton High School Band program has a new logo and will have new uniforms in the fall.
The uniforms were designed by Brent Becker of Stanbury Uniforms. Check out the renderings below. The rendering on the left is for band members, while the rendering on the right is the new drum major uniform.

SASD begins comprehensive facilities study

A comprehensive study of facilities in the Stoughton Area School District is now underway.
The study will help our District detail the condition of existing infrastructure, identify any upcoming maintenance needs and explore how we can maximize our learning spaces.

Academic teams thrive in recent competitions
|
Stoughton students have made strong showings in academic competitions recently.
At Stoughton High School, the Quiz Bowl team of Noah Lamberty, Noah McKay, Collin Ace and Coltrane Bautch won the UW-Madison tournament on April 22. Collin Ace was the top scorer in the competition, while Gabrielle Skerpan took second and Noah Lamberty took fourth.
The SHS Quiz Bowl program has qualified for the national tournament for seven straight years.
This weekend, the Quiz Bowl team will compete in the national tournament in Atlanta, Ga.
The SHS Forensics Team, meanwhile, also excelled in the State Tournament on April 20. Congratulations to Raven Jensen, Rain Collar and Alyssa Wicks for receiving perfect score golds at State Forensics. Congratulations silver State winners Sarah Matthews, Mara Hann, Brianna and Gabrielle Skerpan, Zack DeGroff, Gladys Wentorf and Sophia Thompson.
Congratulations to bronze State forensics winners Emma Girling, Alex Annen, Ben Howery, Collin Ace and Aaron Thompson.
At River Bluff Middle School, students pushed themselves to accept a new challenge  by recently participating in the Noetic Math Contest, a semiannual problem-solving contest for elementary and middle school students.
A number of students received special recognitions! Kyle Gibson was the 6th grade Team Winner and also received the National Honor Roll Medal - a significant distinction! Evan Muchka took 2nd place and received the National Honor Roll medal as well. Will Hollister, Ella Hembrook, Ethan Soderboom and Trinity Dreyer received an Honorable Mention award certificate.
In 8th grade, Emily Newquist and Kaylea Midthun tied, which makes them both Team Winners!

Math Meet
team took first place at the Regional Math Meet on April 26. Clare Borchart took first place on the team and 4th place in the overall individual competition. The team was to compete at the Mega Meet at Madison College on Wednesday, May 23.

Students showcase knowledge, versatility at German Day
|
Students showcased their knowledge of German through poetry readings, spelling competitions, skit presentations, Pictionary, charades, solo and ensemble music performances, and a poster and meme competition.
This year Stoughton High School students earned 5th place overall!
A total of 533 students representing 37 middle school and high school German programs from near and far traveled to Madison for German Day. The theme of the competition was Wie Deutsch mein Leben verändert hat (how German has changed my life).
Students reflected on the ways that learning German positively influences their lives. Volunteer judges from the UW campus community were impressed not only by students' linguistic, musical, creative, and artistic talents but also by their willingness to step outside of their comfort zone and take a risk by competing at German Day.

Sandhill kindergarten awarded $2,000 grant
Sandhill's kindergarten teachers recently were awarded a $2,000 grant from the Wisconsin Retired Educators' Foundation. Sandhill educators Lindsay Ott and Abby DuCharme went to the organization's meeting to accept the award on behalf of Sandhill.

56 students inducted into Honor Society
A total of 56 Stoughton High School juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society on April 27 during a ceremony at the school's Performing Arts Center.
The ceremony included current officers speaking about the four pillars of Service, Character, Scholarship and Leadership. A reception for families and students followed the ceremony.

17 seniors are 2018 Top Scholars
Seventeen graduating Stoughton High School seniors are Top Scholars for 2018.
These students have maintained a 4.0 grade point average through seven semesters at SHS. The Badger Conference recognizes each of the school's Top Scholars for their academic accomplishments.

Fox Prairie fourth grade visits Museum of Contemporary Art
Students saw and discussed many different styles of art while at the museum.
Meanwhile, several Fox Prairie students will have their artwork displayed at the museum,
227 State St.,
through the Art on Tour program in June.
Exhibition hours are 12-4 p.m. June 2-16. The exhibition will be closed on June 4 and 11.

River Bluff educators nominated for Crystal Apple Award
Congratulations to River Bluff educators Sarah Miller and Tim Koplin for their nominations by students for the Channel 15 Crystal Apple Award.
Miller, a reading specialist, was nominated by a student who said she is "very kind, supportive and helpful to students. She pushes students to do better but is very understanding when she knows the student has done the best they can."
Koplin, an eighth-grade math teacher, was nominated by a student who said he is "my math teacher and my inspiration. He helps me understand the problems and is super sweet, and all around hilarious. He is always smiling and thinks I could be a math teacher as well. He is the teacher everyone should want."

Sixth-grader takes first place in Yahara River Writers contest
Sixth-grader Sarah Anschutz captured a first place award in the Yahara River Writers contest for a poem titled "A Word of Hope for Troubled Hearts."
The Yahara River Writers contest is an annual writing and cartooning contest for students who are in grades 5-8 and in the Dane County area. Students can submit entries in categories that include Story, Editorial, Poetry and Cartoon. The judges' scoring rubric for poetry includes a student's ideas, technique, use of language, organizing and editing.

Fox seeks volunteers for garden summer maintenance program
Looking for a way to be involved in Fox Prairie's school garden? The summer maintenance program offers families and community members the opportunity to harvest food to take home in exchange for performing basic gardening tasks in Fox Prairie's Outdoor Classroom and Garden.
Participants choose a one-week period during the summer months in which they commit to volunteering 2-4 hours of their time watering and weeding Fox Prairie's garden. Participants commit to visiting the garden at least two times during their chosen week and may harvest available fruits/vegetables to take home with them each time they volunteer.
