What can we do in our communities to create a culture of inclusion where young people stand up for themselves and others? In a powerful sign of hope and action, s tudents from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Florida are inspiring people across the nation through their #NeverAgain campaign to stop gun violence. NIOT committees across the U.S. helped support their youth in local marches and rallies. 

In this E-News NIOT recognizes Becki Cohn Vargas, former Not In Our School Director who made youth engagement a priority for NIOT. We also spotlight cities in Oregon, Indiana, Washington and California that are using the NIOT model to address hate and bias.

Bend, Oregon Residents Gather to Launch Not In Our Town
Over 100 people attended a screening and discussion of the NIOT film When Hate Happens Here on March 5, and 50 diverse community members, a racially diverse mix of city council members and city officials, law enforcement, educators, faith groups and activists, spent three hours together the next day to learn how to launch Not In Our Town and build a local movement.  Read more  about the issues driving this town to stand up, and their ideas for action.

Pioneering anti-bullying leader Becki Cohn Vargas has left her position as Director of Not In Our School to focus on her health and treatment for ovarian cancer. Edmonds, WA:
The Washington State Human Rights Commission and Snohomish County Commission on Human Rights to hosted a   Not In Our Town screening  and discussion on responses to hate crimes and bias incidents.

Evansville, IN:
After racist incidents occurred in Evansville, Indiana  schools, the EVSC Superintendent Dr. David Smith called for a community-wide effort to address hate and intolerance. The Human Rights Commission and the Mayor's Office heeded the call and on  February 1 , the  community convened  for a Not In Our Town  screening  of  A Bowling Green Legacy .
