City Visions is on view at Copley Society of Art through June 15. This show is a solo exhibition featuring the photographs of Roger Palframan, who works in Boston but is originally from Great Britain. His most recent work, such as the work shown in City Visions, focuses on organized environments and the unexpected patterns and rhythms they produce. He utilizes shape, form and line to reveal detail and texture and create striking images. His City Visions photographs depict tight clusters of buildings in cities like Boston and San Francisco, emphasizing the scale and dimension of each city's landscape. They give off the crowded feeling of city life while simultaneously revealing the man-made beauty of each scene. Anyone who lives in such an environment can relate to the cluttered-yet-organized landscapes. Addison Gallery of American Art is showing Harlem: In Situ and John Goodman: not recent color through July 31. Harlem: In Situ is an exhibition showing nearly 100 years of art created in Harlem, New York. It aims to explore the impact that Harlem has had on American culture and art, along with its periods of growth, new styles and redevelopment and gentrification. "One of the great centers of cultural production in the United States, Harlem's incredible past and present make this neighborhood a wonderful subject for the Addison's ongoing engagement with the theme of place," says Judith F. Dolkart, The Mary Stripp & R. Crosby Kemper Director of the Addison Gallery of American Art. Also a part of that theme of place, manifesting as Addison Gallery of American Art's Who Is America? series, is John Goodman: not recent color. This exhibition examines 1970s South Boston with large-scale color photographs, most of which have never before been exhibited. Photographer and Boston native, John Goodman discovered a series of old color slides, rescued them from storage and scanned and printed them to create the works on view. The works capture the enduring essence of Boston in fleeting yet colorful and striking moments. Goodman says about his own artistic experience that he "was emotionally drawn to the vibrancy of the street with its energy and layers of time and texture." That energy permeates each photograph in not recent color. Both exhibitions at Addison Gallery of American Art reveal important pieces of America's history and heritage. Center for Contemporary Printmaking is showing Requiem for Ashokan: Kate McGloughlin through May 19. This exhibition features the work of painter Kate McGloughlin, centered around the devastation and loss experienced by her ancestors due to and during the creation of the Ashokan Reservoir in New York. The exhibition includes a handmade artist's book by McGloughlin as well as written text and audio files illustrating the story from the points of view of both the settlers and the immigrants. McGloughlin was raised in rural New York and gained a strong respect for nature and the local landmarks. She's been painting landscapes since age 16, falling in love with the art after she was commissioned to paint a historic barn for a local merchant. Requiem for Ashokan is a manifestation of this love and reverence, exploring the effects of the Ashokan Reservoir on McGloughlin's ancestors and, consequently, herself.
