NEWS FROM BROOKSIDE SCHOOL

April is Autism Awareness Month and Brookside has been busy bringing awareness throughout the month. Every Tuesday, we were sure to wear "blue" in recognition of Autism Awareness and every Friday, we wore Autism Awareness Apparel. In addition, Brookside Elementary School hosted a week long lemonade stand to raise money for Parents of Autistic Children (POAC).  Students from our Autism program joined forces with members of Student Council to sell lemonade and help raise awareness.  Students worked together through all lunch periods from April 2 to April 5 and sold approximately 35 gallons of lemonade that raised $638.00!

Math Madness

"4 times 5?"
"20"
"6 times 8?"
"48"

These were the excited voices heard from the 4th grade classrooms at Brookside School on March 22, 2019 as the students competed in Math Madness. In honor of the college basketball tournament, fourth grade teachers at Brookside decided to integrate the events into our math curriculum. Students dressed in their favorite college attire or colors and enjoyed playing the fast-paced math activity. Around the World is a math game teachers have been playing in their classrooms for a long time where one student challenges another student in a basic math fact. The student who says the answer first continues in a circle challenging students until they have completed the circle or have gone around the world. "Our idea was to encourage the students to practice their math facts at home," said Ms. Cruz. "Once we mentioned the activity to them, they wanted to practice at school each afternoon while buses were being called." The champion was Vineel Vanga and the runner up was Pratham Rao. The students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they look forward to competing again. One student said it best, "This rocked!"

Oak Tree Recognizes Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month

Oak Tree School recognized Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month in a variety of ways. On April 2nd the entire school wore blue and each class created a puzzle piece that depicted one way to choose kindness. The puzzle pieces were then put on display for the entire school to see and our morning announcements also shared these inspiring messages. Throughout the month teachers read a book or showed a video to their class that answered questions about autism. Each student received a school created Choose Kindness bookmark to color as well. During the week of April 2-5 students were encouraged to eat lunch or play with someone new on the playground or talk to someone sitting on the Choose Kindness bench.   It is our hope that that these acts of kindness will carry on throughout the year.

Makerspace Nights at Oak Tree

Problem solving, creative thinking, collaborating, inventing, experimenting, designing......these are just some of the ways Oak Tree students explore the Makerspace located in our Media Center. On March 27th and 28th grade 2 and grade 3 students were able to show their parents exactly how it's done at our second annual Makerspace Nights. For one hour, parents rotated to four different stations to get a glimpse of what their children experience when they visit during the school day. The stations included Osmos, Coding, Robots, and the actual Makerspace area which also houses our 3-D printer, a Lego table, and a wide assortment of building and craft materials. . Hosted by members of the Oak Tree Makespace Committee, each rotation invited parents to play, construct, tinker and interact. The Monroe Township Library was also on hand with their 3-D printer to share some of the programs that they offer.

Oak Tree Raise Over $9,000 for Heart Association!

Oak Tree Elementary School would like to thank everyone for their generous support of our school's Kids Heart Challenge program which took place in February.  Together as a school community we raised over $9,000 for the American Heart Association.  These donations will support life-saving efforts such as research and education to reach populations at risk for heart disease and stroke.  Being a part of the Kids Heart Challenge program is the perfect fit for our students as it encourages heart healthy behavior, as they pledge to be more physically active, make healthy choices and help those in need.  During the weeks leading up to the event, they were engaged in various cardiovascular activities all while learning how nutrition and physical activity can help them live longer, healthier lives. It also helped promote community service by teaching our students how to help others.  It is a win win for everyone involved!
