A letter from 2010-2020 Fellows Chair:
Ellen M. Jakovic

Dear Colleagues,

As the 2020 ABA Midyear Meeting approaches, I am excited to share with you the schedule of Fellows events that will be taking place shortly in Austin, Texas.

Our program will begin on Friday afternoon, February 14, with a free CLE research seminar entitled "Speaking for the Dying: Life, Death and Law." The panel will include ABF Researcher Susan P. Shapiro, who will share her findings following over two years of observations of life-and-death decision-making in intensive care units in Chicago.

Later that evening, join us for a night of music, food and friends at the Fellows Opening Reception, taking place at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. Guests will have full access to the museum, including special exhibits.

The next morning, Fellows and their guests may join us for a two-hour guided bus tour of Austin's musical heritage, featuring key neighborhoods and iconic venues.

The 64th Annual Fellows Awards Reception and Banquet will take place Saturday evening, and will feature keynote remarks by Jamie Gorelick, Patron Fellow and past Deputy Attorney General of the United States. We will also honor our three outstanding 2020 Fellows Award winners, featured below.

Finally, please join us on Sunday evening for our Fellows Sing-Along. Fellows may participate in singing, or enjoy a nightcap with friends as a relaxing way to close out the conference.

Please find a detailed schedule of all Fellows events at Midyear below.

On behalf of the Fellows Officers, we look forward to seeing you in Austin!

Sincerely,

Ellen M. Jakovic

Fellows CLE Research Seminar (CLE Requested): "Speaking for the Dying: Life, Death and Law"

Seven in ten Americans over the age of 60 who require medical decisions in the final days of life lack capacity to make them. For many of us, the biggest life-and-death decisions --literally--of our lives or of those we love will be made by someone else.  The recent publication of  Speaking for the Dying: Life-and-Death Decisions in Intensive Care  by ABF research professor, Susan Shapiro, coincided with the passage of a new ABA resolution that reconsiders the role of lawyers in advance care planning. This research seminar marries these empirical and policy perspectives. Shapiro draws upon more than two years of observations in intensive care units to describe how life-and-death decisions are made. In addition to describing the new ABA guidance for lawyers, the panel will also provide the perspective of an ethics consultant facing these wrenching decisions on the ground, day after day.

This program is sponsored by the ABA Commission on Law and Aging, ABA Health Law Section, ABA Judicial Division, ABA Real Property, Trust and Estate Law Section, ABA Section of Family Law, ABA Senior Lawyers Division, ABA Solo, Small Firm and General Practice Division, and ABA Young Lawyers Division.

Moderated By: Jo Ann Engelhardt,
Managing Director and Senior Client Advisor, Bessemer Trust

Panelists:
Susan P. Shapiro,  Research Professor, American Bar Foundation
Virginia A. Brown,  Assistant Professor, Dell Medical School, The University of Texas at Austin

Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Late last year, it was announced that ABF Patron Fellow and Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been honored with the $1 million
2019  Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture   . Ginsburg donated the award money to five dozen organizations that reflect her personal causes, including the    American Bar Foundation (ABF) . She previously served as an ABF board member, is a long-time ABF  Patron Fellow , and received the ABF Fellows Outstanding Scholar Award in 1995.

"The ABF is honored to be among the organizations that received an award donation from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg," said ABF Executive Director Ajay K. Mehrotra.
