Summer Volunteering
Now that sunshine and gorgeous weather have arrived, there are new volunteer opportunities to capitalize on. People will want to spend their time soaking in the sun during the summer months. By classifying appropriate opportunities as an "Outdoor" interest, volunteers can give back while they enjoy the weather and are currently featured as Summer Volunteering for maximum exposure.

Examples of Summer Volunteering:
* Community gardens
* Summer camps
* Races (5k, half-marathons, run/walks)
* Friends of the trails
* Bird counting
* Dog walking

Spotlight: Boardwalk Academy at United Way of Dane County
Leaders of volunteers aim to have diverse nonprofit boards that reflect the populations we serve, but that's easier said than done. United Way of Dane County has developed a creative way to combat this issue, by hosting an annual six-week class for those who are underrepresented on nonprofit boards. BoardWalk Academy works with these individuals to "build awareness in the cohort of the skills and experiences they already have that are valuable to nonprofit boards," explains Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps Volunteer Wisconsin member Laura Rogers. Rogers is currently serving a second term with United Way of Dane County, and her primary duty is to coordinate the BoardWalk Academy. She adds, "We give them [BoardWalk Academy participants] the background information about what a board is/does, and show them that they already have a lot to offer and know what questions to ask. It's about building confidence and knowledge of nonprofits and boards, but the people already have valuable insights, perspectives and passions about nonprofits and services. We aim to offer this program to people who are underrepresented in leadership roles such as women, people of color, and people impacted by services, but anyone can apply... We hope that BoardWalk will encourage someone to consider being on a board that wouldn't have thought of themselves as 'board material' before."

Get LinkedIn to Skilled Volunteers
It can be difficult to find skilled volunteers using traditional volunteer matching websites and your organization's website, even with targeted recruitment messages. Thanks to LinkedIn for Good, you can now target recruitment messages to professionals on a site they're already visiting.

LinkedIn for Good allows nonprofits to create an organization profile, similar to a company profile, which will help you grow your social media presence, get the word out about your mission, and find volunteers as well as employees. Positions you post will show up in regular job searches, and can be found by job type "Volunteer."

Using LinkedIn for Good provides discounted job post prices compared to a regular company profile. Similar to Facebook Ads, you select the maximum daily budget and only pay when candidates click on your position. One dollar equates to one candidate viewing the listing. Listings can be closed at any time.

Don't Wait, Start Using Wait Lists Today
Volunte er Wisconsin has activated a brand new feature-wait lists. A wait list can be utilized when you select "Runs Until" or "Happens On" for an Opportunity Duration and enter a finite number of volunteers needed in the Capacity field. Once the Capacity is met, volunteers will now automatically have the option to join a wait list. The waitlist can be accessed at the bottom of the Opportunity page, and can also be exported as an Excel document.

To see step-by-step instructions and learn more about Wait Lists, visit the Help article here.
Wisconsin Volunteer Coordinators Association (WVCA) Professional Achievement Award Winner 2018: Shawn Steen, Literacy Network of Dane County
Ms. Shawn Steen was nominated for the WVCA Professional Achievement Award by her supervisor at the Literacy Network of Dane County, Jennifer Peterson. Below, we have summarized the impressive nomination letter:

Shawn has served as Literacy Network's Director of Volunteer Services since 2010. Shawn has placed nearly 2,000 volunteers over the years. Her professional achievements include moving the organization away from a "warm bodies" recruiting approach to using thoughtful position descriptions, annual applications, placement calendars, and more effective processes. Shawn has also increased retention through improved data tracking and regular surveying to ensure volunteer engagement. She supports staff program managers as they work with volunteers, and constantly seeks to improve processes and practices around volunteer management. What's more, her communication with volunteers is infused with the enthusiasm, humor, and high expectations that characterize her work.

Shawn has a strong record of volunteering, including eight years as a member of the board of Dane County Administrators of Volunteer Services (DCAVS) as well as a member of the Speakers Bureau for United Way of Dane County. Shawn also volunteers as an event/promotions assistant at community radio station WORT (89.9 FM), and enacts her commitment to democracy as a Chief Elections Inspector.

In many ways, Shawn personifies how non-profits can make their greatest impact: when love and care for others are scaled up with technical prowess and efficient, people-centered processes, lives can be changed for the better.

Congratulations, Shawn! Your extraordinary efforts are appreciated by coworkers, peers, and volunteers alike!

Friday, June 1-Children's Day
Does your organization work with or for children? If so, Children's Day is an easy way to get your followers to interact with your organization or share information. Find and share a powerful statistic that pertains to your organization's mission: education, abuse, hunger, learning, etc.

Post to share: It's Children's Day! We want to celebrate every child for being their extraordinary selves. As Whitney Houston sings, "I believe the children are our future, Teach them well and let them lead the way... Let the children's laughter remind us how we used to be".

Wednesday, July 18-Nelson Mandela Day
A day to celebrate and further the work of humanitarian Nelson Mandela, observed on his birthday, July 18. Official resources are available, however you will need to provide basic information about your organization to unlock the free resources.
