Connections | May 2019

Every Woman's Place for Support, Connections and Community.

Join us for our second annual Open Mic Night!
Are you interested in showcasing your skills, connecting with women in the arts, and hearing from inspiring artists? Save the date - our second annual Open Mic Night  is May 29! We're partnering with Calgary spoken-word poet Sally Njoroge, who will host an evening of connection and art for women in Calgary.

Our Open Mic Night began in 2018 as a part of our Artist in Residence program, which connects women in our community with talented women artists. Open Mic Night strives to be a safe space for women of all backgrounds to share their work and hear from others. Event emcee Sally Njoroge will kick things off with a performance of her own, and will take some time to share her story as an artist living and working in Calgary.

After hearing from Sally, participants will be invited to share their voices - a mic will be provided but bring your own instruments. This event will run from 6 - 8 pm,  for event details or to RSVP click here.

Calgary Climate Strike

As part of Fridays for Future, young people around Canada are skipping school and peacefully striking in front of City Halls to draw attention to the climate crisis.

A local climate event is taking place in front of Calgary City Hall (municipal building) from 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm on Friday May 3. This is a youth-led event, but allies of all ages are welcome to attend. Details can be found here.

Explore the neighbourhood with our Jane's Walks!
Spring is in the air, and we're celebrating by getting out and exploring Calgary as a part of the Jane's Walk Calgary weekend!  Jane's Walk is a global festival of free neighbourhood walking tours, and during the weekend of May 3,4 and 5 over 80 tours will be held in and around Calgary.

As a part of the Jane's Walk weekend, we'll be hosting not one, but two opportunities to explore our neighbourhood together! First up, join us Friday May 3 at 6:30 pm for our  Girls Walking Tour!  It's no secret that girls experience issues unique to their gender, and this walk will show participants the neighbourhood of Bridgeland through the eyes of girls in Calgary. This walk is developed and led by girls in Grades 5 - 12, in partnership with the Women's Centre Girl Programs and the Aboriginal Friendship Centre of Calgary's Youth Mentorship Program.

On day two of Jane's Walk weekend, join us for our Feminist Walk , and explore Calgary through a Gender-Plus lens. Join us on May 4 at 12:00 pm to walk through Bridgeland and East Village together. W e will discuss urban planning through a gender-plus lens, exploring how the layout of a city affects women and individuals from diverse communities. People of all genders and ages are welcome at both event.

Click here for more information about our Girls Walk, and here for our Feminist Walk. No RSVPs are required for these events.

Run Walk or Wheel for the Women's Centre!
The Scotiabank Calgary Marathon takes place on Sunday May 26!

Join the Women's Centre's team to run in support of women in our community! Funds raised will go to our Direct Assistance program, which women accessed over 16,000 times last year to receive food and personal care items like shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, tampons, and body wash.

There are lots of ways to support the Women's Centre. You can walk, run, donate, share our fundraising page, or cheer runners on from the sidelines on race day.
