Clergy Gather to Work toward Racial Healing

This week the clergy of the Diocese gathered together for their Spring Clergy Conference. The program was led by Dr. Catherine Meeks, Executive Director of the Absalom Jones Center for Racial Healing in Atlanta.
Dr. Meeks helped the clergy reflect on the reality that racism is a chronic illness in our society. She challenged them to think about Jesus' question to the man by the pool at Bethsaida: "Do you want to be healed?" (John 5), and reminded them that in order to be healed, there is work we are called to do, to destabilize a system of oppression to which we are all connected.
Participants had the opportunity for discussions in small groups, and time to ask Dr. Meeks questions about how they might take this work to their own congregations. She also reminded them that racial healing is a long process, rather than something that can be accomplished all at once. On Wednesday morning, as everyone prepared to depart, she challenged them to share one next step, however small, that they would do to pursue racial healing in their own lives and in the lives of their congregations.
Throughout the three days, participants kept the Daily Office, with meditations offered by different clergy at each service. These meditations offered a chance for centering, challenge, and reflection on a personal level, to match the work done during the program time. As always, your clergy also took advantage of time to gather together, to catch up, share stories, play, and learn together.

Regarding Delegates to the Diocesan Convention
and Election of the XI Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia
T
his is a reminder that the new Article III, Sec. 2 of the Canons of the Diocese of Georgia will be in effect at the upcoming Convention and Bishop Election of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia on November 14-16, 2019. This Article states that the calculation of each congregation's number of delegates will be based on the Average Sunday Attendance reported on the congregation's previous three parochial reports. The following is an excerpt from the Article III, Sec. 2:
Congregations with an ASA of 99 or less shall be entitled to two Delegates; Congregations with an ASA of 100-199 shall be entitled to three Delegates; Congregations with an ASA of more than 200 shall be entitled to four Delegates. The Average Sunday Attendance for purposes of this canon shall be the average of the ASA reported on the previous three parochial reports extant.
Although Parochial Reports are due on March 1 per the Canons on the Episcopal Church,
the Standing Committee approved June 1 as the new deadline to file the 2018 Parochial Report for purposes of calculating the number of delegates for each congregation. If the 2018 Parochial Report is submitted by June 1, 2019, then the 2018 figures will be used in the three-year calculation of Average Sunday Attendance to determine how many delegates will be allowed to attend and vote at the November Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. If the report is not filed by that date, the calculation will be based on the three most recent Parochial Reports that have been filed.
Also, please note that according to Title I, Canon 2, Sec. 3 of the Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia, absent reason(s) sufficient or satisfactory to the Standing Committee, any Cleric whose congregations' canonically required reports (parochial and audit) have not been made prior to the Convention, may not be seated or vote at Convention.
Thank you for your efforts to make sure that delegate eligibility requirements are fulfilled for the upcoming Diocesan Convention and Election of the Eleventh Bishop of the Diocese of Georgia.

The 198th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia will be held at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro, from 2 PM Thursday, November 14 through 11 AM Saturday, November 16th. This convention will serve as an electing convention for the 11th Bishop of Georgia, while also conducting the usual business of the annual meeting including approving budgets and electing persons to diocesan offices.
The Diocese of Georgia is opening registration earlier than usual to encourage those who require hotel accommodations to make their reservations as soon as possible, as several other events are being held on the college's campus, including a home football game.

Cost for registration is $75 now through August 15; $85 regular registration until October 31 after which registration is $95. Ora et Labora (Pray and Work) with the Creation Care Commission on retreat at Honey Creek, May 17-18. This one-night retreat will include worship, fellowship, and tending to the Ecology Center, rain barrels, and composting system at Honey Creek.
The event kicks off Friday evening with pizza and an inspiring documentary, followed by discussion and Compline.
On Saturday, the group will pray and work, and work and pray, gathering in between for a potluck lunch. Lodging in the cottages is complimentary and meals will be prepared together, so cost will be minimal. For more information or to register, email [email protected].

Toil 'N Sweat: Caring for Honey Creek Takes Place this Weekend!

As any young person who has ever been to a youth event at Honey Creek knows, Honey Creek is a special place. And like all such places, it needs us to help take care of it from time to time! In one month, youth from across the Diocese are invited to come and give back to Honey Creek. During this weekend event, youth will work on projects to help care for Honey Creek, while still taking time to play, pray, and eat together. During last year's Toil 'N Sweat, participants painted the outside of Lodge One, helped clean the Chapel, and cared for plants outside, accomplishing in a weekend activities that the full time staff at Honey Creek don't normally have time to do.
This weekend, in addition to allowing participants to care for Honey Creek, will have more free time than some of our more scheduled programs are able to offer. Come and spend a weekend hanging out and making a difference at this place that is so important to so many.
