2018 MidWinter eNewsletter

Join us during 2018 for a series of workshops and webinars to learn about funding opportunities from the sources themselves; hear presentations from other organizations who have written successful applications; and tour successful funded projects as a method for de-mystifying the process to inspire heritage sites to apply for their own potential preservation projects. The series will feature 3 workshops and 3 webinars - some presented in partnership with the Preservation League of NYS and the Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area/Hudson River Valley Greenway.

Finding Funds for All Your Collections Management Needs
Thursday, March 8, 2018
Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Sites
9:30 AM - 4:00 PM
GHHN Members: $45  NonMembers: $55
Mold, insects, and rodents cause considerable damage to museum, library, and archival collections. Unfortunately, infestations are not usually limited to one collection type, but can spread... to textiles, leather, paper, photographs, baskets, furs, and wooden objects. During this program, conservator Donia Conn will help attendees learn to identify a range of common insect and rodent pests; how to identify active and inactive mold; and how to prevent and respond to infestations on a small budget. Afterwards, we will focus on identifying grant opportunities for the preservation and conservation of damaged or endangered collections and historic interiors: the NYSCA/GHHN Conservation Treatment Grant Program, the NYSCA/GHHN Collection Needs Assessment Grant Programs, as well as state and federal funding sources. Workshop fee includes a lite breakfast, networking luncheon, resource materials, and site tour.

NYSCA/GHHN Creativity Incubator:
Western NY Session

Save the Date - May 1, 2018!
In these days of changing demographics, shrinking attendance,
tightened budgets, increased competition, and exponential growth  of technology & social media, institutions need to keep their exhibitions fresh, their work relevant, and take bold steps to keep up with the times.  To address this statewide need, NYSCA and GHHN have created the Creativity Incubator, a 2-year pilot partnership program which invites staff in museums to test out experimental interpretive approaches.  We visited the Hudson Valley, Long Island and the Mohawk Valley in 2017.

Now we're heading to Western NY! The next NYSCA/GHHN Creativity Incubator workshop will be held on  Tuesday, May 1, 2018  at one of these 7 sites*!
  • Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, North Tonawanda
  • Roger Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, Jamestown
  • The Cobblestone Society & Museum, Albion
  • Geneva Historical Society, Geneva
  • Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, Buffalo
  • Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester
  • Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University, St. Bonaventure

Tell your colleagues, family, and friends they can help to choose the winning site!    Voting and workshop registration will open on our website  www.greaterhudson.org  on  Monday, March 19th!

Dawn Elliott is the 2018 Martha Washington Woman of History!
Historic interpreter, reenactor, preservationist, educator and researcher Dawn Elliott is this year's recipient of the Martha Washington Woman of History Award. This
award is given by Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site each year to a woman who has made a contribution to the history of the Hudson Valley through education, promotion, or preservation.
Ms. Elliott, of New Paltz, is Site Manager at Locust Lawn Museum, where she introduced the "Ancients Alive" event, and is also involved with interpretation at the Locust Grove Historic Estate. Ms. Elliott began volunteering at Historic Huguenot Street at the age of fourteen. This led to a position of interpreter at that location, where she created Historic Huguenot Street's Haunted Huguenot Street Halloween program. She has been associated with that location ever since. Ms. Elliott was later employed at Senate House in the same capacity of historic interpreter prior to going to Locust Lawn Estate. She is also employed at Museum Village, where her involvement extends to providing essential collections care services, designing and installing exhibits, managing a volunteer program and organizing and interpreting at their special events. She is a volunteer, interpreter and creator of programs, presentations and interpretive characterizations at historic sites up and down the Hudson River Valley. Her characterizations are extensive, representing the 17th century to the 20th century. She is a member of the Town of New Paltz Historic Preservation Commission and the founder of Scions of Patria, an organization that interprets Dutch colonial domestic life. Along with doing this, Ms. Elliott also works to promote historic preservation by trying to save endangered buildings and archaeological sites like the Revolutionary War Fishkill Supply Depot.

The award presentation will take place on March 18, 2018, at Washington's Headquarters State Historic Site during the Women's History Month program, "The General's Lady". The public is welcome to attend the program, starting at 2:00 PM. For further details or directions, call  845-562-1195.
Congratulations, Dawn!
