April 15, 2018: Goddess: When She Rules
Julie Prentice
It has happened throughout history that there were female deities (Goddesses) who were worshipped in many different cultures and religions as the dominant deities of the time. Whatever their names, it was true that they were Mother Goddesses who held equal or higher place than male deities of that era. As time passed, male Gods became dominant in many religions and cultures. Today, Goddess worship is increasing around the world. Is this a time when Goddesses can "rule" and what would that mean? How has this worship changed over time and what does it mean for Unitarian Universalists today?
A Unitarian Universalist for twenty years, Julie has been writing poetry for most of her life. From the East Coast originally, she now lives in California with her soulmate and their furry companion. After careers as an ASL interpreter and preschool teacher, she is currently working as a passionate Peer Supporter of persons with mental health challenges. In her spare time, she's a writer, knitter, crafter, and singer. Her work has also been published in several poetry anthologies and online journals and blogs. She is the current Worship Chair at UUCM.

Interim Minister's Column Words of Joy
|
|
 |
|
We were delighted to welcome two new members to our congregation at our new member ceremony on Sunday. Here are their brief bios:
Kristin Zibell
Kristin is a resident of Larkspur, who is originally from Wisconsin. She's joining UUCM for the faith community and focus on social justice. A lifelong spiritual seeker, she's curious about all spiritual traditions and travels the world to learn more about them.
Jeanine Schiebold
Jeanine is a longtime resident of Novato. She has 2 great adult children, a wonderful husband and an adoring dog. Her hobbies are gardening, hiking, swimming, reading, singing and going to Antique shows and flea markets. The family came home with the dog the last time they were at the flea market. Jeanine speculates: "Maybe that's why she adores us!"
Both of these members, and so many of our new members, have jumped right into activities at UUCM, even before they officially joined us! If you have been active, or are interested in becoming involved at UUCM, and have been thinking of taking the next step into membership, please speak with me (510 821-2394), minister@uumarin.org, or with our Membership Committee Chair, Thomas Ervin. We would love to welcome you!

Pictures and Broccoli:
I saw lots of photos being taken on Easter/Passover/April Fool's Day. If you got even a decent snapshot, can you please send it to me? We might want to post it. We need more photos of the kids in action. [Did any of your
kids
comment on the broccoli treats in some of the plastic eggs? I saw one kid look in disgust at it and put it on the ground. Another said, "Oh, broccoli. I like broccoli."
Still not too late to register for the UUCM Retreat! We have room for you and your family. If you have a 13-year-old or older youth who wants to come but would need to come w/o the rest of the family because of other parental commitments, we can arrange for an adult sponsor for the weekend.
Wrapping things up. We are getting close to the end of the RE year. Please note that the last day of RE this year is June 10th. The last day with teachers in the classroom is May 27th. This day will be practice for RE Sunday on June 3rd.
Please plan to have you child attend both 5/27 and 6/3.
This is important for the summary of the year and community relationships.
Fair Trade chocolate and now coffee too! We have ordered more chocolate from
Equal Exchange
and six bags of fair trade coffee too. (Nani has dibs on one of them already) Cash and check only. 20% of Equal Exchange profits go to the
UU Service Committee.

UUCM Readers' Theater invites members and friends to join our fun-loving group. We meet twice a month, on the second and fourth Monday of each month, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at UUCM. Most of the time, we read short plays aloud when we meet, but every 6-8 weeks we rehearse and then present short prose or poems during a service. No memorizing required, but you should be willing to ham it up and be silly. Information: Jan Seagrave (

REMARKABLE People Again... April 20 7 pm
|
|
 |
|
The ongoing Remarkable People series gives us time to learn about each other from the interesting stories of individual lives. Whether you already know them by name or not, you will learn what you don't know in the evening of sharing and community. Each person talks and there is time for questions and general sociability and usually some sustaining snacks.
You may know Lynne Scarpa from her work on the Board and leadership in the search for an incoming Developmental Minister. But you might be less familiar with her legacy as a third generation Californian. She also knows more than any of us about what communities can and should do about stormwater.
Michael Jenkins has also served on the Board in the past. You could know he is an exercise expert with three gyms across Marin County. But you can come learn more about what and where is Lackawanna, New York, and then be able to ask this question: Why was Michael on TV at the age of 4?
Come hear from these good UUCM folk who have lived experiences of how to stay fit and keep our communities safe in the face of climate change.
Be remarkable yourself and come enjoy!
And coming up next month:
May 18: Christine Davenport and Amanda Morando
