Senior Spotlight : Abe Martin
An Article by Teacher Liz Richardson

Abe Martin is the last of the Martin's to graduate from Sanborn. His older sisters made their marks, but Abe decided to lay low at SRHS while he excelled at SST. As a sophomore, he knew he was interested in working on cars since he always loved getting elbow deep in a project, so he applied for and was accepted into the Auto Technology program at SST.

Hey Abe, how was high school? "It's been real." He also voiced that high school was challenging sometimes, but not an obstacle that he couldn't overcome. I had the privilege of teaching Abe in Biology and Forensics.  In class, Abe has a great sense of humor and is willing to do what is needed to get the work done. I still have his drawing of a rabid raccoon hanging on my classroom wall!

In his free time, Abe enjoys working on cars and hanging out with his friends. He played football all four years of high school and liked being on defense the most. "It's fun to crash into people. It was a good way to get that aggressive energy out." His positions on the team included being an outside linebacker and a guard.

Abe wants to start his post-secondary education at a community college in New Hampshire. He recently decided to attend Manchester Community College and plans to major in Automotive Technologies. I know that Abe will succeed because this is a field that he loves and a career working on cars would be his dream come true.
Senior Spotlight : Alex Felisberto
An Article by Mark Giuliucci
Alex Felisberto says he is going to live forever. Given all the goals he's set for himself once he leaves Sanborn, he may need to.

"I have a lot of aspirations," Alex says, smiling. "It's going to take some time."
For the past four years, Alex has sampled a wide variety of what Sanborn has to offer. He's played on the school golf team. He was a member of Key Club, and played alto saxophone in the band.
The most influential activity for him, however, has been the drama program. "It has been the catalyst for all the changes in my life," Alex says. "It has brought me a wide circle of friends. While we may have similar interests and outlooks, we're not all the same -- and I really appreciate that. It's taught me how to be a better human being."
Teacher Evan Czyzowski, who directs Sanborn's drama program, says Alex has been vital to the school's productions over the years. "Alex has been a steadfast member of Sanborn's Theater Troupe since his freshman year, and he has continuously played major roles in both comedies and tragedies," Mr. Czyzowski says. "He has wonderful stage-presence as an actor, and he is always committed helping make our shows first-rate. The diversity of the characters he has played on stage is a testament to his own well-rounded persona. In the classroom, Alex has a sharp intellect that enable him to have in-depth conversations on a wide variety of subjects. Alex has a bright future ahead of him."
Alex has decided to attend Wheaton College in Norton, MA, this fall. He says he picked Wheaton in part because it offers "incredible" travel and study-abroad programs. The king of Bhutan, for instance, is a Wheaton alum, and offers unique experiences for students who travel there. Alex says Wheaton also has "a great vibe" for arts -- including music and theater -- and offers solid academics in line with his interests.
After college, Alex says, it's time to start changing the world. "I want to work in politics without being a politician," he says. "I don't think being a politician is the most effective way to get things done. I want to try to make the United States and the world a better place without having to deal with all the nonsense."
To Alex, this means being a policy maker -- and it also means starting early. "Young people are systematically disenfranchised," he says. "Just because we're young doesn't mean we don't have good ideas. Young voices need to be heard." Toward this end, he has been a member of the Youth & Government program in New Hampshire. He points to key issues such as lobbying, campaign finance reform, and changing the voting system as ways to improve the state of politics in America. Alex says he's also like to live abroad for a while, probably in Germany. He said he considers it to be the "current seat of Western Democracy."
Alex also would like to be a writer. He says he has would like to try both fiction and non-fiction, and says he would like his writing to focus on philosophical issues. In addition, he wants to be a camp director. Having worked as a counselor in training at Camp Lincoln, he says he's attracted to the idea of shaping young lives and helping children develop a sense of purpose.

For the record, Alex really is serious about living forever. "I truly do want to -- and I think that we're right on the precipice of making this happen from a scientific standpoint," he says. "There should always be a way to overcome what seems inevitable."
In the end, a long, happy, challenging, and meaningful life is what Alex says he wants most. "I don't want to have to say no to something because there's no time to do it," he says. "I don't want to rush, and I don't want to slave away at something I can't stand just so I can make a living. I am looking forward to getting out there and doing big things."
Senior Spotlight : Devon Busch
An Article by Amanda Feeney
I have had the pleasure of getting to know Devon over the past four years, and watching him grow as a student and young adult. When I think of Devon words like funny, caring, perseverance, and growth are the first to come to mind. Devon's teachers Ms. G and Mrs. Bradley describe him as someone who is always polite with a great sense of dry humor.
English Teacher Lauren Petraitis had this to add: "I 've had Devon since sophomore year. I really admire his creativity and humor! Despite his tough exterior, Devon is incredibly compassionate. I'm so proud of how far he has come since starting here!"
Although Devon is not completely sure where he will end up just yet, he is excited to join the workforce and do something involving manual labor. He is currently exploring some career options with local manufacturing companies and hopes to start working full-time this summer. I am so proud of all Devon has accomplished and am excited to see where this next step takes him!
Senior Spotlight : Lizzie Burt
An Article by Mark Giuliucci
When Lizzie Burt leaves high school this June, it will only be for a while. She'll be back in the classroom soon -- this time as a teacher.
"I really want to teach English," Lizzie says. "I have known that this is what I want to do for a very long time."
Lizzie has been an active and enthusiastic member of the Sanborn community during her four years here. She says her favorite memories will always revolve around cheerleading. A four-season captain of the cheer squad, Lizzie says that practices and events bring her a great sense of accomplishment and enjoyment. "There's nothing quite like throwing people around," she says, laughing. "It's very energizing."
Cheer provides constant challenges to Lizzie. She says that learning to tumble was particularly satisfying, since it requires discipline, physical ability, and attention to detail. Lizzie also says that being a cheer captain taught her a lot about what it means to be a leader. "I don't think I always did a great job at that, but I learned," she says. "I think if you look back and don't see anything you could do better, you're being naive."
In the classroom, Lizzie takes every English class she can fit in her schedule. She is enrolled in  Advanced Placement English, and also studies poetry in an Extended Learning Opportunity (ELO) class. "Poetry has always been a favorite," she says. "I love the way words have different meanings for different people. I love the word play, I love figuring it out." Lizzie counts Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, and Edgar Allen Poe as her most admired poets. "Poe is so different," she says, smiling. It's a big contrast to all the uplifting stuff."
Teacher Aaron Cass, who is Lizzie's ELO advisor, marvels at her growth as a person. "She has grown tremendously  over the years, into a self-reflective participant in the world," Mr. Cass says. "She is so engaged, so determined, and she is not afraid of anything."
This fall, Lizzie will enroll at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. She says she is excited to start the next phase of her academic life. She also is happy that the campus is so close to the ocean. "It's a great place to go and be centered," she says. "My family loves going to the beach, and out in our boat, any time of the year."
Lizzie says she has started work on a novel centered on the experiences of a reluctant German soldier during World War II. While writing a book is a huge challenge, Lizzie says that she will show the same determination that she has used to overcome the challenges life has presented.
When she returns to the high school classroom, Lizzie says she will remember the lessons she learned from her favorite teachers. "I always want students to know that I am there for them," she says. "I like English, I like being around others who like English. I want to show passion about it, just like the teachers I admire the most."
Senior Spotlight : Madison McElroy
An Article by Dianne McCarthy

Madison is a student who will tell you her most difficult classes are math and science yet thoroughly enjoys and immerses herself in a course such as Anatomy and Physiology and Chemistry, both science electives she chose to take, as she just loves learning about a variety of things. Her desire to continuously challenge herself by taking courses outside of her comfort zone is a sign of her dedication to improving her skills and reaching her goals.

As a runner for our track teams who enjoys physical exertion, Madison also has worked many hours weekly at a large retail store to support her activities financially. She is also a primary member in our Key Club, working to help others. With her extracurricular activities being impressive, her true love is when she is on stage performing. She finds herself at home when she is able to immerse herself in another character, driving herself to portray that character to the best of her abilities, all the while finding her escape from reality. She is an impressive person to watch behind the scenes and on the stage as she has learned every aspect of the theater from stage work to costumes to improvisation to performing. Her dream is to become an actor and, given her perseverance and dedication to accomplishing her goals, we believe she will find success.

Madison will be enjoying the warm weather as she makes a major move to Hawaii this summer to attend college and begin learning more about the professional aspect of becoming an actor. We are so excited (and more than a little envious) for her as she makes such an amazing move from the mountains and snow to the palm trees and never-ending warmth!

Senior Spotlight : Noah Marsh
An Article by Denise Alenskis

During his four years at Sanborn, Noah's accomplishments are impressive!

Noah has been involved in a number of clubs and activities. He has been a member of the Chess Club and the Bowling Team for four years and a member of the Card Club for two years (Grades 11 & 12). In addition, Noah has enjoyed taking piano lesson since grade seven!

Commendations from teachers include:

Librarian Mark Giuliucci, "Noah is an outstanding chess player and is quickly becoming an accomplished photographer. Both of these skills take practice, perseverance, and a willingness to work hard to improve -- which explains Noah to a T."

English teacher Aaron Cass, "He's a lovely kid and an excellent bowler."

Spanish teacher Colin McQueen, "A fearless competitor who has established himself as a legend among the bowling community. Additionally, he brings that same commitment to excellence into the classroom."

Math and Science teacher Dorette Migliori, "Noah enjoys weather so much that he actually has a weather station at home that he collects data with his dad daily."

Athletic Director Vicki Parady-Guay,  "Noah is a great young man who has a passion for Bowling. He has single handily brought the Bowling Team at the high school to the level they are now. Not just in skill level, he has also brought a strong interest to the sport. He is an advocate of the sport in school. Many of the teachers have grown to be roadies to the team."

While completing his four years at Sanborn, Noah was enrolled in courses such as Chemistry, Honors Physics, Honors Biology and Honors Geometry as well as current courses such as AP Calculus and Honors Spanish III. All of this course work has contributed to Noah's membership as a NH Scholar with a STEM emphasis.

Math and Science teacher Tim Young shared, "I've known Noah for a few years now, and he is a great student to talk with because he is interested in many topics, besides Physics and Calculus. A curiosity like his is what will drive him to solve tomorrow's problems on our planet."

English teacher and Bowling Coach Katie Graham added, "Noah is a passionate, focused, and dedicated human being. On the bowling team, he showed strong leadership, technical awareness, and skill. In the classroom, Noah is always curious to know more and will debate with respect and knowledge. It's hard to believe 4 years go by so quickly, but I know he'll do an amazing job in college and continue to chase his passions."

Wellness teacher Joshua White also noted, "Noah is a pleasure to be around. He constantly challenges himself, which is one of many reasons he excels in a variety of activities. During Noah's bowling career, he has won the first place "Flight Metal" both, Sophomore and Junior year. During his senior season, Noah challenged himself in the "Championship flight", where he proved to be a very dominant bowler. Being Noah's advisory teacher, I have seen how excited Noah is for life after High school, and getting to know Noah on a personal level, I know he will accomplish Great things in the future."
Noah aspires to be a meteorologist and has been accepted to both the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Plymouth State University for their meteorology programs....he hasn't made his choice yet. Noah does not want to be the weather anchor on television, instead he would like to study and forecast the weather for the anchors. He is hoping to complete an internship in college, to get an "inside" look at the profession.

Good Luck Noah!
Senior Spotlight : Max Higginbottom
An Article by Angelica Mahoney

Max has a quiet demeanor and pleasant smile which can warm and brighten any room.  He is a student that takes his work effort seriously, submitting quality products routinely. Having had the privilege of having Max in two different classes, I have been most impressed with his personal determination and grit.  Max has had to rise above personal obstacles which have made his high school journey more challenging than that of the average student.

English teacher Nicole St.Jean, described Max as caring, thoughtful and respectful.  Those who know Max well know that he is an easy person to talk to about anything. He has a genuine concern toward his work, his teachers, and those close to him.   I have thoroughly enjoyed having Max as a student over the last few years. Max has been accepted to Great Bay Community College in Portsmouth, where he will be pursuing a degree in Psychology.

Senior Spotlight : Paige DesRosiers
An Article by Dona Harvey-Moseley

Paige is a student I have had in class twice, once when she was a Sophomore and again since August in Psychology class as a Senior. I have very much enjoyed watching her evolve into the young woman she has become. She is and always has been a very personable and sweet person who is respectful to both her peers and the adults she interacts with during the course of the day. Paige is always willing to be of assistance and help people in need while making sure to do her share and contribute as much as possible. She is truly dedicated to her education and can put a lot of pressure on herself to do well even under challenging circumstances.
During the last few years, in addition to her academic pursuits, Paige has also represented her school on the athletics field and represents the student body in a variety of clubs and activities that serve to improve the school and community at large. She has demonstrated that she values the school climate here at Sanborn and tries to play in important part in making Sanborn a positive place for everyone here. Paige has chosen to be an active member of the school community and works hard to be a strong voice in the classroom and on the field as well as a representative of the best Sanbon Pride has to offer.
Paige is also among the most goal oriented and disciplined students I currently have in class. She is determined to meet and exceed any expectations that teachers set and works hard to to be a responsible student. Business teacher, Jeff Adams describes Paige and fun to have in class and someone who always gets her work done. That said, the expectations and goals that Paige has set for herself far exceed those placed on her by others.
Paige also has a number of qualities that will serve her well as she pursues her degree in Psychiatry. She is caring and compassionate but at the same time level headed. She genuinely wants to help people live their best lives and has an aptitude for putting people at ease when they are in distress. Finally, Paige is driven to be the best person she can be and I have no doubt that she will be successful in whatever she chooses.

Senior Spotlight : Conor Jackson
An Article by Caitlin Golino

When you see Conor in the hallways here at Sanborn, you are always sure to receive a greeting and a big smile. Conor is a friendly, personable, and hardworking student that is sure to make an impact in the world outside of Sanborn.

I have seen Conor progress as a student these past three years. At first, as a sophomore, Conor was a timid learner. However, I saw him become a leader in the classroom that many other students looked to for help and support. Conor was always willing to ask and answer questions in class, and he drove many of the class discussions that we had in Biology. He has a genuine curiosity for science and the natural world that I am sure he will share with others.

Conor plans on attending Paul Smith's College in the Adirondacks where he will study recreation and environmental studies. Over his summer vacations, I know he has completed outdoor education programs that have required him to hike and camp in the wilderness for long periods of time. During these expeditions, he developed independent life skills such as leading a group of peers, being prepared, building fires, and setting up and breaking down camp. It has also built his teambuilding and communication skills. His willingness to work with others will allow him to succeed in the future.

His English teacher Mrs. Graham says "he's a super kind person who is motivated to do the right thing and to get the job done. He's passionate about the environment and will probably help make some positive change for the world we live in."

Conor's enthusiastic personality and bright smile will be missed when he leaves Sanborn. I look forward to watching as he takes steps towards a bright future! Congratulations Conor and the Class of 2018!

Senior Spotlight : Eliza Johnson
An Article by Caitlin Golino

Imagine the worst weather day you can in March. The March "in like a Lion" saying comes to mind: gray, dark, sleeting, and freezing temperatures. It was one of those days I would rather be curled up on the couch drinking hot cocoa. When I walked out to my car at the end of the day, there was Eliza running in the sleet. It, honestly, could have been a Nike commercial for motivation. This is the perfect example of Eliza's unflappable and determined personality.

I've had the pleasure of knowing Eliza since her sophomore year when she was in my Biology class. Last year she was in my Environmental Science class and this year she is taking Marine Biology with me as an independent study. I'm so thankful that I have been able to get to know Eliza while I have worked here. She reminds me every day that students can be kind, caring, genuine, hard working and motivated. Since her sophomore year, I have seen her transform from a shy, timid individual to a confident and outgoing young woman. She does so much for herself and others within the Sanborn community. I remember when she was applying for NHS. She was worried that she wasn't doing enough and she showed me her application which was an extensive list of all her achievements. The one thing I think she was most worried about was her leadership. She was unsure others viewed her as a leader. What Eliza didn't realize is that she is a leader by example: the student that others should model their behavior from and the student that works silently and is on task. Eliza is also a leader outside of the classroom. She has been on the cross country team for the past three years and was a captain this year.

I have seen Eliza grow into a leader in and out the classroom. She is personable and has great communication skills. I have enjoyed seeing her become a more outgoing and confident young woman. I wish her all the best as she heads to UNH to study physical therapy and exercise science. She will be greatly missed!

Senior Spotlight : Steve Costa
An Article by Lauren Petraitis

One can often find Stephen Costa talking with great enthusiasm about either cars or his newest building projects. Ever since I had him as a sophomore, I noticed that when Stephen was interested in something, he committed himself to it wholeheartedly. If he did not know enough about something, he made certain that he researched it until he had the expertise to talk about it in an educated way.

It was last year that I discovered Stephen's work ethic and curiosity around topics of interest were some of his strongest qualities. Once he joined SST, it gave him an outlet for all of his curiosity and energy. He began personalizing assignments for himself, particularly with writing his final paper about his experience rebuilding a Small Block Chevy 350 with his dad. He carried this into his senior year, he wrote his college essay about his project building a drone to someday create a green delivery system that is more efficient than other companies. In both of these assignments, I noticed that he had a particular focus on fine details in all of his hands-on projects. Stephen's passion for these topics drive his explanations, to the point where he needs to slow his talking in order to articulate everything in a way that makes sense to others. It is fascinating to hear him describe his ideas!

Teacher Rand Duffy spoke fondly about Stephen's drive and creativity:
"The first time Steve asked me a question about his Camaro IROC I knew he was talented in many hands-on projects. He removed the transmission from his Camaro and repaired it himself.. Then he took out the motor and completely rebuilt it. He is also a professional woodworker as he has shown me pictures of his projects.Whatever field he chooses he will do well at. I can't believe I haven't had him in class!"

Stephen will be attending Middlesex Community College for two years, then transfer to a four-year college afterwards where he will pursue a degree in Mechanical Engineering. I can't wait to see what he accomplishes in college and thereafter. There is no doubt in my mind that the sky is the limit for him! I wish him the best of luck in all that he does.

Three Sanborn Seniors Receive Math & Science Award
An Update by Teachers Meghan Petruzzi and Dr. Tim Young

Darcie Bays, of the Southern NH section of The Society of Women Engineers (SWE), presented awards to three senior young ladies who have demonstrated the highest achievements in science and mathematics while at SRHS. Award recipients must have completed at least three years of science and mathematics with distinction and must also be active citizens of their school and community. SWE hopes to encourage young women to continue their STEM studies and possibly enter the engineering profession.

Meghan Hamel, Eliza Johnson, and Maggie Rasmussen were all surprised by the awards, since their math and science teachers nominated them without their knowledge! Congratulations as you pursue Mechanical Engineering, Exercise Science, and Computer Science, respectively, in college!

End of Year Plans - Last Days of School For Grades 9-11
June 18-19 Will Be For Competency Recovery

Dear Parents/Guardians of Sanborn Regional High School Grade 9-11 Students,
In order to provide students with every possible opportunity to obtain full credit for all classes, we are offering a modified class schedule on the last two days of school, June 18 and 19. On these days, we will run 90 minute extended Focused Learning Time (FLT) periods.

FLT is typically offered as part of our regular schedule each day for 40 minutes and provides an opportunity for students to engage in personalized intervention, extension, and enrichment. During these end-of-year extended FLT periods, teachers will be available to work with students on projects for competency recovery.  Students who will not pass a course will have the opportunity to meet with their guidance counselor to complete a credit check, re-evaluate their course selections for the 2018-19 school year and to initiate the process for credit recovery.

Please understand that attendance at these extended FLT sessions is mandatory for all students not passing a competency or who have not finished any required work in one or more of their courses. These sessions will provide students with the opportunity for teacher supported competency recovery that will not be available over the summer.  If students are not able to make up the competency/credit at the end of the year, they will likely have to repeat the class next school year.

Students who are passing all of their competencies and who have completed all required work for their classes   will not be required to attend these extended focused learning opportunities. Please be aware, however, that bus transportation will only be available at the end of the regular school day at 2:10 PM. Please also note that the last regular day of school for grades 9-11 will be Friday June 15, with dismissal at 12:00PM.
Your child will be notified by their teacher(s) by Friday, June 15 at the latest if they will be required to stay for any and all of the extended FLT sessions. For questions about your child's grades, please contact your child's teacher(s) at (603) 642-3341.

The schedule for the days at the end of the year will be as follows:

Technology Device Collection
All students will be permitted to take their school-issued technology devices (chromebooks/laptops) home for the summer. These devices have been checked out by students through our school library system. Before the end of the year, all students will need to renew the check-out of their device with the school library. If students do not complete this task before the last day of school then the school will assume that the device has been lost or damaged and will pursue payment of the replacement cost for the device.
Please contact the office at (603) 642-3341 if you have any questions about this plan.

Do You Have Unwanted Clothing?
Please Use Our Planet Aid Donation Boxes, Located in the Staff Parking Lot

When you drop your unwanted clothing off in these bins, the SRHS PTO gets paid based on the weight of the clothing! This is a really easy way to help our school. All PTO proceeds go directly back to programming and scholarships that directly benefit our students.

Did you know? From April of 2015 - May 2017, this fundraiser has helped us raise nearly $2400.00 for the PTO. Help us double that number by sharing this opportunity with your friends, your family, and your neighbors!
