TZAV

This week's Sidra is a continuation of the Laws of the Sacrifices.

The Priests were commanded to keep a fire burning continuously on the altar. The sacrifices from which the Priests were permitted to eat are then enumerated. Their permission was qualified, however: the Priests had to be in a state of ritual purity, and the Priestly portions often had to be consumed within certain boundaries and time frames.

Aaron, the High Priest, was to bring a meal offering both morning and evening on behalf of all the Kohanim.

Over a seven-day period Aaron and his sons were consecrated to their positions by Moses. Moses robed Aaron in the High Priest's garments and anointed his head with oil. The other Priests were also dressed and anointed, and special sacrificial offerings concluded the ceremony.

Tonight's services are at 7:00 p.m.
Tomorrow morning's service is at 9:30 a.m. ...
...and during the service, we will finally get around to the twice-postponed practicum on
  • how to do an aliyah to the Torah
  • how to do hagbaha (lifting the Torah)
  • how to do gelila (wrapping the Torah)
  • how to carry the Torah
We will also be celebrating Marilyn Saposh's 90th birthday (today!) with a very special kiddush for a very special lady

Tomorrow afternoon's Minha service will begin at 6:45 p.m.
During the Seudah Shlishit we will be reading Ronald Lauder's op Ed that appeared earlier this week in the New York Times:
"Israel's Self-Inflicted Wounds"

SELL YOUR HAMETZ
The deadline has passed... but you can still sell your hametz (as long as I get your form by the end of Friday morning's 7:00 a.m. service.

Why do I set the deadline more than a week in advance?                  So that I have enough time to deposit your checks to turn around an issue checks to deserving individuals and organizations who need to have these monies in advance of Passover. The later I get funds to them, the less useful it is to them.

You're Invited

In celebration of Zachary's marriage to Rinat Glinert last Sunday, my family is sponsoring the kiddush following services on the first morning of Passover.

I know... I know...: Who in their right mind, other than the hearty band of shul-goers, wants to get up, let alone come to services after the first Seder?

But we have no choice as Rinat and Zachary are only with us for the first two days of Yom Tov, and the second day is Easter (when the Sanctuary and Social Hall will not be available to us).

Please join us! (And I sure do hope that the newlyweds will get up in time to have a joint Aliyah to the Torah).

New Start Time for Friday Night Services: 6:30p.m.
At its January meeting, the Ritual Committee decided to experiment, for three months, with an earlier time for our Friday evening, couple at Shabbat services. The proposal was brought to our Board of Trustees in late February, and hearing no objection, the trial run will be implemented beginning on Friday night, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. and will run through the end of June, when it will be reevaluated.
On those evenings when the synagogue hosts a Shabbat dinner, the dinner will begin at 6:00 p.m., but the service that follows will begin at 7:15p.m.
Please let Richard Schiff, chairman of the Ritual Committee, or Rabbi Stern know what you think of the time change.

Breaking News
"It Happened at Midnight" (Do you get the Pesach reference? kas)
As part of its Omnibus Appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2018, Congress passed many critical initiatives that will bolster Israel's security, including:
*$3.1 billion for U.S. security assistance to Israel, to help our ally defend herself and protect her citizens.
*$705.8 million for missile defense programs, representing $105 million more than last year's funding level.
*$47.5 million for joint anti-tunneling technologies, a $5 million increase from last year.
The bill was also the vehicle for Congress to pass the Taylor Force Act, critical legislation that cuts funding to the Palestinian Authority if it continues paying terrorists or their families.
Today's omnibus bill also includes several new funding programs for strategic cooperation, including for the establishment of a U.S.-Israel Center of Excellence in energy and water technologies.

Tribute to Natan Sharansky
It's no exaggeration to say that Natan Sharansky is a genius. He has a critical, synthetic mind and there's a lot of courage and fortitude packed into his diminutive physical stature. He perceives problems and needs and sets about providing solutions, whether it's for the integration of his fellow Soviet émigrés into Israeli society or to support Jewish college students on US campuses.
We even got a brief exposure to him at AIPAC (everything happens at AIPAC!) when he was interviewed by his daughter before 18,000 attendees.
If you have not read his autobiography, that may recommend it to you. Here is a man who kept his mind active while in Soviet jail, but playing chess games against himself - without a chessboard! Here is a man who found hope and courage in his jailers' words that were meant to increase his despair: "if you think some house wives in America protesting for you is going to free you, you are mistaken." But Sharansky took that statement is a hopeful sign: "if housewives in America know about me and are protesting in my behalf, then I will be released!"
Now Sharansky is about to retire as the head of the Jewish Agency, and in his honor. He is being awarded The Israel Prize (Israel's highest and most coveted prize). In this the 70th year of Israel's existence.

The "On the Road" that wasn't
I excitedly read about an exhibition that Prime Minister Netanyahu opened at the UN just a few days after the AIPAC Policy Conference concluded. It was sponsored by the Israeli Mission to the UN, and it traced the 3000+ year connection of the Jewish people to Jerusalem. The display included many artifacts from antiquity, including King Hezekiah's seal (715 B.C.E.-686 B.C.E.).
Were Netanyahu was asked about the irony of holding this exhibit at the UN, in whose General Assembly 125 nations had recently voted to deny any connection between the Jewish people in Jerusalem, the Prime Minister responded: "that's the UN; this exhibit deals in historical facts."
I so wanted to take our congregation there for our April "On the Road with the Rabbi."
Unfortunately, the exhibit closed within a few short days...
