Ever want to step away from the constant distractions of everyday life and spend a week with your fellow writers immersed in your craft and drawing inspiration from the literary community? Here's your chance.
This year, we'll host this annual gathering in beautiful Kerrville, Texas at Schreiner University. All of our events - classes, writing time, special presentations from guest speakers, and evening events - will take place on campus throughout the week. There will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to mix, mingle, and make new writing friends. All in one place!
Classes on fiction, nonfiction, and memoir are taught by some familiar names that I'm sure will please you: Charlotte Gullick, Donna M. Johnson & Kirk Wilson, Stacey Swann, and Michael Hall.
For a limited time, through May 9, registration is open only to current WLT members only. This early registration is for an all-inclusive retreat experience. After May 9, we'll open the retreat to everyone and offer registration for classes and housing separately, as space allows.
SPECIAL FREE EVENT
WLT's On the Craft of Writing
with Jennifer duBois

Friday, May 3, 2019
7:00 p.m.
Brazos Bookstore, Houston, TX

This event will include a craft talk with Jennifer in conversation with WLT Executive Director Becka Oliver about borrowing from real life in stories and novels.

"[Jennifer] duBois is a brilliant writer."-Karen Russell, author of Vampires in the Lemon Grove

The Book
Talk show host Matthew Miller has made his fame by shining a spotlight on the most unlikely and bizarre secrets of society, exposing them on live television in front of millions of gawking viewers. However, the man behind The Mattie M Show remains a mystery--both to his enormous audience and to those who work alongside him every day. But when the high school students responsible for a mass shooting are found to be devoted fans, Mattie is thrust into the glare of public scrutiny, seen as the wry, detached herald of a culture going downhill and going way too far. Soon, the secrets of Mattie's past as a brilliant young politician in a crime-ridden New York City begin to push their way to the surface.

With wit, heart, and crackling intelligence, The Spectators examines the human capacity for reinvention-and forces us to ask ourselves what we choose to look at, and why.
SPECIAL FREE EVENT
WLT's On the Business of Writing
with Kirby Kim

Thursday, May 9, 2019
7:00 p.m.
BookPeople, Third Floor, Austin, TX

A well-known literary agent at Jankow & Nesbit Associates, Kirby Kim represents both literary and commercial authors. When it comes to literary work, he's alternatively drawn to rich, sweeping stories that try to encompass a time or a place or tightly written, narratively innovative stories that bridge genres. His commercial interests include thriller, horror, speculative and science fiction, young adult, and middle grade. He also represents a range of nonfiction working with leaders and journalists in the areas of science, culture and current affairs. He's also known for representing memoir and pop culture, in particular music and comedy.

The Event
Kim will discuss the role a literary agent plays in the development of a writer's career, from book one to many subsequent books. He will be in conversation with WLT Executive Director Becka Oliver.

IN-PERSON CLASS
Adapting and Learning From Classic Literary Works
with Jess Hagemann

Saturday, May 4, 2019
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
St. Edward's University, Austin, TX

Public domain works are ripe for retelling: generally, they're 'classics' for a reason--but their language, characters, and specific scenarios might be outdated, unappealing to today's reader. Similarly, real events from history stand to teach us a lot even now, but if their 'lessons' are shrouded in unrelatable politics or cultural norms, current generations won't recognize themselves in it. In this class, learn to save the best bits of a classic story or significant historical moment, while ushering its style into 2019. Participants will take a n in-depth look at how a few contemporary authors have repurposed 'old' stories and learn ways to incorporate research, pop culture, and current events into their writing.

Even if you're not necessarily wanting to write an adaptation, this class will provide a different look at the elements of great storytelling that make the "classics" as successful as they are.
IN-PERSON CLASS
Creating Buzz for Your Book
with Isobella Jade

Saturday, May 11, 2019
10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
St. Edward's University, Austin, TX

Building your public relations platform begins before and continues after a book is published. This class will help writers in all genres learn strategies for getting features in national magazines and media sources. After spending fifteen years in Manhattan and gaining features on her books and publishing projects in national magazines and newspapers and television, Isobella Jade also brings a strong DIY mantra about how far your reach can go. With the right angle, writers can get themselves and their book topic featured in major news sources in Texas and beyond.
Participants will be able to send the instructor their media pitch ahead of time for the possibility of using them as case studies.
