A Letter from the Director...
Recently I purchased the Amazon device, Alexa, for my baby boomer parents. My parents are not technically savvy, so my intention was for them to enjoy music on-demand via Alexa. Initially, they were very skeptical and didn't plug the device in for weeks. When they started to use Alexa they were blown away. Soon my mom was no longer satisfied requesting Alexa to play Stranger on the Shore. She started asking Alexa things like, "Alexa how old is Clint Eastwood?" It was at that point that I realized I bought my mom a reference librarian. I could only think, wait I have a Master's Degree in Library Science and Alexa does not. "Her" [Alexa's] artificial intelligence is not qualified to do my line of work. The fact of the matter is that it was only a matter of time until my mom adopted Alexa as her friend. My mom is not alone, many people in modern society have friends like Alexa.
Obviously, Alexa and other similar devices directly impact library usage. Libraries around the world are working harder to compete with the Alexas of the world to offer unique user library experiences. Many libraries are strategically balancing the nostalgic essence of the library while developing bolder messaging and branding to inform modern users of their value. The Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity is faced with this balancing act in the way our materials are displayed, the material formats we offer, and how we attract the community to use our facilities. There are many wonderful services and programs being offered this month at our library. Alexa is great for quick answers, but when it comes to a personal touch and people who care, head to the library!

Sarah Ellis,
Outreach & Fundraising Coordinator
Sarah joined the library as the Outreach & Fundraising Coordinator in January 2018; previously, she was Director of Nazareth's Love-A-Lot Nursery School and held numerous technical writing and editing jobs.
Sarah enjoys reading, and her favorite book is
To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee (she is avoiding the sequel, but encourages everyone to see TKAM on Broadway). Unlike her colleagues in previous newsletter Spotlight columns, she has little desire to hike the great outdoors in her spare time, instead opting for a glass of wine, a good book, and a view of the ocean whenever possible. She moderates MLNV's The Reel Book Club, and is also an active participant in a book club with friends that includes two of her three previously stated favorite activities.
Moving to Nazareth in 2002, Sarah discovered the library immediately and brought her daughters to story times led by Catherine Stewart. "Introducing books to children early and often is crucial to later academic and social success. It's not just the vocabulary, it's the fine motor skill of turning the pages, sitting still long enough to listen to a story, learning how to predict outcomes and being engaged in a world that broadens the imagination." Wanting to meet people and get involved in the community, Sarah joined the Friends of the Library; as a current member, she attends the quarterly meetings and helps with the semi-annual book sales.
As for library offerings, "I wish more residents would see the library as more than a building of books, because that's such an antiquated view. We offer cutting-edge technology, free DVD and video game rentals, free access to ancestry.com and so many other databases and e-books, in addition to free on-site programs that educate, enlighten, and entertain, from health literacy to cooking to crafts to music and so much more."

The Memorial Library of Nazareth & Vicinity is creating a
Teen Summer Advisory Board (TSAB) to help plan teen programming. Our big projects this summer would include brainstorming ideas for fall events and renovating our YA/Teen room. We are looking for teens that have a love for our library and are interested in community engagement. TSAB will meet 6 times throughout summer: June 18, July 9 & 23, August 6, 20, & 22.
Perks of joining the Memorial Library of Nazareth and Vicinity's TSAB: snacks at meetings, receiving volunteer hours, and the ability to make creative and financial choices involving teen programming & the YA/Teen room renovations.
Requirements to join: Entering 7th to 12th grade, have an MLNV library card, be available for at least 5 of our 6 meetings, be willing to participate in TSAB discussions and voice your opinions, and be willing to respect the opinions, tastes, privacy & choices of others.

Strong Bones for a Lifetime!

Dr. Kathleen Morgan (a Rutgers University professor), this
educational program for individuals to learn more
about the prevention, management and treatment of osteoporosis.
This program will
educate individuals on how to prevent fractures and how to maintain or build stronger
bones. Individuals will learn about calcium and vitamin D, physical activity and falls
prevention. Current treatments for osteoporosis will also be discussed.
In the United States, 54 million people have osteoporosis and low bone mass;
placing 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men over the age of 50 at increased risk for
fracture.
Fractures often result in a decreased quality of life, limited mobility and the
potential need for nursing home care.
