Title I Information Night
Title I (pronounced “Title One”) is the largest federal aid program for elementary, middle, and high schools. We are having an information night on Title I on May 8th at 7:00 p.m.

Through Title I, the Federal government provides funding to school districts around the country based on the number of low-income families in each district. Each district uses its Title I money for extra educational services for children who are behind in school. Schools where more than half of all students are low-income can operate a school-wide Title I project. This includes all Cortland schools.

Local districts, schools, and parents know best what their students need to succeed. Title I allows them to decide how to use Title I money to help students who are behind. In Cortland, Title I funds are being spent in these ways:
  • Reading specialists who help students to read and write;
  • Math specialists who help students with their numeracy;
  • A teacher who works with students for whom English is a new language;
  • Professional development and training for teachers; and
  • Literacy supplies and materials.

Title I money can also be used for different types of parent involvement activities, such as:
Family literacy activities;
  • Parent meeting, training activities, and; resource centers
  • Transportation and child care so parents can come to school activities or volunteer;
  • Materials that parents can use to work with their children at home.
Reminders From the Nurse
According to New York State Education Law and Public Health Law, every student attending school must be immunized.

All 5th Grade students entering 6th Grade, or when turning 11 years old, must show documentation of the Tdap vaccine before the start of the school year in September.

All 6th Grade students entering 7th Grade, must show documentation of the Meningococcal vaccine before the start of the school year.

New York State Law requires students be excluded from school without required immunizations. The school nurse will require documentation of the vaccine. Documentation may be sent in or faxed by the health care provider any time. The school nurse expects documentation be submitted prior to the start of school in September.

Documentation of the Tdap and Meningococcal vaccine means:
  • Written medical documentation of having received the Tdap vaccine from your healthcare provider or the health department. Health Care Provider’s signature and date is required.
  • Written medical documentation of having received the Meningococcal vaccine from your healthcare provider or the health department. Health Care Provider’s signature and date is required.

Spring Reminders!
Dress Code
As we move into warmer months, Randall School’s dress code is still in place and we expect children to wear clothing appropriate for school. Mesh tops, spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, overly large tank tops, flip-flops and short shorts are best left for weekends and vacations. Sandals are cool, but are not the best for recess or PE classes and may cause your child to be excluded from some recreational activities and recess due to safety concerns.

Early Mornings
With the warmer weather almost here, more and more children will be arriving at school very early. Please be reminded that our doors open at 8:00 for morning program and breakfast. There is no supervision prior to 8:00 for walkers who arrive before then.
Bike Safety
  • Wear a bicycle helmet on every ride. Check to see if your helmet has a safety certification.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing (pants, scarves) that could get caught in the chain or wheels.
  • Ride so drivers and other cyclists can see you (don’t weave in between parked cars).
  • Look both ways for oncoming vehicles before turning or crossing a street. Go only when it is clear.
  • Watch out for potholes, cracks, rocks, wet leaves, loose gravel, storm grates and railroad tracks.
  • Make sure your bike fits your height, weight and age.
  • Inflate tires properly.
  • Check brakes regularly.
  • Ride one behind another and WITH the flow of traffic.
  • Do not wear headphones or ear buds while riding.
  • Helmets: It is a New York State law for all bike riders and skaters under the age of 14 to wear certified helmets.
Walkers
Those students who walk to school and go to breakfast when they arrive in the morning should be sure to come early enough to finish their meal and make it to the classroom on time (by 8:30) each day. Also, please encourage your child/children to cross the street using the adult school crossing guards.

Bus Students
Parents of bus students are reminded that a written note is needed if they wish to give their child permission to leave school at the end of the day by some other means than riding the bus.
Yearbooks
Reminder that order forms (deposit of $5 or full payment of $10) can be sent in with your child. Order forms are also available in the office.
