On May 16, Emporia Public Schools recognized 33 retirees who have collectively worked for 566 ½ years for the district. We want to wish them all well in their retirement and thank them for all of the @EmporiaProud moments they created.

Important Reminders from Payroll
  • payments will be made June 30 for employees requesting lump sum checks
  • employees making Section 125 changes for the summer need to notify the Business Office by June 1, 2018
Preschool Enrollment
If you haven't enrolled your 3- or 4-year old for preschool through Emporia Public Schools, there is time to apply right now. Simply go online to www.usd253.org to print the application and return it to Maynard Early Childhood Center. You can also stop by Maynard at 19 Constitution to fill out an application from 9 am - 5 pm Monday - Friday. Call 341-2260 if you have questions.

Kindergarten Ramp Up
If you know of children who will be attending kindergarten this fall and they did not attend preschool, please encourage their parents to sign them up for Kindergarten Ramp Up. Kindergarten Ramp Up will be held July 16-20, at Riverside, William Allen White and Walnut. Two sessions will be offered: one session from 10:00 am - 11:45 am and a second session from  12:15 pm - 2:00 pm. To register, contact the student's school of attendance for fall 2018.

Moments

Students at Timmerman Elementary spent Wednesday outdoors having a camping day.  Teachers developed educational lessons based on camping concepts. This opportunity was made possible by the Hopkins Foundation grant received by instructional coach Stephanie Bosiljevac.

Board Recognitions
The Board recognized Riverside Elementary - 4th grade math and reading, William Allen White - 3rd grade math and Emporia Middle School - 6th grade math as Challenge Award Recipients. The awards recognize Kansas schools that are making a notable difference in student achievement despite facing significant challenges in their school population. Certificates of Merit will be presented to each school by the Kansas State Board of Education.

Board Approvals
  • approved the amendment to the 2017-18 budget which included the addition of the drivers education budget and changes to the food service budget
  • approved to accept the 2018 Migrant Summer Services Grant of $23,125
  • approved a memorandum of understanding with Emporia State University for participation in the Teachers College Special Education Fellows Program
  • approved the Professional Development Council (PDC) Handbook
  • approved the contract between USD 253 and HTK Architects for the facility needs assessment
  • approved the 2018-19 fee schedule, keeping fees the same as 2017-18
  • approved meal prices for 2018-19 which include a $0.05 increase for breakfast and $0.10 increase for lunch
  • approved the 2018-19 student handbooks  
Board Updates
  • The board received an update on the success of the AVID program at Emporia Middle School and Emporia High School. AVID has been a program in Emporia Public Schools since the spring of 2010. Faculty members gave an overview of AVID and how the program helps students be successful and meet their goals of reaching post secondary success. High school AVID participants shared their testimonials and what the AVID program has meant to them.
  • The board received an update on the elementary school redesign concept from Kevin Case, superintendent of schools. He and Vicki Schweinler, executive director of elementary education, have visited all 6 elementary schools Building Leadership Teams. Two schools - Logan Avenue and William Allen White/TPA have expressed an interest in being redesign schools.  Building Leadership Teams will begin meeting to develop a proposal on what the redesign will include.  The driving force behind the redesign will be the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA) and meeting the social emotional needs of students. The concept will be studied further over the summer and fall of 2018.
