An urgent alert from the US Section of the
Women's International League for Peace and Freedom

April 9, 2018

Dear WILPF US Members,

The US Section is poised to vote at the International Congress in Accra, Ghana in August and we previously wrote a dissent to the first draft to the Restructuring Plan proposed by International WILPF. We are not alone in our objections to what will surely be LESS of a voice for individual sections . However, International is preparing as if the new reorganization will be approved at Congress. It is, at best, confusing.

The new DRAFT proposal was mailed out to us on March 18th and responses are due no later than April 30. WILPF US is working on our response.

As noted, International is proceeding to prepare for a final vote on their PROPOSED Regional Representatives, as if this is a fait accompli. It is not.   But we must have a fallback plan in case our votes are not effective, and the new structure takes effect against our objections. [Here, it is also confusing, as the Constitution states that a decision such as this will not take effect until the next Congress.]

To that end, please note that in the attached documents, our International President Kozue Akibayashi, is reminding us of the rapidly approaching deadline (April 19th) for Sections to submit NOMINATIONS for the six new Regional Representatives (that would be limited to the regions, not for individual Sections, as they are now) as outlined in the restructuring plan... and the usual officers: President, Vice President and Treasurer. I am requesting you consider if you would like to nominate anyone from our section for these offices.

Please review the attachments to see if you, or a member you know, would make a good choice as this Regional Representative, or to compete for an International Board office.

Melissa Torres and I are in the process of sitting up an "Americas" Maestro conference on Friday (I hope) with the leaders of the Americas Sections. I will seek more clarification.

Thanks very much for your thoughtful consideration.

In solidarity,

MHH Signature

WILPF US Section President
