High Holy Days at USC Hillel USC Hillel welcomed in the Year 5779 with over 300 Jewish Trojans. Holiday programming at Hillel began on Sunday, September 9th with a community dinner, Kiddush, and students and community members lighting candels to start a joyful Erev Rosh Hashanah service.
Rosh Hashanah melodies spilled across University Ave over the next two days, as students continued to join USC Hillel throughout the holiday. On Friday, September 12th our Trojan family gathered together and took the metro to the beach for a Shabbat-by-the-Sea and Tashlikh service. USC Hillels building again reached maximum capacity during Yom Kippur, as Jewish Trojans joined us in asking for G-ds forgiveness and for atonement. Following Yom Kippur services on Saturday, USC Hillel transformed into a fast-friendly sanctuary, providing students with a space to nap, play board games, and refrain from technology. Community for all Jews This semester, USC Hillels inclusion initiative is strengthened by the founding of our new LGBTQ inclusion group! This community will explore and promote the intersectionality between Jewish spirituality and all sexualities and gender identities. Hillel will focus on follow-through after the trip with all campus-based participants, enabling and empowering them to continue examining their relationship to Israel and to the Jewish people both on campus and in their communities. The USC Hillel Girl Scout Troop returned for another great year of Girl Scouting. The troop, which is led by Hillel students, Rachel Kartin (2019), Valerie Lopez (2019), Julia Cherner (2020), CJ Wechsler (2020), Sara Okum (2021), Zoe Navapanich (2021), and Shelby Chickman (2022), is committed to empowering young girls growing up in South Central Los Angeles. The fifth grade troop meets every Monday for an hour and half with distinguished female professors on campus. Wechsler explains that the goal of the troop is to build the scouts excitement about higher education and grow their confidence. Be on the lookout for Girl Scout cookies come February!
