Holocaust Remembrance Day or Yom HaShoah (in Hebrew) is commemorated annually on the 27th day of Nisan on the Jewish calendar marking the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. The date was
selected by the Israeli Parliament, Knesset, on April 12, 1951. Yom HaShoah became formalized into law on August 19, 1953. Although the date was established by the Israeli government, it has become a day commemorated by Jewish communities and individuals worldwide.
In Israel, Yom HaShoah is commemorated by a one minute blare of sirens throughout the country; it is observed in silence. Wherever Israelis are, they stop what they are doing - if they are driving, they pull their cars over to the side of the road and stand next to their vehicles, if they are at home or in their business, often they will go outside or stand where they are. It is a unifying moment, cutting across religious barriers, generation gaps and economic status.
The United States Congress passed legislation in 1980 establishing the national Days of Remembrance as our nation's annual commemoration for the victims of the Holocaust. The Tennessee Holocaust Commission has organized and planned the Tennessee State Commemoration for 34 years. This year's Tennessee State Day of Remembrance was held on March 27th prior to the end of the legislative session.
This year the National Holocaust Day of Remembrance is April 12, 2018. Many communities will be hosting commemorations across the country throughout the month of April.

Tennessee Holocaust Commission
in its efforts to interview and photograph all survivors and liberators of the Holocaust currently living in Tennessee. The one-hour documentary by NPT Producer Will Pedigo presents the powerful testimony of Tennessee's survivors and liberators as they remember the tragedy, loss and shock of the Holocaust.

Commemorations Across Tennessee

The Jewish Federation of Nashville and Middle Tennessee will host the Community-Wide commemoration of Yom HaShoah at the
Schermerhorn Symphony Center on
Thursday, April 12th at 7:00 p.m.
The Commemoration will be held immediately before the start of the concert featuring Pinchas Zukerman at 7pm. There will be a brief service led by community rabbis, including candle lighting by survivors and their families. The Memphis Jewish Federation will host the 56th Memphis Community-wide Yom HaShoah commemoration on
Thursday, April 12th at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held at the Memphis Jewish Community Center.

, will give the keynote presentation at this year's event, examining clandestine photographs of the Lodz Ghetto taken by Polish Jewish photographer Henryk Ross. Hired to take propaganda photos of the Lodz Ghetto, Mr. Ross secretly captured the horrific and very human daily lives of the Jews sealed into the ghetto.

The Chattanooga Jewish Federation will host the community Yom HaShoah observance on
Wednesday, April, 11th at 7:00p.m. at The Jewish Cultural Center.
The program will begin with a candle lighting ceremony at 7:00 p.m., which will include prayers and readings by rabbis and members of the community. Linda Hooper, former principal of Whitwell Middle School, will speak about the Children's Holocaust Memorial, which she spearheaded, and about the Paper Clip Project and film. She will be joined by Cassie Yawn, a young student who was featured in the film, and by students Madison Gamble and Carsen Hudson. There is no cost to attend.
