Maternal Depression
Maternal Depression
In recognition of mothers who struggle during pregnancy and after birth with feeling down, the Care and Counseling Center of Georgia shines a light on National Maternal Depression Awareness Month. One in seven women develop maternal depression, either during or after pregnancy, according to a 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

While many women report a short-term experience of “the baby blues” after giving birth, this study reveals that many pregnant and post-natal women find themselves dealing with symptoms of ongoing depression, including but not limited to:
  • Irritability
  • Restlessness
  • Social withdrawal
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Lack of motivation
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in eating and sleeping habits
  • Hopelessness
  • A desire to self-harm or harm others

This study also finds that women with this experience frequently avoid seeking help due to a lack of understanding about the condition and the stigma surrounding mental illness. Click here for more information about the study.

Care and Counseling Center of Georgia offers many resources to meet the needs of those experiencing Maternal Depression. Contact us at intake@cccgeorgia.org to learn more or to schedule an appointment.
