Landell Named a 2018 California Distinguished School
Cypress School District is proud to announce that Margaret Landell Elementary School has been named a 2018 California Distinguished School by the California Department of Education. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson announced that 287 elementary schools across the state are being honored this year for exceptional gains in the implementation of academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education.
One of only 46 schools in Orange County eligible to apply, Landell acknowledges its STEM program as a signature instructional practice. Principal Rena Gibbs explained, "We expect our students to be the leaders of the 21st century. Therefore, it is our responsibility to
successfully prepare them for the STEM careers of tomorrow."
Staff attributes their program success to strong community partnerships which have enabled them to build a robust STEM program that includes experiential learning, computer coding, robotics, engineering, and environmental science in a newly constructed, dedicated STEM lab. "These experiences, coupled with our Outdoor Classroom, Landell TV, and our annual STEM Fest, provide
real-world context that makes learning meaningful for our students," Gibbs said.
"STEM education is an important focus in the Cypress School District, and we are extremely proud of the accomplishments at Landell. I appreciate that the California Department of Education recognizes the commitment and hard work of our teachers and staff. There
need to be more opportunities to shine a spotlight on the many great things happening in our schools today," said Superintendent Anne Silavs.
Landell will be honored at the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony on May 3, 2018, at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim.
