MEET THE 2019-20 PUBLIC SAFETY LEADERSHIP
The Public Safety Committee provides legislators with a forum to discuss issues related to public safety and criminal justice at a regional level. In conjunction with the CSG Justice Center, the committee engages lawmakers in policy discussions and the sharing of best practices regarding issues such as justice reinvestment, prisoner reentry, mental illness, crime victims, and other topics.  In 2019, the committee will convene during the 72nd Annual Meeting for in-person member conversations including topic experts on selected key issues.

Representative Sherry Appleton -  As  the Representative of the 23rd-district and a former two-term Poulsbo City Council member, Rep. Appleton has called Poulsbo home for three decades. She was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives in 2004 and is chair of the House Local Government Committee. She is also a member of the House Public Safety and State Government Elections and Information Committee, and the Joint Committee on Veterans' and Military Affairs.   Read Full Bio
 
Representative Chuck Kopp -  A lifelong Alaskan, Rep. Kopp is the son of educators and entrepreneurs. He has a B.A. in Justice from the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) and chose a career in public safety that spanned over 23 years. He served in the Anchorage and Kenai Police Departments and graduated from the National Training Center of Polygraph Science as a Certified Expert Polygraph Examiner. Additionally, he served 7 years as the Chief of Police for the City of Kenai, and as Acting City Manager from 2005 - 2006.    Read Full Bio

Leadership Updates
BE THE NEXT CSG WEST 2020 VICE CHAIR!
Applications for the position of 2020 CSG West Vice Chair are now being accepted. Western legislators interested in serving as an officer of the organization are encouraged to review the criteria and submit an application. 

The CSG West Nominating Committee will review applications and conduct interviews during the upcoming Annual Meeting in Big Sky, Montana. The selected legislator will succeed to the position of CSG West Chair in 2022.


Upcoming Events
Established in 1998, the Legislative Council on River Governance (LCRG) is comprised of state legislators from each of the Columbia River basin states of Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. Members meet annually to discuss common challenges facing the people living and doing business in the basin, as well as share strategies for addressing these concerns.  The LCRG meeting is open to appointed members, as well as legislators and legislative staff interested in attending.
