How Time Flies When You're Having Fun!

Tomorrow will mark 3 months since Candidate Weekend and Call Sunday. For me, it has been a whirlwind of activity. Getting the hang of the rhythms, Sunday worship prep, introductions to Deerfield people and happenings, beginning my rounds of visits with you. Oh, yes, with Lent, Holy Week and Easter factored in.
I had a great time last weekend with organizing and hosting celebrations for my mother's 85th birthday in Lexington, KY. You'll actually get to meet her next month. Why? When? Where?

My mother, my brother and my aunts will be here at Trinity for a special celebration on June 9, 2019.   That is the day of my formal Installation as the Settled Pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. This congregation has only had two other installations in its history, last being 27 years ago. So this is an event you won't want to miss! The other special occasion is that this will be the 35th Anniversary of my Ordination on June 9th, 1984. The Rev. Dr. Vertie Powers, Associate Conference Minister, will be our preacher of the day and there will be other special guests and special music. There will be a reception afterward featuring food and more music (of course we're having a big party!)

Sunday afternoon, we will gather at 3:30 PM for these festivities, Deerfield area clergy and the Chicago Metropolitan Association will be invited. So come early to get a good seat!

Receiving New Members June 9, 2019 Sunday AM Worship

We will receive new members in Worship on Sunday morning June 9. If you are interested in joining, or exploring what that might mean, please contact me. I will schedule a new member class accordingly.

A Message from Scott Peterson

At Trinity this year, Lent was a time to pause and reflect: on our Finitude, our Temptation, our Unwillingness, our Silence, our Tears, and our Fears. On Maundy Thursday, we shared a Seder dinner together. On Easter we paused to Celebrate the Promise. Lent was a special season of worship. Thanks to Pastor Dale for her leadership during this important time in the life of the Church.

Lent was a time for action as well as reflection. Trinity continued to support our 3 Loves initiatives during the season. Our members participated in Feed My Starving Children and prepared and served a PADS dinner. The church made financial contributions to both of those organizations with funds from our Mission budget. Our members also collected food for the Deerfield food pantry. Thanks to all who participated in these important activities.

Looking ahead, we see more opportunities for action. Trinity is hosting a "river day" on May 11 in conjunction with the Friends of the Chicago River. Other Love of Creation activities are scheduled for the month. The Deerfield Farmers Market begins this month. Again this year, Trinity will support the Gleaning initiative at the market, helping facilitate collection and distribution of unsold goods to people who need benefit from receiving fresh fruit and produce.

It is a special time to be part of Trinity Deerfield!
Scott Peterson

Music to Our Ears

The Worship and Program committee would like to recognize Pastor Dale, Evan, and the choir for the beautiful music they shared with us throughout the Lenten season. Thank You!

Adult Bible Study - Begins Thursday, May 2 at 10:00 AM

We will use a curriculum entitled, Questions, Questions and More Questions. It's actually the first year of a two year program that Pastor Dale created for Confirmation Classes. We will adapt it for adults and have a chance to delve into questions of the Bible and our faith from an adult perspective.

Earth Day - Moving Forward

More information about the UCC involvement with the environment.

Did you know that UCC ministers coined the phrase "environmental racism" and played a leading role in giving birth to the environmental justice movement in the 1980's?
  • During a 6 week campaign of civil disobedience in 1982, a movement was born that made national headlines and introduced the world to the issue of environmental racism. Read A Movement is Born

Did you know that the UCC is building a powerful environmental network that stays connected through a blog and e-newsletter called The Pollinator?
  • The Pollinator is a digital platform of the UCC for the sharing of ideas and inspiration, so that we might become more fruitful in the pursuit of environmental justice. Its focus is the building of a faith-filled and faith-rooted movement for the care of creation.

Did you know that the UCC has formed a special partnership with a leading climate organization called 350.org, so that church green teams are now becoming 350 affiliates?
  • Members of the United Church of Christ have often worked with 350.org in the pursuit of justice and shared goals. This informal, longstanding relationship is now being deepened through a pilot endeavor that encourages and invites UCC green teams to affiliate with 350. Read about the UCC partnership with 350.org

Chicago River Day

This year Trinity UCC is excited to host a Chicago River Day event here in our own backyard! We will be doing stewardship activities like trail building, mulching and removing invasive species, and collecting litter. Join neighbors, friends, and fellow land and water stewards for Friends of the Chicago River's largest volunteer event of the year, Chicago River Day.

Date and Time
Sat, May 11, 2019
9:00 am - 12:00 pm

Please register through our event page:  Chicago River Day

Let's join together to take care of this amazing natural resource in our own backyard. We are partners in a broader action taking place throughout the watershed.

Friends is celebrating 40 years of bringing the river to life and invites you to show your support for a healthier river by volunteering! Together, throughout the 156 miles of watershed, everyday heroes will improve watershed habitat.

Please register so we can ensure we send enough bags, gloves and T-shirts for our location. Be sure to wear closed toed shoes, work clothes (long sleeves and pants) that can get dirty, and bring a full water bottle.Registration open until Sunday, May 5, 2019.

Farmer's market
Gleanings at the Deerfield Farmer's Market
Saturday, May 18th 11:30 - 1:30

We will need 2 or 3 volunteers to help set up a tent roof and two tables at the Farmer's Market, near the Deerfield train station.   We receive unsold produce from three or four vendors, which is then distributed to food pantry clients and residents of One Deerfield Place.

Please sign up on the bulletin board in the Gathering Hall or call the office at 847-945-5050 if you are interested in helping.  For more information, see Roger Dart.  The additional dates for Trinity's participation are July 6th, and September 7th.

Sunday School News and Parent Meeting

As the Spring semester comes to a close, our students will be studying "friends" in both the Hebrew Bible and New Testament. What a great theme with which to head into Summer!

We've tentatively scheduled a "Sunday School Year in Review" meeting for June 2 after worship service. We'd like to look at the past year, what went well, what could use improvement, plans for summer session, and possible assignments/updates for the 2019-2020 school year and its curriculum. All are Welcome!

Conference Disaster Coordinators Meet in Puerto Rico

The April 2019 UCC Conference Disaster Coordinators meeting drew a record 23 participants from across the continental United States and Hawai'i. "There is energy for this ministry across the church, and 23 people came to Puerto Rico to say 'yes' to the call of caring for our neighbors through UCC Disaster Ministries," said Amanda Sheldon, Program Associate, National Disaster and Refugee Ministries. "It is humbling to be part of a ministry that has been serving disaster survivors for nearly 20 years."

High on the group's agenda is the launch of a new church preparedness toolkit. Created collaboratively, the toolkit will be unveiled at UCC General Synod, meeting June 21-25 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Trinity's very own Roger Dart is in the back row with the dark glasses on.

United Church of Christ - GENERAL SYNOD 32

This is the biennial meeting of the United Church of Christ where 700 delegates and 2,500 visitors gather to consider the business of the United Church of Christ. The exciting thing is that this year, the meeting will be in MILWAUKEE, WI. And adding to the excitement, our very own Jen Holz will be a delegate.
There will be an opportunity for all of you to participate in the Public Worship on Sunday afternoon, June 23rd. The Convention Hall will be open to anyone in driving distance. It really is something to experience the UCC on a wider scale and meet our members from all over the country. You'll hear more details in the near future. I have attended every General Synod (except two) since 1983.
