"How long, O Lord? How long?"

On Tuesday, in Sunnyvale, CA, a 34-year-old Army veteran of the war in Iraq intentionally careened his car through a crowded intersection, injuring eight pedestrians, per the  San Francisco ChronicleThe former sharpshooter  "targeted the victims because he thought some of them were Muslim, police officials said."

Then on a day where Jewish communities gather to celebrate the promise of liberation, six months to the day from the shooting at Tree of Life in Pittsburgh, we grieve with Chabad of Poway, in San Diego County, CA, amidst another senseless shooting.

"How long, O Lord?"

Strategic Partners for Spiritual Care: Progress Report #1
Amy Greene
As you know, ACPE leaders have been meeting regularly with our Strategic Partners to explore ways we can more closely and intentionally work together. These conversations continue to evolve, and I have to say it is such a privilege to be a part of such a collegial and constructive conversation. While the specifics need to be worked out by all of us together, including the membership, we offer the following progress report as an update and a reminder of our ongoing commitment to collaborative work.

Funding for Innovative CPE Projects
The 2019 Innovative Program Awards funding cycle is now open!

Funded by a portion of funds raised through the Sowing Seeds for our Holy Work Annual Campaign, Innovative Program Awards support ACPE members and/or centers in the achievement of ACPE's Strategic Initiatives. Specifically, these innovative projects allow ACPE to support the development and dissemination of new and experimental programs that extend CPE into atypical settings, test and disseminate new pastoral/spiritual care theology and education, and/or develop new research concepts and methodologies.
New Accreditation Process Update
Pam Lazor,
Accreditation Commission, Chair
Over the past several months, your Accreditation Commissioners have been meeting together on a weekly basis to continue the development of the new accreditation process and to plan for its implementation. The energy and enthusiasm are palpable and we look forward to all that is to come as we continue building towards final implementation in January 2020.

I am pleased to share some reminders with you and provide you with additional information:

Interim Psychotherapy Commission: Membership, Liability Malpractice Insurance, & New FAQS
JoannHeaney-Hunter
Joann Heaney-Hunter, Interim Psychotherapy Commission, Chair
With ACPE's Annual Conference just a few weeks away, the interim Psychotherapy Commission is working diligently on issues of membership requirements and standards. As we move forward, we hope to welcome many new members into ACPE as psychotherapists and practitioners, retired members, and student members. In addition, we want to create pathways for eligible student members to move into the practitioner membership category and for practitioner members to qualify as psychotherapists in the near future. We will lay the foundation for these policies during our first in-person meeting in Scottsdale on May 10th and will share updates on our progress in future newsletters.

New CPE Transcript Feature Now Available
ACPE members and students can now sign-in to their accounts to review, download, and print their transcript! This transcript, electronically signed by the ACPE registrar, contains a proprietary "ACPE Transcript" watermark and is an official document.

Did you know that ACPE has hundreds of thousands of records dating back a century? ACPE currently has three sets of records for student units dating back to the 1920's: paper files (yellow cards) for units registered prior to 2000, the original digital database for units registered between 2000 and October 2015, and our current online database for units registered after October 2015 through the present.

New Resource: Topics in Bioethics
Check out our new Resource Library on the Members' Site Home Page in SharePoint!.

In the library, you will find a series of short presentations, discussion guides, and reference lists for topics in bioethics. The series was voluntary developed by Dr. Carrie Fisher, a community member on the Children's Hospital, Los Angeles (CHLA) Spiritual Care Advisory Committee where she facilitates a monthly ethics discussion group with the staff and student chaplains.

Weekly Highlights
This Week's Reflection
As we prepare for our time with David Whyte, we want to prime your appetite for his leadership with us. Here's a poem that speaks to the heart of our process:
SOMETIMES
by David Whyte

Sometimes
if you move carefully
through the forest,

breathing
like the ones
in the old stories,

who could cross
a shimmering bed of leaves
without a sound,

you come to a place
whose only task

is to trouble you
with tiny
but frightening requests,

conceived out of nowhere
but in this place
beginning to lead everywhere.

Requests to stop what
you are doing right now,
and

to stop what you
are becoming
while you do it,

questions
that can make
or unmake
a life,

questions
that have patiently
waited for you,

questions
that have no right
to go away.
