Earlier this week, Brenda Bauer was recognized by the American Heart Association for her dedication, energy and enthusiasm in raising money for kids with 'special hearts.' Since BFA opened its doors, Mrs. Bauer has organized five Jump Rope for Heart fundraisers. This year, her passion for raising money for kids like our own Sam Leclaire inspired students to raise $20,633.06 for Jump Rope for Heart - a new record for BFA!
Mrs. Bauer was surprised with a certificate of appreciation and banner announcing that Ben Franklin Academy is in the sixth spot in Colorado for Jump Rope for Heart Fundraisers in 2017-18. Morgan June, youth market director for the American Heart Association, said, "I am so very impressed and grateful for your community's support of the American Heart/Stroke Association and honored to tell you that Ben Franklin is in the TOP 10 in the state of Colorado for fundraising this year! Brenda invests so much time and passion into making Jump Rope for Heart a meaningful experience for the Ben Franklin community."
And, I'm sure Mrs. Bauer would like us to mention again that this year Mrs. DePasse's class had 100 percent participation, and Olivia Veigel was our TOP FUNDRAISER! In addition, Mr. Macias, the middle school team, and student council did an amazing job raising money through their Dodgeball for Dollars tournament. Thank you for your support!
Thanks to all the families who participated in this year's Jump Rope for Heart event--your generosity will provide support for kids and adults who have 'special hearts,' and they will have better knowledge about diagnosis, surgical intervention and treatment thanks to advancing research done by the American Heart Association. And, congratulations again to Mrs. Bauer!

This year's BFA motto was, '
Be BRAVE...Do Hard Things!' There are many examples of our students doing something challenging this school year--for some kids that challenge might be raising their hand in class or reading a chapter book, while to others it means choosing a difficult science fair project or trying a new sport.
Trying something new, whether you succeed or fail, facilitates growth so we're proud of ALL our students who faced a new challenge, did something outside their comfort zone and/or showed integrity in the choices they made. Below are a few examples from our staff of students they saw living the motto this school year:
Mrs. Jones: The girls soccer team fought back against Aspen View Academy and two losses to win the semi-final and play in championship game. That took hard work and perseverance. I am so proud of all of them!
Mrs. North: One of my first graders shows incredible leadership on the playground. He always makes sure teams are fair and everyone plays.
John Emmons and the Sixth Grade Team: Traversing middle school can be difficult with issues of homework, friendships, and the day-to-day of being a teenager.
Gracie Billups has done all of this on top of completing 850 days of chemo-therapy treatment. Gracie showed up each day with a willingness to learn, a smile on her face, and a life outside the hospital room. She has truly been an inspiration for the sixth grade students and team this year at BFA. We could not be happier for her and her family--and are thrilled she is through her SUCCESSFUL treatments so she can join the rest of her classmates dealing with the usual middle-school issues.
Ms. Rooney: Hooray for my student who made tremendous progress this year in writing. By the end of the year, he was able to write a comprehensive five-paragraph essay with a well-developed thesis statement.
Ms. Poleschook:
Ben Hoffman spent quite a bit of time helping to clean up Redstone Park when middle school field day was over. While other kids were playing or hanging out, he did the hard thing of putting off fun and being responsible for, not only himself but his classmates too.
Ms. Dychus: I want to recognize all the students in grades 3 through 8 who participated in the Continental Math League this year. For each of the five meets, students were given six challenging math problems to try and solve in 30 minutes. Our students had to think outside the box and apply their knowledge to problems--some of which were unlike anything they had ever seen. They showed a lot of grit and perseverance and did a fantastic job!
Mrs. Gibson: We have a student,
Lynn Ho, who was new to our school this year. She has made great strides and found new friends. She also came through in a big way for her team on Field Day during the tire race! The seventh grade team is excited to see what she will accomplish next year!
Mrs. Keen: I'm so proud of all the students who stood up in front of guest judges and parents to perform a song and a monologue at the Audition Prep class this year. This was a brand-new experience for some of these kids. It took a lot of courage and they all did a great job!
These kids tried something new, faced a challenge head-on, and/or accomplished their goals because the love and support of their parents, coaches and teachers made them feel safe while taking a chance. Thanks for all you do, and we hope you'll share in recognizing the hard things your student accomplished this year!

Thank you everyone who has served on, volunteered for, and supported the PTO this year! It has been a great year, with many memorable events.
Each year, with the generous donations from our BFA community, the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) provides the school with tools, materials, and financial support for important programs, including: Lexia, Accelerated Reader incentives, Directory On Tap, new software, student planners, teacher, staff and volunteer appreciation; and community events - just to name a few! This school year, the PTO also has purchased:
- Fencing along Plaza Drive (shared cost with BFA)
- Software coding kits for elementary classes
- New playground equipment, including a larger, paved tetherball area
- Laser printer and cartridges for middle school STEAM classes
- New risers for musical performances (shared cost with BFA)
- Spirit rock
- Replacement headphones for all kindergarten classes
- Costumes and sets for the "Seussical Jr." musical
- Fees for HawkQuest to attend BFA's STEM Expo
- More than 1,000 Field Day T-shirts for all students and staff
- Field Day bounce houses and Kona Ice
Additionally, thanks to the generosity of the BFA community and our annual sponsors, last fall's
BENefit Bash netted approximately $54,000, which will be used to build an outdoor classroom and to fulfill teacher requests in the 2018-19 school year.
Thank you again for your unwavering support!

On Friday, May 18, a group of seventh grade girls, along with
Mrs. Denham and
Mrs. Crespo, attended the
Girls Exploring STEM (GESTEM) event at the Auraria Campus in Downtown Denver.
They joined approximately 1,250 other seventh grade girls from the metro area to engage in hands-on STEM workshops. The goal of the event is to inspire girls by introducing them to the exciting possibilities of STEM careers, demonstrate how teamwork plays a part in STEM careers, and show that innovation requires diversity.

PICK UP UNSOLD ITEMS FROM UNIFORM SALE
The PTO had another successful uniform sale last weekend and even though we sold a lot, there were still a few items to be picked up by parents after the sale. The family numbers listed below have unsold garments. If you are on this list and would like to keep your unsold uniform items, please pick them up between 1-3 p.m. on Friday, May 25, at the school in the main hallway. If you do not pick them up, they will be donated to the PTO. Thank you all for your contributions whether you sold items, purchased items, or volunteered!

IMPORTANT REMINDERS FROM THE HEALTH ROOM
As this school year comes to a close, we have a few important health room reminders for parents. According to state law,
students entering sixth grade next school year must have received the Tdap vaccination to protect against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis. Students entering sixth grade, and
students new to BFA for grades 6-8 must show proof of immunization. Records can be dropped off in the school health office,
emailed to the health office, or faxed to 303-974-1738.
Please plan to
pick up your student's medication(s) by the end of this school year--on or before tomorrow, May 25. All medications that are not picked up by parents at the end of the school year will be disposed of (expired or not). If you cannot personally pick up your student's medication, please send a signed note to school stating who will be picking up the medication.
If your student will be attending the summer BASE program at school, you must transfer medications to this program by
contacting the summer camp coordinators.
Per DCSD,
new medication forms are required at the beginning of each school year, as forms from the prior school year will be EXPIRED. You can find the new forms on our
website, and they will be available through Express Check-In. If appropriate, please plan on taking the forms to your health care provider so he/she can complete them this summer and you can turn in the forms next school year.
Forms must be dated July 1, 2018, or later to be valid for next school year.
At registration, we'll begin accepting signed forms for the 2018-19 school year along with any medication (stored in a properly labeled container) your student needs at school. Also, please remember, the
Provider Medication Authorization Form needs to be completed and signed before we can dispense over the counter medicine (OTC), and any OTC medicine provided to the school must be in the original container.

Carpool
Please keep your carpool tags, and bring them with you to registration. At that time, we'll give you the new 2018-19 validation sticker. You may order additional carpool tags through our payments system,

The current uniform policy can always be found on our website under the 'Parents' tab. The last significant uniform policy changes were made last year, and include a phase-out of the blue and khaki jumper, the plaid belt, the oxford button down, and the quarter zip pullover. Those items will not be permissible under the Uniform Policy next school year.
Keep in mind that Educational Outfitters, our only uniform vendor, is having a 20 percent off sale May 15 - 31, a 15 percent off sale June 1 - 15, and a 10 percent off sale June 16 - July 10. Frequently Asked Questions link. If you still have issues,
email our registrar. Please note: Families new to Douglas County School District (DCSD), will need to set up their parent portal according to the instructions DCSD will send on July 1.
Express Check-In will open on Wednesday, July 25. To avoid delays in your student's registration, you must
complete Express Check-In AND pay your student fees by Tuesday, Aug. 7. Following are the annual student fees for the 2018-19 school year:

Keep in mind, student photos will be taken during registration, so students should wear a uniform shirt to registration. Photos for volunteer badges will also be taken during this time.
If you have a new address or moved over summer, please bring proof of residency documents (warranty deed, tax notice, deed of trust, rental or lease agreement) to registration. In addition, if there are updated legal documents for your student, this is a good time to bring those to our Registrar.

EARN MONEY FOR BFA WHILE YOU SHOP
Did you know you can earn money for BFA each time you shop at King Soopers and Safeway? Buy groceries, gasoline at fuel centers, lottery tickets and postage stamps while helping BFA at the same time! (Safeway gift cards also can be used at Albertson's locations.)
How?
Simply
order a dedicated BFA King Soopers and/or Safeway gift card from the BFA Store, and use it to buy your groceries. Then, re-load your King Soopers or Safeway gift card at Customer Service or at the register before you scan your first item.
Online shoppers can use grocery cards too! Shoppers using Safeway's online service can make purchases with their Safeway grocery card, while King Soopers online shoppers can pay using their grocery card when they pick up their order.
Ordering your King Soopers and Safeway cards is easy!
Just go to the
BFA Store, click on 'Grocery Cards' and order yours today. The cards are pre-loaded with $5. When ordering, be sure to include your FIRST/LAST NAME and FULL MAILING ADDRESS. Your King Soopers/ Safeway card(s) will be mailed directly to the address provided. Once the order is received, please allow five business days for processing.
Need a new card?
If it's been a while since you used your card, and it's been left with a zero balance, your card will expire! Please
order a new card through the store, as the zero balance card will no longer give rebates back to BFA.
The King Soopers and Safeway fundraising programs donate five percent of your purchases back to the school. BFA raised more than $5,500 through this program last year!
For more information or questions,
email
Rachel Molieri, PTO spirit wear and grocery card coordinator.

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
|
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school. Finally, we recognize that an education is incomplete without fostering the arts, sports, nature, and character.
