Lockerly Newsletter April 2018
|
From the Director
I'll be honest: coming into the horticulture field without a horticulture background was S-C-A-R-Y. I knew I could handle the nonprofit side of things, but ask me about the best care and maintenance of our ACS Reference Garden and my palms start to sweat.
I was encouraged early on, by a very supportive board, to visit other gardens, talk to horticulture professionals, master gardeners, etc and begin building my horticulture network and knowledge.
And all I can say, is: WOW.
In a world where professionals could easily be territorial, guarded or selfish, I have only found generosity, kindness and a willingness to share information and experiences.
And it doesn't stop with professional colleagues. All of you, our dedicated supporters and volunteers have been unfailingly kind and generous with your time, knowledge and donations to Lockerly. For that, I can't thank you enough!
I still can't tell an ash tree from an elm tree, but that lack of knowledge no longer scares me. I now know I have colleagues, volunteers and supporters to help me out. To all of you, I say THANK YOU!!
Happy spring!
Jennifer

Celebrate National Arbor Day at Lockerly
Celebrate National Arbor Day at Lockerly with Japanese Maple expert David Freed.
This fun and educational session will be from 10am - 12pm on Saturday, April 28, 2018. The cost is $10 for members and $20 for non-members. The event includes an educational session and a pruning demonstration by Mr. Freed on a lovely Crimson Queen on Lockerly's grounds.

This lovely Crimson Queen on the rear of the property is the subject of Mr. Freed's pruning demonstration.
|
David Freed started grafting Japanese maples in his backyard in 2000. Garden Design Nursery in Madison County grew from that beginning, and provides one of the largest collections of Japanese maples for sale in Georgia. David and his manager, Margarito, are known for their artful and aesthetic pruning of Japanese maples. The basic techniques presented will be a common sense approach to highlighting the natural beauty of Japanese maples, and maintaining their health.
Space is limited, so click HERE to register today!

Meet Don!
This is Don McKay. We don't know a lot about Don; we know he is from Belize (he has a great accent!), he rides his bike all over Milledgeville, and he loves Lockerly. We will occasionally see Don on the grounds enjoying the sunshine or filling water bottles in the gazebo.
We've often heard that Mr. Grassmann wanted Lockerly to be a gift to a community that he loved. We like to think that Don's enjoyment of Lockerly is just another way of fulfilling Mr. Grassmann's wishes.
