Oculus is an e-newsletter that is distributed by the OU Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA) during the fall and spring semesters. It features news about student, faculty, staff and alumni accomplishments, as well as events that may be of interest to our community. Note that there is a weekly version of the newsletter for a local audience, and a monthly version for a broader audience. Please share your news and events by noon each Friday to be considered for the following week's issue of Oculus.

Architecture Faculty Present "Surface Flux" at Factory Obscura in OKC

Join us for the opening reception of "Surface Flux," an exhibit by OU Humanities Forum Fellow and assistant professor of architecture Deborah Richards, along with assistant professor Ken Marold, on Thursday, May 2nd, at Factory Obscura in Oklahoma City. The reception is from 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. "Surface Flux" is an architecturally-driven exhibit that explores space through computationally designed and digitally fabricated surfaces. It will be on display from May 2 - June 2, 2019. The event is free and open to the public.

Graduating Seniors Honored for Outstanding Academic Achievement

Students from the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture's (GCA) Architecture, Construction Science, Environmental Design, and Interior Design undergraduate programs were recently recognized for having the highest overall GPAs among their graduating classes. GCA Dean Hans E. Butzer was on hand to present them with their awards during the OU Campus Awards Program on Friday, April 5, 2019. Among the honorees were Clay Dobbins (Architecture), Liliana Lopez (Construction Science), Daniel Woodruff (Environmental Design) and Emma Smith (Interior Design).

Construction Science Professor, Student Earn ASC Research Honor

Dr. Tammy McCuen, professor of construction science, and Muzibur Rahman, doctoral candidate in Planning, Design and Construction, recently earned the Associated Schools of Construction Proceedings' "Best Paper Honorable Mention" for 2019. Their paper, titled "Current State of Construction Management Faculty Searches in the United States," was presented at the 55th Annual ASC International Conference in Denver, Colorado. Dr. McCuen was the lead author, with co-authors Dr. David Gunderson (Washington State University) and Muzibur Rahman.

Construction Science Professor Emeritus Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

Ken Robson, an emeritus professor of construction science, has received the  2019 Associated Schools of Construction Lifetime Achievement Award The award is given annually to individual(s) who have made significant lifelong contributions to construction education. It recognizes the exemplary efforts of individuals who have worked throughout their career to develop and advance construction education through sharing of ideas/ knowledge, inspiration, guidance and/or the promotion of excellence in curricula, teaching, research and service.

BlackSpace Oklahoma Holds Successful Series of Events

Non-profit BlackSpace Oklahoma held a series of events in March for their "NE OKC Storytelling Project" lecture series. BlackSpace Oklahoma was founded by Gibbs College of Architecture affiliate faculty Gina Sofola and Vanessa MorrisonIn collaboration with OU's Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA), BlackSpace NYC , Oklahoma Humanities , and the Women of Northeast OKC Photovoice Project , the lecture series was held on numerous days throughout the month at the historic auditorium at Page Woodson.  The events consisted of three lectures, oral history sessions and a digital storytelling workshop.

Architecture Professor Speaks at the 2019 "Accessibility in Housing Seminar"

Associate professor of architecture Dave Boeck recently presented a talk on "New Construction, Home Additions, and Remodels Designed to Support Accessibility, Visitability and Aging in Place" as part of a day-long "Accessibility in Housing Seminar" looking at visitability in residential design in Norman, Oklahoma. The seminar was sponsored by Oklahoma Adapt, the Metropolitan Fair Housing Council, The Oklahoma Council for Affordable Housing, Project Independence, and DeBruler and Associates.

Landscape Architecture Student Organization Provides Workshops

The Student Chapter of American Society of  Landscape Architects (SCASLA) recently hosted several workshops for its members and for students from across the college. The workshops invited professionals to share their skills with students throughout the Gibbs College of Architecture (GCA).

Alumni Highlight: Weldon Bowman, Urban Design and Architecture

As part of our efforts to highlight and learn more about the amazing work our alumni are doing, this week we talked to Urban Design Studio alumnus Weldon Bowman! Weldon graduated from the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture in 2001 with a degree in Architecture and then went on to earn his masters from the OU Urban Design Studio in 2003. He now owns his own firm, W Design, which was recently awarded AIA Eastern Oklahoma Firm of the Year. We picked his brain to learn more about his experience as a GCA student and what he has been up to since graduating.

Tulsa Urban Design Studio Juries to be Held April 27 at Tulsa Foundation for Architecture

On Saturday, April 27th, students pursuing the Master of Urban Design degree at OU-Tulsa will be presenting their capstone projects. Each student was encouraged to pursue an original design or research projects that benefits Tulsa and Oklahoma. Projects include Robbie Wing's "Towards an Understanding of Wholeness," Daniel Jeffries' "Lively and Livable: Reinvigorating 2nd Street," Saudamini Inamdar's "City Gateways for Broken Arrow," Ray Powell's "Explorer Park Placemaking," Joel Hensley's "Cottage Communities: Macro to Micro," and Katie Wing's "Exploring Perceptions of Safety: Denver Avenue Station."

Interior Design Students to Host Two Furniture Design Shows in May

You are invited to attend the sophomore Interior Design students' Furniture Design Shows during the first week in May. Students' iterative designs consider The American School and the work of Bruce Goff and the students of his era. Central to The American School philosophy were considerations of organic architecture and how a building's context can influence design outcomes. The students welcome your presence and feedback.

Design-Build Course to Be Offered at Creating_Making Lab During Summer Intersession

Instructors Francesco Cianfarani and Garrett Stowe are offering a three credit hour design-build course during the 2019 Summer Intersession. Students in the course will design and build a playhouse to be auctioned in support of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA). The course will run from May 12th to June 7th and will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in the Creating_Making Lab. Space is limited, so enroll today!

"Rethinking Women's Prison Designs" Course to Be Offered During Fall 2019 Semester

A seminar/elective class entitled "Rethinking Women's Prison Designs" (ARCH 4970/5970 and JMC 4970/5970) will be offered during the Fall 2019 semester! Join architecture Associate Prof. Marjorie P. GCA Alumnus to Offer "Drawing on Location" Rendering Class through Norman Firehouse Art Center

Join OU GCA alumnus Fred Schmidt, FAIA, for a "drawing on location" rendering class, hosted by the Firehouse Art Center in Norman. Schmidt has made numerous contributions to the architecture profession in Oklahoma. He was recently honored with the AIA's Williams Wayne Caudill Award, as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished leadership. He is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and a past President of AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter.
