Clothing for a Cause
Inside the East End Cooperative Ministry in East Liberty, two incredibly empowered women have taken it upon themselves to give back to the community through job training and human connection. Hannah Moon, a former teacher at the Art Institute, and Reverend Kellie Wild, EECM's IMPACTS director, started "Sew Forward" in February 2017 to aid those with few opportunities by giving them the skills they need to find employment and care in all facets along the way.
"We developed Sew Forward Pittsburgh to help folks get employed, to put it very plainly," Wild explains, "the goal is to teach individuals a skill that they can use to then become employed with, and move out of poverty, start their own business... but the purpose of it is to help, especially people who have barriers to employment". Most of the participants are those with low levels of education or Pittsburghers with a criminal history, but recently refugees and immigrants have been taking advantage of the program as well. As the name, "Sew Forward" leads one to assume, the skills taught are sewing and the production of clothing. With grants from RK Mellon, the Pennsylvania Smart Grants program, and additional help from private donors and religious congregations, Sew Forward has been able to graduate 35 students in the two years it has been in operation.
Another source of funding comes from partnership with local businesses and designers, who employ the services of Sew Forward. As Moon tells me, "local business owners or independent designers come visit us for the production support usually they go to other states or overseas, but they always ask higher minimums and higher labor costs. We have an affordable price range and can provide better services and communicate better. Also, they understand the meaning behind the products. It means a lot for them." One of the most frequent utilizers of Sew Forward is MoopShop, run by tote and handbag designer Wendy Downs, along with Rona Chang's children's clothing and home products company Otto Finn. While Moon and Wild appreciate the cooperation they've already had with local business owners, they are still seeking sponsors to ensure the continuation of their mission. Last Thursday, April 18th, Acrobatique hosted the fifth annual "Ecolution" Fashion Show, at the Fairmont Hotel in Pittsburgh: this years title was "Rebirth".
Ecolution is an Earth Week runway show to raise awareness for local Artists and Fashion Designers who use eco friendly, refurbished materials to create a garment of their choosing to be worn on the runway. The designs were judged on beauty, creativity, and most importantly the sustainable use of their materials. Recyclables such cable cords, VCR tape, umbrellas, toilet paper rolls, maxi-pad wrappers, trash bags, wire hangers, packing tape, discarded phone books, rotary phone cords, and aluminum screens, were were all used to create original designs.
The show featured local Pittsburgh fashion designer/model Evita Scotia, as she walked her own design down the runway. Be on the lookout for more designs from her this fall during Pittsburgh Fashion Week runway.
There was also a live performance by Pittsburgh's own 2015 contestant of The Voice, Mia Zannotti, who will be performing at The Downtown CDC's summer event, The International StrEAT festival on June 1st and 2nd..
