Education

 

I reported in my recent post Session newsletter that the teachers will be receiving a $3,000 raise, and the three school districts I represent--DeKalb, Decatur, and Atlanta--will be making decisions on how to implement this benefit.  Many of you followed education issues as the most important focus of every Session, and I link for your review here a comprehensive list of education bills that came up in the 2019 session.  One of these bills, HB 530, I worked on closely, and I am very happy with its passage.  HB 530 prohibits parents from withdrawing children from public school without a filed plan for homeschooling or specific information on transfers to other schools.  This is an important safeguard for children who parents are withdrawing them from school to avoid  truancy oversight or child abuse investigations. 

 

SB 15, the "Keeping Georgia's School Safe Act" passed despite strong opposition ( I voted NO) based on stronger required involvement of law enforcement in student discipline offenses, and expanded oversight of the state on safety plans.

Under current law, early voting can take place for three weeks prior to election day. Each year some members of the General Assembly propose bills to shorten the time for early voting. Do you support reducing the time for early voting?

Legislation is being considered that would call for a 4% tax on the bills of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. Comcast service and similar bills already include a 4% tax. The revenue generated by this tax would be used to expand broadband coverage in rural Georgia. Do you approve of this tax and its proposed use?
