Yay! Summer is here and we are all excited to get out and explore! We want to wish you a happy and fun Fourth of July. We will be closed on the Fourth of July, so that Ron Flint can be the Parade, Grand Marshall this year. Please make sure you give him a shout-out if you are at the parade. What is in your Water?
|
Even though Alaskans are fortunate to have great tasting and high-quality water, we still need to be cautious about the dangers of drinking untreated water on any trip into the backcountry. There are many parasites and viruses that find their way into streams and lakes from the many creatures that share the outdoors with us. The table below lists the most common protozoa, bacteria and viruses that are transmitted through contaminated drinking water and the symptoms they cause. The best way to avoid getting any of these bugs is to treat any water that you plan to ingest.

Amoebiasis
|
Abdominal discomfort, fatigue, weight loss, diarrhea, bloating, fever.

Cryptospoidiosis
|
Flu-like symtoms, water diarrhea, loss of appetite, substantial loss of weight, bloating, increased gas, nausea.
|
|
Cyclosporiasis
|
Cramps, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, fever and fatigue.
|
|
Giardiasis
|
Diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, bloating and flatulence.
|
|
Microspoidiosis
|
|
Bacterial
|
Botulism
|
Dry mouth, blurred and/or double vision, difficulty swallowing, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, slurred speech, vomiting and sometimes diarrhea. Death is usually caused by respiratory failure.
|
|
Campylobacteriosis
|
Produces dysentery-like symptoms along with a high fever. Usually lasts 2-10 days.
|
|
Cholera
|
Very watery diarrhea, nausea, cramps, nosebleed, rapid pulse, vomiting and hypovolemic shock at which point death can occur in 12-18 hours.
|
|
E. coli infection
|
Mostly diarrhea. Can cause death in immunocompromised individuals, the very young and the elderly due to dehydration from prolonged illness.
|
|
M. marinum infection
|
Painless or painful lesions typically located on the elbows, knees, hands and feet.
|
|
Dysentery
|
Frequent passage of feces with blood and/or mucus and in some case vomiting blood. |
|
Leptospirosis
|
First stage of flu-like symptoms, second stage of meningitis, liver damage and renal failure.
|
|
Salmonellosis
|
Diarrhea, fever, vomiting and abdominal cramps.
|
|
Typhoid fever
|
Sustained fever up to 104 °F, profuse sweating, diarrhea, progresses to delirium, enlarged spleen and liver, may have rash on abdomen and chest. If left untreated can cause death.
|
|
Vibrio Illness
|
Abdominal tenderness, agitation, bloody stools, chills, confusion, difficulty paying attention, delirium, fluctuating mood, hallucination, nosebleeds, severe fatigue, lethargic feeling, weakness.
|
Viral
|
SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome)
|
Fever, myalgia, lethargy, gastrointestinal symptoms, cough and sore throat.
|
|
Hepatitis A
|
Acute fatigue, fever, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, weight loss, itching, jaundice and depression
|
|
Poliomyelitis (Polio)
|
90-95% of affected show no symptoms, 4-8% may have delirium, headache, fever, seizures and spastic paralysis, 1% have non-paralytic aseptic meningitis, paralysis or death.
|
|
Polyomavirus infection
|
Mild respiratory infection, kidney infection, may cause multifocal leukoencephalopathy in the brain which is fatal.
|
|
Rotavirus A
|
Severe watery diarrhea, vomiting, fever and abdominal pain
|
|
Norovirus/ Norwalk
|
Symptoms occur 12-48 hours after exposure and include diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain. Recovery
typically occurs within 1-3 days. |

Water Treatment Systems
|
Here is a breakdown of the 20 different water treatment options available at the Nugget Outfitter...
There are basically two types of water treatment - Filters and Purifiers.
There are many types of filters starting with single-use, at-source filters (Lifestraw) or squeeze bag filters (Katadyn BeFree) and moving on to more advanced hand pump systems ideal for single or group use, and finally, gravity filters which can easily supply enough for a group and require no pumping. All of the filters at NAO have a mesh that is small enough to remove Cryptosporidium. Cryptosporidium has a hard, outer case, which is resistant to chemical treatments. Chlorine Dioxide can kill Cryptosporidium, but you have to wait a whopping 4 hours for full effect. Filters vary in size, ease of use, weight and cost, so please refer to the chart below for specific information about each water treatment system.
Purifiers will either remove or kill viruses. Viruses are rarely a problem in the U.S., but if you are travelling abroad you will need something that eliminates viruses. Some filters, like the Grayl, can eliminate viruses. The other common systems to use are UV lights (Steripen), or tablets that contain Iodine (Potable Aqua) or Chlorine Dioxide (Aquatabs, Micropur). Since most purifiers are not filters, they can leave particulates and heavy metals in the water. If your water is really murky (eg. glacial), a Steripen will not work properly. You can try using a pre-filter to remove some particulates (nylons or handkerchief) but choosing water from clear fast running streams works best for avoiding problems with filters and UV systems.
When choosing a water treatment system, consider what you will be needing it for (trail running vs. multiday pack trip vs. international travel) along with cost, durability, and ease of use. Our staff has experience with many of these treatment systems, so if you need more input, please feel free to ask us for help.
Just like any important backcountry tool, you'll want to have a backup plan if your initial water treatment method fails. Water filters can clog, squeeze bags can break, and UV purifier batteries can die. So regardless of your treatment method, we recommend always bringing backup chemical treatment tablets.
