Arts_CultureArts and Culture Online Survey

brief  Arts and Culture online survey
By now most residents should have received a 6x11-inch postcard mailer describing the proposed New Arts and Culture Goals and Policies drafted by your City Arts Council. The City is seeking the community's input to improve the draft language. Please take our brief online questionnaire to let us know your thoughts and opinions.

Next steps will include review by the Planning Commission, with more opportunities for public comment, at the June 6 (6:00pm, City Hall) and August 29 (6:00pm, City Hall) meetings.
Flash_AwardNominations Open for Flash Family Inspirational Award
Click here for 2018 nomination form
Nominations are now being accepted for the Flash Family Inspirational Award (FFIA), which honors a Mercer Island senior adult (55 and older) who exemplifies the spirit of good sportsmanship or community leadership, and who possesses an optimistic attitude and friendly demeanor while acting as a role model to others. The City invites all residents to nominate a citizen whom they think deserves to be recognized for embodying the spirit of this award.

As Phil Flash once said, this award should be given to a community member who: "Keeps busy, exercises, eats healthy food, never, ever sweats the small stuff, and always stays positive." Phil Flash passed away in April 2015.

The winning recipient of the FFIA rides as a "Hometown Hero" in the Summer Celebration Parade on Saturday, July 14, receives a gift, and has their name added to the perpetual plaque inside the Mercer Island Community and Event Center.

Nomination forms are available online or in person at the Community Center or the City's Youth and Family Services office in Luther Burbank Park. You can also request a form to be mailed by calling (206) 275-7754. The deadline for submissions is Friday, June 22, 2018.
Water_MainsWater Mains Cleaning Underway
Flow gauge; click to watch a video explainer
The City's Water Crews have started their annual water main cleaning projects and will be flushing water from various fire hydrants in the East Seattle neighborhood and across the north end of the Island. The method being used to clear the mains -- Unidirectional Flushing (UDF)-- actually conserves water by flowing at a higher rate for a shorter period of time.  The higher flow rates create a scouring effect and clean the pipe walls.

From time to time, customers may notice water that appears more cloudy (turbid) if crews have been working in the area. In that case, customers are asked to run water from faucets and fixtures for a few minutes and it should clear up.

on Trails Day
National Trails Day (NTD) will be celebrated in Pioneer Park on Saturday, June 2 from 10:00am to Noon. A national initiative of the American Hiking Society, the Trails Day helps promote and protect foot trails and the hiking experience.

The City's Parks and Recreation Department will also be offering its "letterboxing" activity, in which children make a clue book and search throughout the summer for different letterbox locations. Completed books are submitted at summer's end for recognition at a celebration event.
