COMPOST  CORNER

Q.  Curiosity question:  Since soiled diapers, incontinence materials and sanitary pads, etc., probably make up a large part of garbage, is anything being done to figure out how to recycle these items?

A. Recycling doesn't really seem like a realistic option for these items. That's why I'd continue to stress reducing the amount of them going to landfill by using reusable, washable diapers.

There may potentially be composting options for compostable diapers, sanitary pads etc., but this would require them going to a biosolids composting facility or anaerobic digester (similar to what the wastewater treatment plant has) instead of to our composting operation.

The trick is that these items can't be flushed down the toilet, so getting them from your house to the facility would be the trick.

The Choices We Make

Napa Valley CanDo seeks to inspire and facilitate action  by alerting interested Valley residents about opportunities for service. If you participate as a volunteer in an activity that you learned about through Napa Valley CanDo, whether initiated by CanDo or another organization, please take personal responsibility for your involvement. Use common sense. Only you can determine whether an activity is a good fit, that is to say  compatible with your interests and abilities.

A  CARING  COMMUNITY

Why are these gardeners so excited?
Well, just look at that beautiful, spacious garden shed!
Thanks to a generous grant from Napa's very own

this new shed  was recently installed in our
Food Bank Garden.
We're so grateful (and, finally, organized!)

And there's more  thanks due.
A truckload of cow manure (thanks to Carol Boykin and Betty Labastida), and a huge pile of compost were no match for the terrific volunteers who came out on
Wed., March 28 to spend the morning in the garden.
MANY THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!

Come and join us in the garden any
Wendesday morning, 9AM until around 11AM.
Questions? Email Karen.
