SHINING OUR BOOTS and MORE!

Yep, Cowboy Cab is almost here and the excitement is palpable. Staff, board, and friends have all been busy rounding up some amazing auction items (see below) and encouraging ticket sales and sponsorships. Every penny raised from sponsorships helps to cover the event costs which means more funding for our Ready to Work activities. We cannot thank our early bird sponsors enough and of course, there is still time for you to join the sponsor list!

Beyond Cowboy Cab, there are several reasons for our added excitement: a record number of Ready to Work graduates, an energetic 8th grade girls' group, two new customers for our Lovin' Oven cookies, bi-weekly bike rides for the community, a generous gift from our local Rotary Club, and some new faces.

Feel free to share our good news with others and invite your friends to join you on June 9th to celebrate our teens at Cowboy Cab 2019.

With thanks,

A SNEAK PREVIEW OF COWBOY CAB 2019!!

As you enter the barn, a teen will greet you, help check you in, and send you on your way for an evening of fun!  Of course, there will be appetizers served by our Lovin' Oven teens, a variety of beverages to enjoy, music, a great dinner, but this year we have a few surprises in store...

You will want to get there early to sign up for some amazing buy-a-spot opportunities - first come, first served!  What a selection: cuddling baby goats, a plein air experience, ceramics lessons, bay land explorations, amazing dinners, and more!

You will also have the opportunity to bid on: a dozen date nights, a board extravaganza, amusement park hopping, a unique dinner at the London Ranch with Jack and Charmian, an intriguing "date" with a Congressman, and a drag race with the Chief of Police? We are not kidding! It just keeps getting better!

Sunday, June 9, 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at
The Barn at Tyge William Cellars, Cornerstone

Purchase tickets now: $125 for individual tickets or round up some friends and reserve a Table for Ten for $1,000 - a savings of 20%! Sponsorship packages are also available. We look forward to seeing you there!

Special thanks to our Early Bird Sponsors:   Les and Judy Vadasz, Chuck and Cathy Williamson, Pamella Olson and Donald Ryndak, County of Sonoma, WestAmerica Bank, Sandy and Dick Drew, Nugget Markets , Rabobank, Judy Scotchmoor and Roland Gangloff, and Sonoma Raceway.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR READY TO WORK GRADUATES

On Friday, April 12th, the smiles were plentiful and with good reason as Becky Jo Peterson, Teen Services Sonoma Executive Director, welcomed teens, family members, friends, staff and board members to celebrate the accomplishment of 32 amazing teens.

Over the past five weeks, these students from Sonoma Valley and Creekside High Schools diligently participated in a series of after-school workshops to learn the skills needed for securing their first jobs. They gained self-confidence; learned about the application and hiring process, money management, and customer service; completed their first resumes; and participated in interviews with local business professionals. Now, with the help of personal job coaches, they are ready to accept that first job.

Congratulations go to: Naomi Aho, Marisol Aparicio, Natalie Arguello, Laura Benitez, Alaery Carmona, Armando Cazares, Christian Cazares, Aurora Claris, Noe Contreras, Maria Garcia, Sophia Girguis, Dani Grippi, Brianna Guitierez, Juliana Guiterrez, Lily Hamilton, Diana Hernandez, Ramses Hernandez, Annabelle Hunter, Leo Inigues, Armella Irakoze, Breanna Knierim, Nathan Lopez, Edwin Martin,  Janette Martinez, Abel Morales, Kapono Myer, Karla Perez, Adal Ramirez, Jazmin Rodriguez, Tita Rodriguez, Victoria Santos, and Rocio Sosa.

Special thanks to Best Western Sonoma Valley Inn for generously donating the venue and set-up for this special event and to Joelle Smith and SHEnoma for donating just the right clothes to make sure the job interviews were a success. (see photos above).

A NEW SMILE AT TEEN SERVICES

As mentioned in an earlier newsletter, Francesca Fifis is stepping down as our Program Director in order to follow a personal career dream. Though she will certainly be missed, we are pleased to welcome Casey Richter who is taking over that role.

Casey is excited to work with teens again after a decade of classroom teaching in Bay Area public schools, progressive charters, and Montessori programs. Her non-traditional path to teaching began at The Evergreen State College with studies that ranged from ecology to Buddhism to quantum physics to organic farming and which included travel to ten different countries. After graduation, she became a natural foods chef, taught scuba diving and English in Thailand, earned a Masters in teaching at NYU, received two Montessori certifications, and spent five years leading high school and college students on service-focused experiential education programs spanning six continents. She is thrilled to be part of an organization that recognizes and supports the needs of teens to contribute, to belong, and to be valued for their efforts as participating members of our community.

Meanwhile, Francesca remains with us through Cowboy Cab to guide Casey in her new position while also serving as our Acting Lovin' Oven Manager.
GIRLS GROUP

Each week, the classroom at Teen Services comes alive with the chatter of ten 8th grade girls from Adele Harrison Middle School and Sonoma Charter School who compose our Girls Group sponsored by Soroptimists International of Sonoma Valley. Norma Martinez, our Teen Center Coordinator, magically follows recommended curricula on topics such as balancing stress and exploring careers while allowing the girls the freedom to select some of their own activities. These have included attending the North Bay Women of Color Conference at Sonoma State, a course on babysitting, and planning a tour of San Francisco State University.

The girls have forged new relationships and also find time to give back to the community. They had great fun stuffing plastic eggs and volunteering at the annual Easter egg hunt held in the plaza last month.
BUILDING COMMUNITY WITH BIKES

In between refurbishing and selling bikes, responding to customer requests, mentoring teens, and teaching a Bike Mechanics Class, Adrian Palenchar and Simon Cutler also manage to build community through bikes. Both recognize the sense of freedom and comraderie that a shared ride can offer and so have initiated a 10-mile Slow Roll bike ride to be held every other Saturday. This leisurely ride is open to all ages and begins at Operation Bicycle, 207 Nino Marco Square at 10:00 am. For the full schedule visit the website  (scroll to the calendar at the bottom of the page) or contact   Adrian.

Operation Bicycle has also provided bike rodeos at El Verano and Prestwood Schools offering free safety checks and minor tune-ups.
GOOD NEWS FOR LOVIN' OVEN

Teen Services recently received a much-appreciated grant award of $6,895 from Rotary Club of Sonoma Valley. These funds will be used toward the supplies and set up costs for our Lovin' Oven product line expansion.

Currently, the LO provides snacks (cookies, granola, etc.) at the Teen Center and for sale at Operation Bicycle, a full dinner meal each week for homeless clients of Sonoma Overnight Support (SOS), weekly boxes of cookies for customers of local businesses, holiday pies, and additional menu items including light appetizers, lunch, and desserts for local nonprofit and business events.

For now, the revised business plan is dubbed Lovin' Oven PLUS and includes new products and an expanded customer base. You will be hearing much more about this, but while the plans are simmering, our customer base is already expanding. Two additional businesses - Silveira Chevrolet and Umpqua Bank - are now receiving LO cookies on a weekly basis and bringing smiles to their staff and customers. Our teens enjoy keeping up with the demand, continue to cook for SOS, and recently provided service at the annual SOS Mother's Day luncheon and the Crab in the Cave dinner sponsored by the Glen Ellen/Kenwood Rotary Club.
