IDA Update
Congratulations IDA Member Dr. Holloway

Dr. Jeanette Sabir-Holloway received the Lucy Hobbs Project Mentor award for her Increasing Diversity in Dentistry Pipeline (IDID) program. The Lucy Hobbs Project honors and supports women in dentistry and is named after the first female dentist in the U.S.

Launched in 2009, IDID mentors underrepresented college students and supports disadvantaged students in their quest to become dentists. Dr. Sabir-Holloway practices in Indianapolis and is also the director of outreach, recruitment and admissions at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. Thanks to her efforts, Tufts University School of Dental Medicine is now one of the most diverse dental programs in the country.

Congratulations to Dr. Holloway for this well-deserved honor!

We need a total of 1,000 volunteers on Friday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon. We welcome volunteers for any shift, but please note that we have an urgent need for Saturday volunteers .

ADA Medicaid Resolutions: They Make the Provider and Patient Experiences Better

By Dr. Rhonda Switzer-Nadasdi, immediate-past volunteer on the ADA’s Council for Advocacy for Access and Prevention (CAAP)

I love it when I see our new ADA vision statement “empowering dental professionals to achieve optimal health for all” being embraced. One way the ADA accomplishes this is by encouraging dentists to participate in Medicaid. As an incentive, the ADA created a Medicaid Provider Reference Guide and Advocacy Toolkit, which serves to educate providers and encourages greater collaboration with state Medicaid agencies to continually improve their programs. Common sense Medicaid reform must improve enrollee access, quality of care, reduce administrative burdens on dentists, and be cost effective. If such reforms are successful, it will be a win/win for the patient, state Medicaid agency, taxpayer, managed care company, and dental benefits manager, as well as participating dentists. Often, this entails increasing provider reimbursement rates, but that is not always feasible based on political and fiscal climates within individual states. Incentivizing dentists to become Medicaid providers is not the only approach. Removing disincentives can be equally as valuable.

IDA Dentists and Dental Students Attend ADA Lobby Day in Washington

Over 1,100 dentists and dental students from across the country came to the nation’s capital to advocate for their patients, profession and their practice. Attendees met with federal representatives and discussed issues within dentistry with political analysts, subject matter experts and politically involved dentists.

Indiana was well represented in Washington by IDA members and students from the IU School of Dentistry. Thank you for serving as Indiana's voice for dentistry in Washington!
