San Francisco Giants
Latest San Francisco Giants' nominee for Babe Ruth honors goes to Giants' infielder Joe Panik (12) who muscled out two home runs on successive days to open the MLB season. Both runs stood up for wins, as the Giants won the first two games, 1-0, to open the new season against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Above, Panik sends a ball to the outfield on July 28, 2016 at AT&T Park as Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos (40) looks on. Standing on the top step of the Nationals' dugout is former Washington Nationals manager and new Giants special advisor, Dusty Baker.

Golden State Warriors -- Edwin M. Lee Court Dedication
Golden State Warriors center Zaza Pachulia chatted with San Francisco mayor Mark Farrell before the Edwin M. Lee Court Dedication at the Salvation Army Chinatown Corps Community Center on Friday, March 30.
Mayor Farrell commented, "Mayor Lee loved sports, he loved the Warriors and he loved the Chinatown community. I cannot think of a more fitting tribute than naming this court in his honor and supporting programs that will benefit this City's youth. I commend the Warriors, PG&E and The Salvation Army for coming together to respectfully honor the legacy of Mayor Lee." Images © Ed Jay Photography.
|
The gymnasium and indoor basketball court were refurbished in partnership with the Warriors, PG&E and the Good Tidings Foundation as part of the Makin' Hoops program, which has restored more than 70 basketball courts in the Bay Area. The renovation work included replacing the backboards and scoreboard, fresh paint on the walls and new "Edwin M. Lee Court" signage in honor of the 43rd Mayor of San Francisco, who passed away on December 12, 2017.

"
The Salvation Army meant so much to Mayor Lee, and he meant so much to the city and our organization," said Golden State Warriors president and COO Rick Welts. "Naming this court in his honor recognizes his legacy as a community steward and will serve as a lasting tribute to his enormous influence on us all."
Welts has just been elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame by the Contributor Committee and credited for leading the Warriors to three straight finals and two championships during his tenure. Visionary With Diamond Vision
By Andy Dolich
|
This year 135 million fans will be watching their favorite teams, sports, stars and most importantly themselves on video boards in the NBA, NFL, MLB and NHL venues from coast to coast. They won't have the slightest idea who made their in-game experience that much more enjoyable.
In the U.S. alone there are close to 30,000 video screens in stadiums, ballparks, arenas, and other sports/entertainment venues. The man who started all of this in 1980 was born in Hiroshima, Japan in 1938.He was in the city with his family on August 6, 1945 when the Enola Gay dropped her horrific atomic payload, killing over 100,000 residents. Mikio and his family miraculously survived.
In today's sports palaces some facilities have multiple screens installed; main video, ribbon boards, concourse signage, and public marquees next to interstates. Venues are installing them in concourses, clubs, bars, press rooms and in locker rooms. Every major college football team has a video screen. The last holdout was Notre Dame, which installed two screens this past summer.
In the past few years high schools have seen the value in digital advertising. They have done a great job of selling sponsorships to create new revenue streams for their schools.
Mikio Matsubayashi was the Johnny Appleseed of sports video boards in America. He recently passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. His memorial service will be on April 7 in Southern California.
Mikio was our friend, along with hundreds of executives throughout the sports world. Fred Claire, a longtime Dodgers executive and I thought that his story deserves to be told in depth to millions who have benefited from his vision, future focus, marketing savvy, business building and network of sports venues throughout America. The business of sports has grown from millions to multiple billions of dollars due in large part to his unique skills and positive personality.
Mikio worked for Tokyo Electro Acoustic Company (TEAC) and Mitsubishi-TRW in the '60s and '70s. Through TEAC he met former baseball commissioner General William Eckert, who introduced him to Los Angeles Dodgers owner, Walter O'Malley.
|
The understandably proud owner of the Los Angles Dodgers celebrates his team's remarkable achievement. Diamond Vision continues to shape the sports world today. |
In 1979 Mitsubishi Electric of Japan developed a large outdoor video system they wanted to market in the United States. They came to Mikio for advice, hoping to introduce it at Yankee Stadium. The 1980 All Star baseball game was to be held at Dodgers Stadium, so Mikio asked Mitsubishi to bring the system to Los Angeles instead.
In English, Mitsubishi translates to "three diamonds," so Mikio named the video system, Diamond Vision. It was installed in time for the game.
Mikio Matsubayashi and Diamond Vision created a revolution that led to a multi-billion dollar global sports business. The next time you smile at Kiss-Cam, say, 'thank you,' to Mikio.

San Jose Earthquakes -- Chris Dangerfield
|
The San Jose Earthquakes announced that Chris Dangerfield has been elected to the Earthquakes Hall of Fame. Dangerfield will officially be inducted at halftime of the Earthquakes match on Saturday, May 5 against the Portland Timbers, presented by Audi, and the first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive commemorative pennants. "When I had an opportunity to come to San Jose in 1981, I immediately knew it's where I wanted to make my life," Dangerfield said. "The Earthquakes organization has always treated me so well and truly made me part of their family. I couldn't be more excited to be in the Hall of Fame. There's so many people that I would like to and will thank and that includes the players and the fans that have always been so supportive of me." Dangerfield played for the Earthquakes in 1982, 1983 and 1985, returning to the club for one final season in 1988. During his time with the Quakes, he competed in the North American Soccer League, NASL Indoor, the Major Indoor Soccer League and the Western Soccer Alliance. Pacific Rugby Premiership (PRP), Round Seven
In a mid-year circus, the Pacific Rugby Premiership (PRP) held three games featuring all six teams on Sheeran Field at Treasure Island on a windy, dry Saturday. Belmont Shores maintained by dominating the Olympic Club, 44-10. Life West gave OMBAC all they could handle, losing a game that might have gone either way by a 39-33 win, to remain unbeaten. Santa Monica continued to improve every week, but fell to SFGG in a game filled with regrets by both sides as neither played the smartest rugby game of the year. Final score: SFGG 43, Santa Monica 17. Caption by Austin Brewin.

Las Lomas-Walnut Creek High School 44 v. Palo Alto High School 41
|
Even though Payne finished with 12 points, and Nathan Robinson led all scorers with 18, the key to the win was a sticky man-to-man defense that held Palo Alto to just one field goal in the first 11:57 of the second half, and limited the Vikings to 26.7 percent shooting.
