There's No Business Like Show Business!
On Wednesday, our students debuted their long-awaited performance of Roald Dahl’s
Willy Wonka Kids.
Students have been working on this show with Mrs. Cherepinsky in the after-school music club since the High Holidays, and it was such a treat to see all of their hard work come to life! Many thanks to everyone who attended the afternoon and evening performances; our students were delighted to have such a wonderful audience, and we hope you enjoyed the show as much as they performing it!
As a teacher, I have always loved school musicals, and the invaluable contribution they make in the lives in the students. Participating in a school play teaches kids so much; not only do they learn about the various elements that go into a successful performance, such as music, choreography, lighting, and direction, but they also learn so much about themselves and the incredible things they are capable of doing. Musical theater teaches kids innumerable lessons, including how to think creatively, work collaboratively, and communicate effectively. By playing a character, they also have the unique opportunity to step into the shoes of another person and see the world through the eyes of someone else, a practice that builds empathy and understanding for others. In these ways and so many more, it’s clear that the impact of musical theater in the development of children is truly priceless.
On that note, we must also recognize that this experience would not be possible without the hard work of our staff, parents, and community, all of whom contributed to the show’s success. We are incredibly grateful for our music teacher, Marina Cherepinsky, who ran our music club and directed the performance. Additionally, we are indebted to our many parent volunteers who did everything from designing costumes, coordinating props, doing hair and makeup, assisting in rehearsals, working backstage, and so much more. Our students are so lucky to have such dedicated families, and we could not do what we do without you!

Our Students are Learning in Many Ways!

Kindergarten General Studies

Kindergarten is getting ready for 1
st
grade, and our class is full of Math! In late April we started studying money. I played the part of a kindly storekeeper who kept changing her prices. Sometimes items in my store had a set price, but things could also go on sale or even have a price increase.
After pretending to buy plastic food, we moved on to real food and used real money and some silly rhymes. Students could purchase the following items if they had the correct coins:

1 Hershey Kiss: If you don’t have a penny, you can’t get any.
·
Want a pickle? Got a nickel?
·
A drink of lime costs a dime.
·
A cookie order costs a quarter.
Now all students can identify pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters and state their values as well, which is so impressive.
After reviewing telling time to the hour, we practiced and mastered time to the half hour on analog clocks. Now everyone is busy making books filled with Number Stories as we explore the Big Ideas involved in both addition and subtraction.

was so much fun...ask any 5th or 6th grader! Here is a sampling of activities from the 4-day adventure.
The campers sang everyday, and students learned many fun songs!

Making s’mores at the fire was a favorite activity...dampened only by the rain!

Students learned about useful plants. They picked wild lavender and peppermint to make lip balm; made pita and pesto from scratch; and ate bamboo shoots...they taste a bit like asparagus!

Students enjoyed socializing with the farm animals.

|
Lots of friendships were developed with students from the other two Jewish day schools.

We are so excited that three of our students are traveling to Mexico City to present their winning research project for the CADENA Initiative, a contest of ideas where middle school children propose an idea to prevent or respond to a natural disaster in vulnerable communities around the world.
Silver Academy students in grades 5-8 worked in groups to research, write and submit their ideas to CADENA earlier this year. Three of our students, Orit Leiferman, Isaac First and Elez Bell, have been chosen to represent The Silver Academy in Harrisburg, Pa. They will be leaving for Mexico
today
to meet with the other ten teams from all over the world!

A Silver Academy Alumni Giving Circle
The Alumni Giving Circle is proud to announce that they have decided to fund some important projects at The Silver Academy. Grants are awarded to Mrs. Gaughan to purchase a new microscope for the science program, to Mrs. Marina Cherepinsky to provide a limited number of scholarships for families who struggle with the costs associated with the school musical and to Jackie Rubin to provide PJ Library programming. Some funds are also being placed into a donor advised fund at the Jewish Community Foundation to be reserved for future projects.
