First Culturally Aware Mentor Training 
Held at University of Utah
On Feb. 27, the University of Utah held its first Culturally Aware Mentor training. Facilitated by NRMN Master Facilitators Philip Cheng, PhD, and Kelly Diggs-Andrews, PhD, participants engaged in a day long training where they were able to identify personal assumptions, biases, and privileges that may operate in their mentoring relationships.

Dr. Margie Alvarez is a Research Assistant focusing in Educational Technology at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey. 

"The experience with NRMN has transformed my research practice, specifically the relationship between my research assistants and myself. I've been able to communicate better, reach out to them in more ways, and discuss issues that are important to them."

Upcoming Conferences and Opportunities
June 6 and 7, 2019
MET Building at UNT Health Science Center
 
The Texas Center for Health Disparities, at UNT Health Science Center will host its 14th Annual Texas Conference on Health Disparities June 6-7, 2019 in the MET Building. Conference participants & presenters will include clinicians, health policy makers, researchers, health educators, public and community health leaders, and students whose work incorporates the use of multidisciplinary partnerships that build collaborations to eliminate health disparities and achieve health equity. The conference will feature nationally renowned speakers and will highlight evidence-based clinical, community and policy approaches to improving maternal and child health across the United States.
 
This year's focus is on Social Epigenomics & Health Disparities;
Evidence based approaches that identify mechanisms by which social experiences at various stages in life, both positive and negative, affect gene function and thereby influence health in racial/ethnic minority and health disparity populations.
 
We encourage all students and faculty to attend the sessions and meet the presenters.
Society for Leukocyte Biology 2019 Annual Meeting

The SLB Meeting provides award and presentation opportunities for participants at all career levels, with special opportunities including poster flask talks, session co-chairing opportunities, and a new elevator pitch contest. 

New program additions include several professional development workshops covering topics such as  "Building Your LinkedIn Profile,"   Building the Right Team Through Great Leadership," and  "Advocating For Your Goals: The Art of Saying No, So You Can Say Yes."
